This book gives a rarely portrayed glimpse into the influence of Zen Buddhism within and on the early 20th century war machine of Japanese imperialism. With many stories of religion gone wrong, this is an important work.

This well researched and controversial book makes a deep impression. It raises crucially important questions about the relationship between religion and state as well as casting new light upon twentieth century Japanese history. That even Buddhism, in theory the most peaceful of creeds, could have been so extensively corrupted by a military agenda, gives one many
insights into human nature, not least, by comparison, into the contemporary phenomenon of guerrilla fundamentalists and their crusading patriotic opponents. The book contains a wealth of fascinating original source material, a feature that not only brings home the reality of war and its moral dilemmas, but also, most importantly, enables the reader to draw his or her own conclusions. An excellent book.

This is a quality compilation of 100 royalty free Japanese stencil designs that were originally published in German in 1895. The images are very clear and crisp and include stencils of carp, cranes, flowers, trees, leaves, dragons, bamboo, butterflies, lobsters and some abstract designs. The book will definitely be useful for those interested in the fiber arts stenciling, and it will have other applications as well.

I bought this little book on impulse in the National Museum in Tokyo. It's a great, very informative read. It does what it says on the tin. Questions (some serious, many light-hearted) range from Why are there so many holidays in Japan and Why does it cost so much to have a posthumous Buddhist name to Why do you have to wear special slippers to use the bathroom?

The fact that it's bilingual is great if you're discussing it with a Japanese friend or (I guess) if you are learning Japanese.

Are there any other similar books for other countries (eg China?)

This is another in the marvelous series of high-quality books on the textiles from the Kamei Collection. Published by Bijutsu Shuppan-sha, and only sold through high-end booksellers, the books provide the serious designer with essential reference to historical textile designs and patterns.

Chock full of rich color photographs of textile patterns from the Kamai Collection, this is the third volume published: Dyeing and Wallpaper (3).

The Kamei Collection dates back to the Meiji period (1868-1912) when it was started by Count Koreaki Kamei, heir to the old Tsuwano Clan of Japan. Th count, who was studying art history and aesthetics in Germany, originally gathered the pieces to serve as reference materials. This comprehensive collection of 19 century European dyeing, weaving, wallpaper, and design patterns for textiles that have all but disappeared today.

Selected pieces from this collection have now been compiled into two volumes : volume I deals with dyeing, weaving, and wallpaper, and volume II with design and patterns. Reproduced in vivid color, these books are sure to become indispensable references for anyone interested in design.

Is this paperback really $495.00 or is this a typo? The other ones like this say the same price too? Could be right tho. I guess you all look over these before displaying them

I thought that Philip M. Parker had reached his peak with his outlook on Electric Tea Kettles, but he has reached a new summit with "The 2007-2012 Outlook for Year-Round Unitary Single Package and Remote-Condenser Air Conditioners with at Least 640,000 BTU Per Hour Excluding Heat Pumps in Japan", even though I wish that he would've included the Japanese heat pumps.

There is so much to be said for the joys of unitary single packages, but that is better left for you to read and to experience on your own.

I look forward to reading more by Parker!

From "capsule hotels" to "tissue paper giveaways" to "coffee shop concepts," Leonard Koren takes the reader on a fascinating, informative tour of Japan. The writing is direct and lively, and the illustrations are superb. If you're looking for a quirky, delightful insight into the Japanese culture, I highly recommend this book.
