The only way to pass a Microsoft Exam
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2008-04-05
In 1996 I took my first Microsoft Certification Exam, Windows 95. I was shocked, this was the exam from hell. I was among the 70% of first time takers that flunked. The company I worked for would not reimburse the cost of a failed test, so my faiure also took $100.00 out of my pocket. A friend suggested the Sybex study guide to the exam. I not only learned more than I had taking the Microsoft course, I also learned the rationale behind the way a Microsoft test is constructed. I passed the W95 exam on the retake. Since then I have used Sybex study guides for all Microsoft Certifications. In fact, I have passed exams without ever having taken the course just by using these study guides, including this one. If you are an IT professional, and need to build a portfolio of Microsoft certifications, this is the best money you will ever spend.

Get ready to become an MCP!
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2000-04-26
According to the certification standards setup by Microsoft, pass any exam except Networking Essentials and you are a MCP. With New Riders Windows 98 Exam Gear you may have the best chance of all to get the MCP and start on the path to higher learning.

Like other exam gear packages this one is a manual install and as with the other this should be changed to auto install. After the installation it is very easy to configure and run and no major hardware changes needed. Also this package will run under Windows 2000 if necessary.

Again as with other exam gear packages you have the three modes of operation, first the study mode making the learning process fun and interactive. Secondly come the practice exam mode, with several hundred question to choose from you have a great opportunity to pass.

Lastly the adaptive mode, this mode is not for the novice, as it measure you exam ability and may stop at anytime. Unlike the actual exams this is not a true indication of you testing power. The price is a little steep, although I don't think will detract from the overall value of the product.

An excellent Windows debugging resource for the real world!
Helpful Votes: 6 out of 6 total.
Review Date: 2008-07-07
As an Escalation Engineer for a large software company, live debugging and post-mortem memory dump analysis is a part of my daily routine. I often find myself debugging some strange/unique problems, where I am sometimes stuck staring at stacktraces wondering where do I go next... In these times I would often find myself searching the web, trying to find more information, which would mostly leadme to http://www.dumpanalysis.org... On this site, I usually find that Dmitry not only encountered a similar situation before, but has fully documented and classified in-depth debugging information regarding the issue.

It is no surprise that the contents of his book (Memory Dump Analysis Anthology, Volume 1) contained a vast collection of Windows debugging knowledge, fully illustrated, with great explanations of complex topics broken down nicely so that even a beginner can hit the ground running with Windows debugging. This book is a great resource for both beginners wanting to explore the realm of Windows debugging, as well as for professionals who perform debugging (both live and post-mortem) that need a reference for various memory patterns.

In the past it has always been difficult to find a solid source for Windows debugging information, as bits and pieces of this knowledge has been scattered across various sources. It is nice to be able to pick up one resource such as this book, and follow it through to the end and actually build a strong Windows debugging foundation. Complete with code examples, illustrations and screenshots, this is a must have for anyone who is serious about debugging on Windows.

Cheers!

A profound thinker who also knows about bits and bytes.

"Despite 50 years of progress, the software industry remains years - perhaps decades - short of the mature engineering discipline needed to meet the demands of an information-age society."

This sentence quoted from the September 1994 issue of Scientific American starts us on a marvelous journey to figure out why, indeed, this should be the case. Mr. Beckett comes from the old school of programming, the school of open standards and shared code, that school which orignally created the internet, and which is resurfacing in the Open Source movement.

Not only does Mr. Beckett thoroughly dispel the many modern-day myths about how programming should be done, he also examines the broader implications for our society.

This is a work which has the "ring of truth". Read it. You won't be disappointed.

Since the inception of the internet there has been no way to measure the impact on the global business community. Business after business has popped up all over the world and now you have the opportunity to shop online and conduct business without ever leaving you house.

Capturing this idea and making it work for you and your business is what Microsoft Press has done with this book, part of the Microsoft Mastering series. In just under 450 pages you'll find information on how to configure Site Server 3.0 and use technologies like ASP, XML and COM+.

The book is more than the typical information center, it also includes exercises and review questions that will help you understand the concepts as well as train you in the areas of e-commerce and e-business. You'll find that after reading this book you are more than ready to start the business you've always dreamed of.

Included with the book is an extremely helpful cd-rom, which included Internet Explorer 5 in case you don't have a browser. Along with that are course lab files, web site connections, lab overviews and breakdowns as well as the labs themselves. For under $50.00 Microsoft is making the transition in the new millennium a whole lot easier.

extensive AD reference, great guides
Helpful Votes: 16 out of 16 total.
Review Date: 2000-03-31
The reference information in this library is very useful and complete, but I was pleasantly surprised to see how much hands-on development information is provided as well. Since Microsoft's Active Directory is relatively new, I needed the combination of guides + reference to get up to speed with AD programming/scripting. This library provided both. The schema book, with its chapters on extending the schema and complete class/attribute listing, rounded out this reference as a must-have for people programming or scripting Active Directory. The AD glossary is a plus, too.
