The debut novel of Cindy L. Dague, The Ancient Treils is a fantastic saga in which the natural balance of life teeters dangerously. Winafir is thrust into the crossroads of destiny, guided by the Elements in a quest to return The Light Energy to Treil Forest before all is lost. His search will take him across kingdoms and even below the deathly Shadow Mountain. A sweeping, majestic saga about the effort to fight back against madness and decay, for the sake of survival, honor, and love. Highly recommended.

I was given a copy of this book cause I own a bell from this ship.
This book is very good the best part about it is the diary of Sarah Jane which tells of her trip to and from Russia. It gives you a feel of the times of when boats were the way to travel. Plus, Sarah Jane developed a good enjoyable to read writing style. I recommend this book for young and old. Though I would say that younger kids would mostly enjoy reading the diary and not all the other historical stuff that accompanies it. :-) I'm amazed I own a piece of this fascinating history!

the russian mindset explored

americans, so often victim of their mirror-imaging when trying to figure out other peoples and their decision making, seem to have a problem to adequately reckon the 'otherness of others'. the russian mindset has been - mostly because of the cold war emerging after yalta and potsdam, but even prior to it, and thereafter still - been more baffling then clear to americans of all social and political strata. what could be made up by living in russia for a few years, or perhaps reading the collected works of solshenyzin and co. can be, with a certain focus on the topic at hand, made up by reading this book the scientific rigidity of which is belied by the flowing and even gripping reading it makes for. i have not many a book so compelling in dealing with a topic that may well be considered to be a bit dry otherwise.

A little jewel

"Armed With Patience" is the best treatment out there of what's happened to life in Russia since the breakup of the Soviet Union. Winchell tells us about the Russia few Western journalists and tourists ever see, from shopping and health to children and spirituality -- and much more. Her observations are based on two nine-month stays in the 1990s, and are enriched by her language fluency and solid grounding in Russian history and culture. Winchell is a keen observer and gifted writer. Details, anecdotes, and proverbs take us from the general to the memorable. "Armed With Patience" is a little jewel.

This is the first book in what will be a huge series of orders of battle for the Soviet Red Army from the mid 20-30's to the fall of the Soviet Union. Heavy emphasis on the World War II activities with a month by month assignment of the units.

Material is taken from previously unavailable Russian archives and is material no t seen before in the west.

If you are a serious student of the Soviet Army this will be a must have series of books on par with Shelby Stanton's WW II and Vietnam OB's for the US Army.

Glorious Russian Costume

I first stumbled across this book many years ago in a library and almost fell over in happiness when I saw the contents. You are given a great witten introduction to Russian costume styles at the beginning followed by the most amazing collection of photos of Russian high society dress I've ever seen.

This book is full of large full colour plates of Russian dress from the 18th century onwards till the 1918 revolution. You are given samples of mostly high society costume. You see things such as dresses worn by Catherine the Great, Ball dresses of the 19th century, and something I have never seen elsewhere - a raft of great colour photos of Russian court dresses, including details of their embroidery. The majority of the photos are of women's dress, but there are also some outstanding men's costumes of the 18th and 19th centuries. The costume samples are filled out with paintings of the same period.

If you have any interest in Russian Costume or have a weakness for Russian Court Dress, then this is a book you MUST get your hands on if possible.

Stalin's USSR the Way It Was
Helpful Votes: 16 out of 16 total.
Review Date: 2002-09-29
Eugene Lyons was a clever and amusing fellow. Assigned to be a reporter in Moscow during Stalin's rule he broke the mold: he, unlike Walter Duranty of the Times, would tell the truth. Initially attracted to the Great Experiment, Lyons soon learned the misery and death suffered by the eggs broken in Lenin's omelet: the NEP men slaughtered when the New Economic Policy fell from favor, the kulaks liquidated as a class, the Ukraine nearly exterminated. Though tragic, Lyons recounts the times with wit and pathos, and with a grasp of English not unlike a cross between Conrad and Nabakov.
