Quirky but real. As a Canadian from the same era I can totally relate to what he describes. A really great book to give to Americans to explain who we Canadian really are.

So, what constitutes 'Canadian culture' and elements of Canada? From notorious plastics which take twice as long to decompose to a special kind of screw and driver used only in Canada, there's a host of oddities uniquely Canadian which Douglas Coupland here sets out to capture visually and in text description. A hilarious, pointed set of true observations, all backed with color photos.

Clearly Canadian (and better than the first!)

This SECOND collection of imagery and musings from Famous Canadian Writer Douglas Coupland didn't always strike a chord with me. I'm from a different part of the country, with different history and experiences, of course.

Yet enough was oddly, eerily familiar to convince me that there are few young writers better qualified to comment on the State of Our Nation than Coupland. Not as enjoyable as his fiction, but something fun to tide us fans over while we wait!

I enjoyed this quirky collection, particularly Coupland's Canadian House installation art, more than the first. The images seemed fresher and his intelligent commentary was just as enjoyable. Keep 'em coming!

This book is great for those having difficulty identifing sparrows or LBJ's (Little Brown Jobs). It has many actual pictures of each sparrows which shows the different variations from region to region, young to old, and from season to season.

In the winter time here in Virginia we get a number of differnt types of sparrows that migrate in. I love watching them but was having difficulty determining which types were which from just the regular field guides so I asked around and one of our local birders recommended this to me. Its terrific! The pictures of the birds are close-up - as if you were holding the bird or were sitting on the ground less than a foot away looking at the bird. This really helps when trying to distinguish the slight differences in colors or patterns. Each species has a chapter that strats out with measurements (size, weight etc) then there's a range map, and some text on habitat, then some text on behavior and voice/songs. There's writing about similar species, geographic variation, distribution (winter, breeding, migration periods), conservation status, and molt. There's also text descriptions for specific markings etc to hone in on, and discussion of hybrids if any. Then the chapter has pictures, of boys, girls, adults, juveniles, etc. Really a great book that has helped me a lot. I'd buy it again in a heart beat.

Excellent...!

This edition has a lot of text in it, so it's not really geared towards field use. Yet, the pictures provided are really good. However, for an in-depth study of sparrows, it's an excellent source. Definitely recommended.

Great book. Seemed to be written from an objective view point - and I really appreciate that. I came away from this book with a better understanding of Prime Minister Harper and a better hope for the future of Canada.

this book was originally assigned to me for a Canadian politics class, but I never got around to reading it until after I graduated. It's a solid book - it really portrays the leadership style of Stephen Harper in the context of an ever-contentious Canadian political history. Johnson does a superb job of displaying Harper as a leader unrivaled in his vision for Canada. For Americans like myself, it's a great book to gain a better grasp on major Canadian political issues such as regionalism, Constitutional politics, and of course, Quebec separatism, among others. Go for it!

No Hidden Agenda

This is a well-written book, full of anecdotes and about an interesting subject. Many people claim that Stephen Harper has a "hidden agenda" but when reading about his life, it is easy to see a consistency in vision and a steadfast dedication to making Canada a better place for all Canadians, not just the political elite. Mr. Harper is brilliant and that comes out loud and clear in this unauthorized biography. Mr. Harper also is clearly a man with integrity and honesty. That greatest asset is also his biggest handicap, because Canadians are so used to the "what's in it for me?" style of politics that they have trouble understanding the integrity of Mr. Harper. I hope his critics will take the time to read this excellent book.

hands down one of the greatest books ever written about canadian politics. rick mercer's incredible wit and vast political understanding really make it just so laugh-out-loud funny. i love his rants. i'm glad he's continued on with them for his new show 'monday report'. hopefully there will be another book on those as well! these are exciting times, and for rick it's like the playoff season that just won't quit.

read this book, it's good for you.

This book is a reprise of Mr. Mercer's "rants" on "This Hour Has 22 Minutes". For those of you who lack the good fortune to have access to the show, I highly recommend this book. For those of you who are fans of the show, this book should be added to your collection.

