EXCELLENT WORK ON ISRAEL/PALESTINE CONFLICT

Review Date: 2005-12-03
I have not read such an incredible book on Israel/Palestine conflict in last couple of years. The deep thoughts that animates its beautiful prose is really absorbing. If you compare this book with that of other works available on similar topics (i.e., Lewis or Page etc.), you will see what it means to be an honest and genuine scholar. The book takes us to the heart of the subject matter in a compassionate, elegant, illuminating voice we haven't encountered in recent years.

Knowledgeably compiled and deftly edited Manfred Waserman and Samuel S. Kottek, Health And Disease In The Holy Land: Studies In The History And Sociology Of Medicine From Ancient Times To The Present is a seminal and scholarly work of impressive dimension. Following an informed and informative introduction, Health And Disease In The Holy Land is comprised of seventeen scholarly contributions that ranger from Paleopathology in the Middle East (Baruch Arensburg & Marcus S. Goldstein); Health and Healing in Medieval Muslim Palestine (Felix Klein-Franke); and Pilgrims, Crusades and Plagues (Stephen R. Ell); to Hospitals and European Colonial Policies in the 19th and Early 20th Centuries (Norbert Schwake); Kupat Holim and Jewish Health Services during the Mandate (Shifra Shvarts); and Judea-Samaria and Gaza: Twenty-Five Years of Changing Health 1967-1992 (Theodore H. Tulchinsky), Health And Disease In The Holy Land represents ground breaking scientific inquiries and descriptive/analytical regional public health and specialized medicine histories. Enhanced with an extended bibliography for further studies and readings, as well as a comprehensive index, Health And Disease In The Holy Land is a unique and strongly commended addition to academic library reference collections and medical history reading lists.

A "must" read book! Definitely an inspiration!

The author shares David's life with the reader very candidly. Through the author's writing I could identify with David. David's life is CLEARLY layed out. I now see that greatness is available to me through trusting in GOD. I related David's experiences with my life. I can see how David's mishaps in life where part of his healing. Trusting and believing in GOD to deliver him through the not so great moments in his life. Every chapter inspired hope. The author shows that despite all of David's setbacks, GOD is working things out in him. I highly recommend this book to anyone that is experiencing inner battles and seeking inner and outer victories.

A gentle yet extremely challenging book

This is an excellent book for anyone wanting to escape from mediocrity. Following the life of King David (including Saul and Jonathan), Rebecca covers emotions such as rebellion, fear, hatred, envy and despair and examines the remedies of submission, faith, love, compassion and hope. I would never have described myself a jealous person or someone with a lot of hatred but this book really challenged me about how I do live my life and the way I respond to people.

Great collection of bullae

This is another great book of many documenting personal seals and bullae from biblical period. This one in particular documents 211 bullae (clay imprints of personal seals that are purportedly from the burnt layer of Jerusalem from the time leading up to the first destruction of the city by Babylonians. They come from various collections, purchased on the antiquities market by various buyers as they began to emerge in the mid 1970s. The origin of all bullae isn't always known and verifiable, but Professor Avigad does his usual thorough job of documenting all details and available information about the collection of bullae in this volume. Black and white photographs are accompanied by scaled drawings, detailing and clarifying the writings and inscriptions on each bulla.

The highlight of the volume is probably the bullae of Berekhyahu son of Neriyahu the scribe, which is assumed to be Baruch son of Neriah, the scribe for the prophet Jeremiah as noted in the Book of Jeremiah chapter 36. Once again, whether this or any other bulla is authentic or not, is difficult to verify. Even if the bulla is authentic it is difficult if not impossible to ascertain that it indeed belonged to the biblical Baruch we think it did. Nonetheless it is still very exciting discovery. There are other bullae that carry the names of biblical characters, but their origin and the association with an actual person from the Bible is equally uncertain and unverifiable.

The bullae are categorized and presented in a structured manner. First, bullae with official titles are presented, next bullae with the name and ancestry of the owner. Next are fragmentary bullae with incomplete names, bullae with ornamental motifs and at last illegible bullae. At the back of the book are the usual, very helpful indexes of name, titles, etc., which are always helpful for onomastic research. Great resource.

This is a handy resource! I spend 45 minutes just flipping through the book when I first got it. So far I've used the concise information found here to write a newsletter article, find an illustration for a lesson, check a fact without going through my files, and have used one list as the outline for a presentation.

The Trauma of Converso Women

This is an outstanding text. I have extensive experience working on Sephardic culture and the forced conversion of the Jews. In addition the author has been able to focus on one of the leading areas of Inquisitional studies that has gone unresearched for far too long and that is the treatment and experience of Jewish women forced to convert to Catholicism. This is a scholarly book that is a "must" have for anyone who is interested in medieval Spain, western history and nation-building because Spain was the first modern nation-state to come into existence in the West at the expense of minorities - the forced conversion and expulsion of Jews and Moriscos. The women of minority status were of the great risk and often the most abused. Levine Melammed has done a wonderful job in presenting this painful and traumatic experience. I recommend this text without any reservations.

These are selections from the long record of Jewish heroism, selections of those whose names and stories are well- known from King David down to the rescuers of Entebbe. This is a very small selection of the many many Jews who often in a quiet and unknown way showed great courage in defending their own people. What is somewhat sad is that the ranks of these heroes , and often these martyrs , are growing all the time because of the constant effort of enemies to destroy the Jewish people. The stories of the great great majority of those who have fought with courage, defended their people and often paid the greatest price for it, are largely untold.

As Patrick Devenny explains, it has long been clear that Hezbollah has plenty of rockets. In May 2005, observers on both sides put that number at 10,000 or more, the majority being 107 mm and 122 mm Katyusha rockets from Iran. That was bad enough, but there was a more serious concern to the author, namely Hezbollah's Fajr-3 and Fajr-5 rockets, and Syrian 220mm rockets. These carry 200 pounds or more of high explosives, and they have a range of about 45 miles.

The author warns us that Hezbollah might indeed use those rockets to attack. After all, Hezbollah might be condemned by the United Nations for using rockets, but were Israel to retaliate, say by having its military enter southern Lebanon, "the international community would likely dilute its condemnation of Hezbollah."

As we see, Devenny was right. And perhaps we ought to ask ourselves what would happen if Hezbollah had nuclear weapons.

Still, many in the international community seem eager to side with Hezbollah by denying Israel a right to defend itself. And that makes me wonder what it is they want.

Some of those who oppose Israel say they want truth. But they come up with untruths about Israel so often that I think this may not be the case. Some say they want justice. Once again, they favor injustice so often that I suspect the opposite may be true. Some say they want peace. But if that is the case, why do they support a gratuitous war against Israel? If they want human happiness, why do they support a war that will cause so much misery? If they want prosperity, why do they support a war that may preclude it?

If indeed there is something so important to them that it is worth sacrificing truth, justice, peace, happiness, and prosperity to get it, I wish they'd explain what it is.

I recommend this article.

These case summaries are a great time saver. I highly recommend using w/ text for a concise break-down of the facts and consequences of the cases in the text. I have used for 2 classes so far and have improved my exam performance- my 2 highest grades were from classes for which I used High Court Case SUmmaries, no lie.
