Thoughtful & Imaginative Read for EveryoneReview Date: 2004-04-28
This book touches upon so many emotions...the love of family and friends, the pain of loss, the anxiety of impending peril, and one remarkable unifying element...the simple and basic compassion for a tired old stray dog. Ms. Kaplan has shown us that humanity is both precious and everlasting, despite all of our religious and political differences.
Deep in symbolism, rich in characters, and a story that has you enchanted from page one. The perfect 'family' book.

History, first handReview Date: 2007-02-13
The book is a graphical reproduction of Charles Henry Churchill's account, published in a 1,000 copy run in London in 1862. Despite the 283 page length, the type is large, so it's possible to read this volume in one sitting. It would be considerably shorter in a smaller, modern font.
At the outset the volume gives an interesting background on the Druze faith, though some details from Medieval sources seem rather implausible.
But for its account of the 19th century, the book offers first hand, extremely graphic descriptions of a turgid conflict between the Druze and Maronites, instigated by Turkish rulers, who were eager to regain control of their empire after groveling for European support, and reluctantly implementing reforms at European behest.
Apart from the routine humiliations imposed on Christians and Druze alike by Turkish rulers, the book also gives a remarkably frank description of the political manipulations that initiated the strife, and the complete disinterest with which the Turks watched the resulting conflict rage.
This little book is by no means all encompassing. But it does offer an excellent, eyewitness window onto the events in Lebanon from 1840 to 1860.

Excellent study of often ignored battle during 1973 war.Review Date: 2002-11-23
This excellent book is about the conflict here during the 1973 war, where the Syrian Army massed on the Golan Heights, attempted to strike in a lighting offensive drive towards the Mediterranean Sea, thereby cutting Israel in two during the most Holy period in the Jewish calendar, with the Israeli military at it's most vulnerable.
This outstanding study details the make-up of the Syrian forces which consisted of a vast amount of new Soviet equipment/weaponry & comprising of some 1,200 main battle tanks, 1,000 armoured personnel carriers & some 1,000 artillery pieces, not to mention the vast numbers of infantry.
The book presents a number of interviews taken over a five year period from participants of both sides during the fighting and covers one of the greatest tank battles fought anywhere since World War 2, even detailing many ýintimate' accounts of ýtank against tank' battles during the combat.
We are provided with remarkable accounts of incredible courage and an analysis of how an inferior number of Israeli troops inflicted one of the greatest defeats in military history upon considerably greater Arab armoured forces. Notably, every single Israeli tank engaged in combat, being numerically inferior, was hit by hostile fire.
An exploration is provided into how the end of this conflict resulted in the Syrian Army being virtually destroyed in the field (including largely ignored or forgotten Iraqi & Jordanian contingents) and with Israeli artillery within range of striking Damascus, the Syrian capital.
A highly recommended, excellent account of yet another pivotal battle in this turbulent region.

Action versus EconomizingReview Date: 2007-11-01
The Economic Point of View is important not only as a history of economic thought, but as an explanation of where our thinking about economics went wrong. Lionel Robbins shaped modern economics with his idea that economics is about choosing between means of attaining given ends. The simplicity of Robbins' conception of economics makes it persuasive. The idea that we must choose between ends due to scarcity seems so obvious that it is hard to imagine fault with this idea. Mises taught Kirzner well enough to see the weaknesses with the Robbinsian conception of economics.
The dominance of Robbins type economics has led economic theory to a number of dead ends. Economists came to think only in terms of optimization problems, while ignoring real market processes driven by human action. Given that economics drifted into further greater error after the publication of The Economic Point of View, one could judge this book a failure. Such a judgment would, however, be unfair. Kirzner explains the importance of the idea of action, as opposed to economizing, in a relatively clear and concise manner (as compared to Mises). Kirzner succeeded both in explaining the importance of the action principle and the shortcomings of the economizing principle. The failure of many to appreciate (or even notice) important ideas is not the fault of the messenger. The ideas in this book are important. Anyone interested in understanding the fundamentals of economic science should read this book, along with Carl Menger's 'Principles of Economics' and Buchanan's 'Cost and Choice' and 'What should Economists do?'.
