"On Your Own" is a well written, very informative book. The authors are able to cover specific financial, legal and emotional issues without being too wordy or losing the average reader in technical jargon. The content is applicable to widows of all ages and financial situations.

I keep multiple copies in my office as gifts for any recently widowed individuals I meet.

As a financial planner specializing in Wealth Preservation Planning, one aspect of my practice is providing life insurance, when appropriate. As a result, part of my job involves the delivery of death claim checks to widows. Unfortunately, many of them have never had the opportunity to deal with family finances or budgeting - but are suddenly thrown into a situation where they must assume that responsibility. It comes at a time of great instability and disruption.

"On Your Own" by Alexandra Armstrong and Mary R. Donahue deals sensitively with both the emotional and financial issues of widowhood, and provides guidance for both - with compassion and authoritative wisdom. It provides comfort and knowledge in a clever structure which allows the reader to review applications of each chapter's information in one of several optional formats, based upon her individual set of circumstances (young with children, elderly, etc.)

I am so impressed with the book that I give it to each of the beneficiaries to whom I deliver a death claim check. The thank you notes I have received have provided a wonderful reward for sharing this valuable information.

I purchased this book five years ago from Ms. Armstrong at a NAIC Congress in Florida. At the time I purchased it as a reference for my investment club's library. With 21 women in the M & D Investment Club I figured someone would need it sometime. I have skimmed it occasionally through the years but when I recently become widowed it was the first book I brought out. Ms. Armstrong has literally saved me much time and grief in trying to figure out what to do next. There is no time of greater confusion and despair than at the sudden and unexpected loss of a beloved spouse. When I can read this book gives me something to do or think about. The suggestions for organization are excellent and will allow me to make informed descisions instead of emotional decisions. While I did not expect to be the recipient of her wisdom I am grateful for it. I highly recommend it for all women, married, single, divorced or involved in any relationship that has financial involvement. We can't afford to not know how to best proceed with our financial future.

For all who have ever asked "What do I do now?" or "Who can help me with...?" I recommend "On Your Own". Like earlier editions, this is a sensitive and insightful resource for those who have recently experienced (or are preparing to experience) the loss of a spouse. In a highly readable and usable style the authors lead the reader through important topics often thought to be too intimidating or too confusing for someone wrought with fear and sadness.

Even though this book was written with widows in mind I found it a thorougly useful and informative work about investing. I am in my late twenties and have a young child. I found that this book was written in a way that made it accessible to me, as I am new to investing and all things financial! The book really made me understand how I should be planning out my financial future. My understanding was helped by the fact that this book was written by two women; I was able to relate to it on a financial and emotional level.

This is the story of Lt. Donovan, and a Mobile Advisory Team ( MAT 32 ),
and is exceptionally well told. There is no better book about being an adviser in Viet Nam. The culture and isolation of these small (5 Americas) teams is so well told, the gulf between the advisers and the American units their outlook on the war and the Vietnamese, the good, bad, and funny.
This is how it was, I was there for 2 1/2 years. Six months with an American unit and two years with MAT's, MAT 46, 6, and 64. This is the story of the 400 plus MAT's that operated until the final pull out of American Advisers.

This is one of the finest books I've read about the tragedy that was Vietnam. You can see why the Americans lost the war. Donovan pointed out the problems, mistakes, the unbelievable waste and corruption; and the plain ignorance that sent too many men home in flag draped boxes. He came to love the ordinary people of Vietnam, and saw them as individuals, not just a bunch of gooks, slopes or other derogatory terms that were in general use. You also come to realise that America could have won if they'd had more Donovans, and employed tactics that won hearts and minds, rather than use body counts as their measure of success.

If you want an insight into the Vietnam war, I'd recommend this book.

'Once a Warrior King' is an
excellent book. Written by Terry Turner using the pen name David Donovan.
I served on MACV Advisory Team 88 in Ben Tre, Kein Hoa Province, IV Corps, Sept. '68 - Aug. '69.
(That was where 'We had to destroy the town in order to save it.'
A dumb statement which was not true. Some buildings were damaged but were quickly repaired.)
I was fortunate to be at Province headquarers where we were able to live in a decent manner. By comparision, the MAT and District team where Terry Turner served, near the Cambodian border, had very little personal and US military support. It is obvious to me, as a former MACV officer, that the book 'Once A Warrior King' could have only been written by somemone who was actually there. The fact that T. Turner used a pen name is OK. Many of the names in the book were changed for reasons of privacy.
A good book.

