Dr. Brock-Utne has taught at Stanford for nearly two decades and in Scandinavia and South Africa before that. In a wonderfully readable fashion he brings his narrative skill and clinical acumen to bear on 47 episodes of potentially lethal changes in the operating room during pediatric cases. Each case is carefully described and the problem, its impact and the ultimate solution and its cause are described in fascinating detail.
This is a wonderfully interesting read.. Don't miss it.

To many the apartheid regime equiped with nuclear weapons, a fierce police force, and all the financial and political suppoort Washington, London, Israel, and the other imperial powers could provide seemed invincible in its war against the peoples of Southern AFrica and its own Black majority. Nelson Mandela, in prison for decades, led the revolution that under the blows of independence struggles throughout southern Africa spurred by the Cuban and Angolan armies' routing of the South Africans, freed South Africa.
These are not just speeches about injustice or racism. These are speeches about mobilizing for the struggle, drawing the masses into that struggle, and delinating the program of a unified non-racial South Africa that made this revolution. Read them.

The First Great Trek took place due to a lack of economic opportunities and independence for the Cape Dutch, or Afrikaaners. These hardy folk trekked deep into the wastes of South Africa, seeking out a place they could carve out an independent existence. However war with neighbooring Native tribes, such as the Zulu and English colonization drove them to from two states, Natal and the Orange Free State. The rest of the history of S. Africa well known: Boer War, Nationalist election, Aparthied, De Klerk...
THis important work follows the 'New' Great Trek as white South Africans, both Afrikaans and English move to other countries where they find opporunity and are freed from the racism and economic decline, lawlessness and Aids of S. Africa. THey are finding themselves in Argentina, Canada, England and Australia. THis is an important work, it follows what happans when the former rulers of a country find themselves minorities in their own land. The Parrellel with Rhodesia/Zimbabwe is not far off, however the exodus from S. Africa is much more massive involving millions of people, many made poor by the journey, giving up a land they have inhabited for more then 400 years.
It is the stroy of tragedy and migration in the 21st century.

Phyllis Hands and Dave Hughes' NEW WORLD OF WINE FROM THE CAPE OF GOOD HOPE: THE DEFINITIVE GUIDE TO THE SOUTH AFRICAN WINE INDUSTRY adds to some of the few volumes on the market covering South African winery production, providing a more comprehensive and technical discussion than most. It's not a light survey of wineries, but an overview of viticulture and oenology in the country blending color photos with discussions of the physiology and distribution of South Africa's various varieties. South Africa's wine industry has been over three hundred years in the making but is only lately receiving its deserved world attention, and this comprehensive study, which includes interviews with local and international wine experts, is a solid starting place for understanding the country's wines and regions.

This book has good coverage of the New World areas. The photos are very good quality, varied and informative. I just wish they had used a Screwpull for a photo instead of those silly wing-type corkscrews. Some personel are covered, from various wineries, which is interesting (similar to the "Wine Spectator" or "Wines & Spirits" coverage). Most of the content focuses on grapes and land, with some coverage of equipment usage.

Levin and Weiner cover all the issues in this book, from food to soils to land use to participatory land reform. A critical and uncompromising look at the land reform process in South Africa. Up to date, precise, well written - without question it will become one of the key documents on the land reform process. Participatory research at its best. Bravo!

The publisher, Rizzoli, sows an appropriately generous amount of quality into this book; even the paper is noticeably superior.
My only question is, when will this magnificent work be made available again? I've had it on order at several stores for well over a year now!
