Against the usual evaluation of S.a.p. as a pragmatic party ,professor Tilton shows in his excellent study the role of ideology in shaping policy. The book will be of interest for everyone concerned with historic and contemporary problems of social democracy in europe.

A Tribute To Ambassador Per Anger
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2000-05-25
Rarely do you have an opportunity to meet someone who has "made a difference in history." Ambassador Per Anger is just that sort of person. Elizabeth R. Skoglund touches on the thread that held people like Per Anger, Rauol Wallenberg and others together while they tried to help those escaping the Holocaust. For us now, we too can "make a difference".

Important background to understanding Hammarskj

Review Date: 2006-04-21
Mr. Erling's book offers an alternative English translation to Dag Hammarskj?ld's "V?gm?rken". It is more literal than W.H. Auden's translation (with the title "Markings"). It is unique since it includes comments and explanations, some of which require extensive familiarity with the literary, educational and family background of Hammarskj?ld. Waymarks also contains allusions to contemporary events, the significance of some of which has been lost in the mists of time. These comments and explanations are not even available in Swedish - a Swedish translation is sorely needed.

DELIGHTFUL INSPIRATIONAL READING

I can't wait until the authors finish the next volume. St. Birgitta is a wonderful saint for parents of troubled young adults to study. She had eight kids: one was also a saint but several of the others had big problems. She had religious visions throughout her life which are well documented. The authors did a wonderful job of making the book readable and not just academic.

A very powerful book

In 1940, Nazi Germany invaded Denmark and Norway in a blitzkrieg attack, and set up occupation governments. In neighboring Sweden, where accommodation of Germany become the order of the day, one of the country's leading authors, Vilhelm Moberg, abandoned his pacifism and tried to prepare his fellow countrymen to resist foreign oppression. In 1941, Moberg published his historical novel Rid i natt! - Ride This Night!

This is the story of the village of Brandebol, which loses its freedom in 1649 to a new German nobleman who is determined to grind the farmers under his rule. Among his fellows, Ragnar Svedje is the only farmer willing to take up arms and defend his freedom. Taking to the forest, Svedje becomes a symbol of the fight for freedom, which embarrasses his countrymen who cravenly knuckle under. But, the cry for freedom is sweeping the country, and everyone will soon have to decide which course to take.

Overall, I found this to be a very powerful book. Vilhelm Moberg (1898-1973) became one of Sweden's leading men of letters, and this book is rightly considered one of his greatest works. In 1942, in spite of Swedish censorship of anything that might embarrass Germany, a movie version of Ride This Night! premiered and swept the country. This is a great book, a classic of Swedish literature that is just as powerful in any language.

I found this to be a great book, one that is bound to appeal to any lover of great literature. (For those so inclined, I must say that this book makes an excellent argument for an armed citizenry that can then resist governmental oppression.)

Delightful and entertaining

The illustrations and content of this book are totally captivating. As only Astrid Lindgren can do, she tells a tale with humor and touches your heart as well. My daughter and I discovered this book in our public library and checked it out often, only to be dismayed when it was "lost". We tried in vain to find a copy, until striking it rich on this website a couple years ago. I felt I had found a treasure, and was so happy to have my "new" out-of-print book in my hands. We still enjoy it every bit as much. As with any well-written story, it appeals to all ages. This book may have you chuckling and crying in one sitting. Don't miss it. By the author of the much-loved Pippi Longstocking books.

Exciting Conclusion To The Holme Trilogy
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2001-09-26
This is the final book in the Holme trilogy, a saga about a Viking thrall and his family. The book starts out with the aftermath of the destruction of the Christian church by Holme. He leads other thralls in an uprising for freedom, which ends in disaster. Once again, Holme is in trouble and must flee again. Holme goes to see the sympathetic king, and becomes his personal blacksmith. Holme's wife Ausi and daughter Tora move onto the king's settlement as well.

The family who originally owned Holme and Ausi is down to its last two surviving members - the old chieftains wife and their son. The old woman still wants vengence, meaning she wants to own Tora and Ausi once more. She's too afraid to want to own Holme again...he's far too dangerous. However, the son Svien has other ideas. He loves Tora and wants her to be his bride of her own free will. Svien works things out with Holme and things go well with Svien and Tora.

The clash between Christians and the worshippers of the old wooden gods comes to a head, and the battle between thralls and freemen continues. This is a very untraditional tale for the genre, written throughout with virtually no dialogue. Fridegard is a first-class storyteller, and infuses beautiful descriptions of wildlife and settings like a true master. The trilogy is a truly brilliant work of artistic literature.

Great, easy-to-follow recipes
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2001-12-27
This great cookbook has a wealth of Scandinavian recipes (113, if I counted correctly), organized into seven chapters: soups, appetizers and snacks, fish and shellfish, meat poultry and game, vegetable dishes and salads, desserts, and cakes cookies and breads. Each recipe has the flag of its country of origin, so you can even pick-and-choose among the nation of your choice, if you so wish.

The text is reasonably large, and the book is large enough to lay open without anything holding it open, which I liked. Wonderful pictures are scattered throughout, thought I could have wished for more. (That's a small complaint, though.)

So far, I have made the Potato Dumplings Stuffed with Bacon (p.56) and the Sour Cream Waffles (p. 96), and both were delicious! I am planning on making several other things, but I have no basis to comment on them, yet. Overall, I found this to be a very nice cookbook, one well worth having!

Hooray. At last a script marketing guide that helps playwrights too. K has done a masterful service to all who write for performance. The how, who, where of selling your hard work. Clearly presented in a logical sequence of chapters, each with action checklists. A must for every screen/stage writer's bookshelf.
