For the Professional Developer

This is an intermediate level book. It is intended for the application developer who already has some knowledge of SQL (which implies some knowledge of what databases do) and of programming (particularly Java). For instance, the first chapter of this book is on the internal structure of Oracle. That's a long ways from the standard beginning of this is what a database does.

A thing this book is not for is the database administrator. There's very little on things like set-up, assigning users, security (there's a little on this); those kinds of administrative details. This book is, as I said at first, for developers.

The book does go heavily into programming techniques like triggers, regular expressions, object types, XML, defining your own functions -- things like that.

The authors all have extensive experience with Oracle, most of them work for or have worked for Oracle. As this series of books proclaims, this is a book written at the programmer to programmer level.

Excellent book for the serious developer!

I have read all the books on Oracle and most seem pretty fluffy - lots of pages but the content is on a pretty basic level. This is the first book I have seen that really delves into the guts of Oracle - how it works, and how to program applications effectively for it. Just what I have been looking for!!!

Quality Software Management: Congruent Action (Quality Software Management)

An incredibly useful book

This book focuses focuses on an issue of huge importance to software managers: how to respond appropriately to people (clients, bosses, team members) in difficult, emotionally charged situations. Weinberg uses simple but effective models to explain human behavior, and examples from the software engineering industry to put these models in contexts familiar to software developers. I first read this book several years ago, and as a professional facilitator had immediate opportunities to evaluate my own ability to behave congruently under stress. I quickly found that Weinberg's models helped me to understand and deal with conflicts more and more effectively. Today I use the insights gained from this book every day in my work with software development teams, clients, employees, and my own family. As Weinberg has pointed out, one of the main questions in software engineering (and perhaps in life) is Why do people so often do things wrong when they know how to do them right? As this book shows, to do the right thing often requires that in a moment a conflict or confrontation you behave congruently with all points of view, with the needs and fears and personalities of all parties to the issue. The insights, examples, and tools Weinberg provides here can help you become vastly more effective in working with others. I strongly recommend this book, and the rest of the Quality Software Management set, to people who lead software projects.

This book give good insights about the use of dynamic modelling applicated to the software development process. Great to understand the real meaning of non linearity of human based processes and great to highlight how some easy macro indicator can give info about your sw development process. The book's contribution to the sw development process is of the same type of Senge's Fifth Discipline for general management

This book has been revised and updated in a second edition. I suggest that you either buy this book used or the second edition new depending upon your needs and finances.

This book bridges the gap between school theory and practice in RF power amplifier design and construction. This is the best book on the subject that I have seen in 40 years.

A comprehensive guide for Highpower HF Amplifier Design

This is one fine book that deals with all the thoretical, practical and thermal aspects of Highpower Broadband amplifiers using Solidstate devices. Eventhough the examples and discussions are centered mainly around the Motorola RF Transistors, the principles can be extended to semiconductor devices manufactured by any manufacturer. The authors have dealt with the subject matter in a thorough and a very easy to understand manner.I have been reading H.O.Granberg's articles in QST,RF Design and Motorola Application Notes since the early 80s as they were always packed with his tremendous experience in the field of Solidstate RF design. No matter whether you are a professional designer or an advanced radio amateur, you are sure to find it a gem in your collection of technical books.

Reasoning about Rational Agents (Intelligent Robotics and Autonomous Agents)

Both Enjoyable and Thorough

You simply cannot choose a better overview of intelligent agent modeling. Wooldridge brings the reader from an extremely non-threatening, non-technical treatment of the basics to formal modeling of individual agent properties and multi-agent interaction using (essentially) constructions of formal logic.
This book is clearly intended to communicate a particular theory in a very effective manner. However, it does not (nor does it pretend to) provide a path to implementing any of the theory, so dilettantes beware.

A rarity - a user-friendly book of formalism
Helpful Votes: 9 out of 12 total.
Review Date: 2000-09-06
An excellent treatment of the formal modelling of what Mike calls Rational Agents and others have (more provocatively) usually termed Intelligent Agents. What sets this apart from other books on the subject are Mike's refreshingly direct, no-nonsense writing, and his recognition that his audience may not have all of the formal tools at their fingertips. The Appendix "Formal Foundations" would be a good choice for anyone who wanted to understand modal logics, especially as they apply to time and intention. Even software engineers who would rather hack code than grapple with formalism will find this accesible, stimulating and useful.

