As a frequent traveller to Bhutan, mesmerized from the first step into the country by the beauty of the landscape and its people, and fascinated by the rural life-style there, this unique photographic portrayal of the country by region and cultural group is a special treasure in my collection. For anyone with even a passing curiosity about this land that is undergoing a phenomenal cultural revolution, this book is a necessity. For the would-be travelers, it will awaken your senses before you arrive, and for the vicarious adventurers who will see Bhutan only from the comfort of their armchair, there has never been a more beautiful way to peek into the remote corners of Bhutan that are rarely viewed by even the local people and never by foreigners. Kadinchey la, John Berthold!

I have just completed the reading of this excellent work, in one sitting, during which I created a bit of biogas of my own. I have been engaged in research work in natural gas generation for some time and find Lichtman's opus most informative and enthralling. I had no idea of the potential for biogas, even here in Los Angeles where the potential of biogas has barely scratched the surface. I believe even the general reader, including children, will get hours of pleasure from this top-class source of information about creating light from nothing other than that which we would otherwise flush into our once pristine seas which are now full of polluted entities which have no place there and which have destroyed the minds and hopes of this and all future generations, who, as we all know, will be much better off if the recommendations of this book were actually implemented by the politicians and other power-holders who only tend to protect themselves instead of the much larger global population who lives in misery because those holding power refuse to subsidise biogas systems for humanity.

Everybody has an opinion and in today's world they get shared more often and remain viable for longer thanks to the internet and other media. This fable is an important reminder to take perspective and experience into account and then to make decisions based on those that have the best perspective and I daresay the best opinion.

The Blind Men and The Elephant is a wonderfully written book. It tells the tail of six blind men who travel to their prince's palace in order to meet his new elephant. The students may ask, how can blind men meet an elephant? In this well written story, each blind man touches only part of the elephant. They go on to describe what the elephant feels like. For example: one blind men says "the elephant feels like a wall", another blind man describes the elephant as "the elephant feels like a snake". This is a great book for teaching the sense of touch to students grades K-3.

I am trying to find more information on the Andrew Ward responsible for writing this beautiful book. Based on the memoirs of a British families' servant, this colorful story brings to you the tale of an Orphaned boy growing up (on the run) in India. You will learn about his childhood, a crazed Christian Reverand (I am Christian, so no hate mail please) who runs a halfway-house/slave camp....and more about his (Balbeer's) life on the run. The back of the book also contains a nice glossary for people like me who have no clue what a "mahout", "bidi", or a "rao" are. If you have to go to work the next day, don't bother starting this book!
A very enjoyable book. Easy to read

I found this book in a book fair in Washington DC. I never suspected that this book was going to be one of the best fiction books I have read. Balbeer Rao, through his memoirs, takes us to a grand journey across India meeting all kind of peoples (Holy men, exotic concubines, royal families, the feared Thuggee) and living all kind of adventures. In this book Andrew Ward presents a very vivid image of India on the time of its independence. He describes the land as he describe the people in all their splendor and traditions. Read it!

This is really the definitive book for novice birdwatchers in India, and remains very useful even as you grow more experienced. Its small size makes it much more portable and thus useful for field trips. The illustrations in the new edition are simply lovely and improve tremendously over those in the earlier editions. A must buy.

This is a book that is deeply moving if you are someone who can handle very intensive reads. This is not a light book by any means! I can truly say this is my favourite book of all time: it made me want to go to India, in the mountains, and find myself. Anyways, it's a great book, if you're looking for something mind-expanding.

A profound message for children and adults

I can't speak highly enough of this book. Although endearing to children, its message is profound for all ages: If something is important to you, act, no matter what the odds of success. You never know what the outcome might be, or who might be inspired by your action. I remember "The Brave Little Parrot" when I think I can't be bothered to put a sign in my yard, write a senator, or speak out on a highly controversial issue. It's a beautiful story, and is beautifully illustrated.

A miracle of rare device...

The author, S.K. Hookham, is a well-trained scholar and a lama qualified to teach these matters. The reader can be confident that this text is an authentic, authoritative introduction into one philosophical system of Tibetan Buddhism, a view shared largely (there are exceptions) by the Shangpa and the Jonang. This is not easy reading but if one has made some committment to the Buddhist path and studies earnestly, those efforts will be rewarded.
I recommend it highly to practicing Buddhists, and those aspiring to Buddhist practice. (If you're not sure if Buddhism is for you, there are other books that can help you, such as Chagdud Tulku's "Gates to Buddhist Practice.")
This view is the legacy of many generations of wise beings. May it find the readership it deserves!

This book is an informative and useful explanation of the Shentong (AKA Yogachara-Madhyamika) view of Reality in the context of a commentary on the Ratnagotravibhaga. Any serious student of Tantric Buddhism will find this very useful in reconciling sutric views and tenet systems with those of Mahamudra and Dzogchen.

Pommaret is a person who has years of experience in dealing with the Himalayan region for over 20 years, and has written a few other books on Bhutan as well. The book has loads of large colorful pictures, interesting facts, and also draws from explorers from the past 230 years such as , White, Bogle, Turner, Griffith and Eden. Specific sites of interest from each open province are listed, and there is even details on every major trek offered by tour companies. There are books by people who travel to various countries, and then there are ones written by people who KNOW a particular country. Out of the 4 or 5 travel books I have read about Bhutan this is the "King James Version".