"Streeters" is a must-have for anyone with an appreciation of political humour, be it Canadian or otherwise. A mandatory item for anyone seeking to understand the Canadian psyche, this book gets the point across via a unique combination of keen political insight and an extraordinary command of common Canadian prose.

What can say, a truly awesome book. I went to summer camp and met my boyfriend there. So much of this story reminds me of our summer at camp. I would reccomend this book to all teens, it is one that you won't get bored with, there is lots to keep you hooked and everything about it is so true. Real issues that make you think.

Summer romances, we all have them and we all remember our first summer romance. This is a great book for teens, both endearing and insightful. Not only does this book tell the story of a wonderful first summer romance, but it also deals with serious issues that many kids of today face. Amazing book would highly reccomend.

Another fantastic book by Elizabeth, I would reccomend this to anyone with teens at home. This Author really knows what teens go through, she taps into their true emotions and shows both positive and negative ways of dealing with problems. This is a great book especially for young girls falling in love for the first time. Many of us remember our first kiss as well as our first summer romance and that last kiss of that summer. Thanks for another great book. It brought back some great memories.

This is a wonderful book for teens, written from the male point of view it brings new light to the typical teen novels. This endearing story of young love, really brings to light the problems young men have coping with their feelings as well a pressure from their peers in school. I applaud Elizabeth for taking the time to write a book from this angle. I wish more Authors did. I would reccomend this book to anyone with a teenage son or daughter.

This is the best guide to home gardening I have seen, combining ease of use with authoritative information. The brief notes are to the point, the photographs are excellent, information is easy to find, and the full entries are exceptionally well done. A pleasure to read, this work will surely become the standard reference on home gardening.

More than just a guide, a resource for every gardener.

Despite the books' massively long title, it's actually an easy-to-read, well organized reference guide to plant selection, propagation, care and maintenance, as well listing of hundreds of plants. Like many Taylor's guides, this one is profusely illustrated with lovely photographs of plants that will not only inform, but inspire you to get gardening. Almost 350 pages in length, there's not a lot of filler in here, rather, it's packed with lists, glossaries, appendices that will answer most questions any beginning and most intermediate gardeners might have in regards to perennials, annuals, shrubs, flowering trees and vines. If you want to landscape your garden and not sure of what plants to work with, you may want to start here!

My very favorite gardening book

I have many good gardening books but this is the one I refer to constantly and suggest to my friends. Arranged alphabetically, the mini-chapter on each plant contains all the information I need to make decisions on purchasing, choosing a site, planting, growing tips, and propagating. The final section in each chapter suggests companion plants that mix well and like the same conditions. To top it off, this is a beautiful book with excellent photographs of the entire plant in its natural surrounding. GET THIS BOOK.

I was lucky to take Mr. Hioki's courses in telecommunications using his textbook at CCSN, in Las Vegas, NV.. His book was a great source understanding the world of electronics applied in telecommunications. Many of the new emerging technologies such as wireless communications, internet, fiber optics, are covered in great detail. He also has a great chapter dedicated to modems. Mr. Hioki manages to bring light without appearing to blind its readers. He abstains of giving the mathematical formulas, although for those savy with numbers won't be dissapointed. His book is gear to junior college student or those with a background in electronics.

This book is surprisingly funny, full of twists and turns and is so realistic that you can basically close your eyes and see exactly what's happening. There are of course, many sexually disturbing images, but it's still one of my favourite newly discovered Canadian Authors!

The quintessential Toronto novel...

Elyse Friedman's novel Then Again is one of those all too rare creatures: an impeccably written literary novel that's funny as hell. It's also extremely moving in parts. Friedman's prose has style, punch, and inventiveness. This book is worth reading just for the story of the poodle ("nature's most perfect food," it was invented in 1872 by Otto Van Plotsberg, apparently). But the bigger issues are where this novel is at -- the characters range from the banal to the grotesque, and the dialogue is brilliant. Fans of the smart and the offbeat will dig this rectangle.

I loved the book, "This Old Farm". The memories it brought back to me are some that I had forgotten for many years. The writers of "This Old Farm" knew exactly what they were talking about. I could smell the odors, see the colors, feel the grass, hear the sputter of the tractors and machines. It brought tears to my eyes as it brought back memories of my life on a farm while I was growing up.