Excellent *practical* treatment of database design
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 1999-09-27
Just the right amount of theory. Clear concise definition/explanation of the important topics. Nicely explains where database design fits in with the overall systems analysis process. Footnotes and bibliography are excellent as well pointing you to the sources for full explanation of topics not directly related to the focus of this book. The book gives brief explanations of related topics where necessary but doesn't rehash a lot of material covered elsewhere. The only negative I can find is the information on hardware/storage. It's a little dated, but that's not surprising considering this book was published in 1992. This book is a worthwhile addition to your library.

An excellent start that I still turn to for help

When I wanted to get a start in Relational Database theory, I looked through a lot of books. This is the only one that got right to the meat and stuck with it. It's great: no fluff, no hopelessly advanced stuff to get lost in... just the stuff you need and want.

Clear, thorough, both theoretically sound and practical

This is in my opinion the most helpful modern book on analysis and design you can read -- and I've been studying and practicing these fields for over twenty years. It offers an incredibly good synthesis, combining the most useful ideas and notational elements of other object-oriented work with the best earlier approaches to analysis and design. The book is very strong on the essentials of software development method. The authors also point to subtle distinctions or variations in methods and techniques and explain why they prefer one variant over another (usually for, in my view, very good reasons of simplicity of notation, or ease of transition from analysis to design). Finally, the book is very clearly written. Ed Seidewitz and Mike Stark's experience stems from Goddard Space Flight Center, considered by many to be one of the best software development organizations in the world. However, methods and techniques illustrated here are shown to work in any domain, not only for space or real-time problems but also for management tools and administrative information systems (which is my field). This book never leaves my desk.

Outstanding, practical guide to object oriented design

As an introduction to and guide for the practical application of object oriented system design, this book is outstanding. The writing is clear, the subject matter is thoroughly covered and the examples are practical and robust. Essential for anyone interested in effectively applying the principles of object oriented design. Useful for both the novice and the already indoctrinated.

I have worked with C# for some time now. I really wanted to learn about .NET Remoting and I did not have much idea about building distributed systems. This book gives you a step by step approach and it does require you to have some basic knowledge in any OOP language. Knowing some C# would be beneficial.

Thanks to the author for publishing this book! Excellent!

One of the best books I have read on RE

This book provides a conceptual framework for understanding requirements that can be applied in any methodology. I do IV&V. For many of the requirements/SRS I see, the analysts don't have a good grasp on requirement levels: how far to decompose, what level of detail to include. After reading this book, where you are in the levels will always be clear to you, or if you got lost, you will be able to find your way back to where you should be.

A very well written introduction to Requirements Engineering

Review Date: 1996-08-26
Wieringa understands to explain very well on over 400 pages the methods and models of Requirements Engineering. If you have to work on this subject, as student, researcher or practitioner, this book will be your handbook. In part one Wieringa defines a methodological framework, in part two methods for requirements detrmination were analyzed using the framework from part one. In part III the results of this analysis were used to build an integrated framework for requirements engineering.

I was the tech editor of this book, so I've read every word. The authors dig deeply into ADO 2.5 and get into under-used but fascinating areas of the technology such as ADOX, Shapes, Streams and COM+. As I said in the cover quote, these guys really do understand the technology - they aren't just regurgitating the Microsoft documentation. Also, check out the huge amount of very valuable code in the book. Most of it is in Visual Basic for Applications which can be adapted easily for Active Server Pages or regular VB. Although the book is not designed as a reference book, I often use it to look up ADO syntax that I've forgotten. This is a great book to learn ADO 2.5 and to apply it in real world scenarios.

This is a "ONE STOP BOOK" for everything portal for beginners, Intermediate and advanced users of SAP Portal and also for managers with a lot of inputs from a implementation perspective.
Each of the chapters are sequenced with a well thought out flow keeping in mind the actual project life cycle. Each of these chapters are laid out very well with certain unique features that are not to be seen with any comparable book on SAP portal and they include OSS Notes, tips and tricks.
I strongly recommend this book for all levels of users and as the title suggests I strongly feel "THIS IS A COMPLETE REFERENCE".