Splendid book. Entertaining and minimally technical, it is strongly recommended for non-veterans who want to get a feel for "how it really was."

Donovan, as a mere First Lieutenant, was the senior U.S. military officer in a rural district near the Cambodian border. The Vietnamese District Chief cared little and higher authority was far away. By default, therefore, he became a kind of proconsul, a king. In charge of four Amercans and two platoons of Vietnamese militia, he ran his "own" war.

At first full of idealism and self-importance, he resembled Alden Pyle of the "The Quiet American". He mused that he could have any villager killed on his orders, and that he was treated like a lord. But he believed in the cause, loved the Vietnamese people, hated the Vietcong, disdained the corrupt and incompetent South Vietnamese government, and was appalled at the occasional coarseness of his fellow Americans. Like Horatio Hornblower, he was incredibly brave, but filled with internal fear and doubt.

All of the grand complexities of That War are conveyed in microcosm through anecdote. There is much humor (the pubic-hair contest he was asked to judge while holed up in a bar; the Keystone Cops escape in a Jeep with the Vietcong blazing away), pathos (the burned child he could not save), frustration (the Province Chief on the take; the District Chief who cared more for his own comfort than his people's safety; the air-conditioned REMFs who inhabited a separate world in Saigon), anger (the Vietcong-planted bomb that shredded a schoolhouse full of children), and harrowing action (assaulting a Vietcong bunker complex in a motor-driven sampan).

I served in the PBRs--river gunboats--that he often mentions, in a nearby area and at roughly the same time. This is the book that I would have written, if I had Donovan's diligence, sensitivity, and craft.

My mother is in her eighties and her dictum has become (for gifts),
if I can't wear it, eat it or spend it, don't give it to me. I
broke the rule when I gave her this book for Christmas, and she
loved it so much it brought tears to her eyes.

Bob Artley came from a town not more than 50 miles from my home
town and his age is not that far from the mother's age, and since
my mother also grew up on a farm, going through the book was like
going back into her own very real time. Unlike Mr. Artley and
probably nearly all girls who live on farms today, my mother did
not do chores connected with the farm. That was a guy-thing.
Girls worked in the house. Period. But she certainly had
brothers a-plenty who did those very same things in very similar
ways as did Mr. Artley. The illustrations are wonderful,
so realistic you can almost smell the hay, and other things
not quite so fragrant connected with farms.

I would recommend this book to anyone who has ever lived on a farm, lived near a farm, driven by a farm. It is a document of
a way of life that is swiftly leaving the scene, more's the
pity. It should also be in school libraries.
Even very young children can get a real sense of what it was like
to live on a farm through the marvelous illustrations

A book with heart

This is a beautiful book written by a writer and illustrator who grew up on an Iowa farm in the 1930's as the "age of the horse" was giving way to the "age of the tractor." The author, Bob Artley, illustrates with detailed sketches and color drawings of such things as walking through the spring mud from barn to barn carrying a bucket of feed, a birds eye view of the farmstead, one of father and son cleaning oat seed with a hand powered fanning mill, planting corn behind a team of horses, milking a cow the old fashioned way, the details of a cream separator, threshers at harvest time and much more. Mr. Artley writes a description of the work they did, what was hard, what was fun and a few of his personal memories of the feelings that he as a child had living this life. It is a touching book written with love and realism describing a lifestyle that has passed by. I especially loved his description of the barn chores where each cow had her chosen place where they were fed silage topped with ground oats and linseed oil, and where they would bed down in the straw with their heads in the stanchions feeding on clover hay. Mr. Artley is not overly sentimental in his memories. He also explains the distastefulness of cleaning out the gutters, working in the cold and the heat etc. He gives us a balanced look at farm life prior to telephones, electricity and indoor plumbing. This is a wonderful book for both those who also experienced farm life in the 1930's as well as younger people like myself who are simply interested in the lives of an older generation.

For somebody like me who doesn't read often I have to say that this book got me and kept me until I was finished. I read her other book Fishing For Irene and liked it also. I think Driscoll is a great writer and that is coming from someone who would rather play the piano than do anything. I hope Driscoll writes more books so I can continue to read from time to time.

This book will go into my keep forever shelf. Did not want to put it down but when I had to sleep I dreamt about the people in this story and during work the following day I thought about them constantly. Driscoll makes one care and love and want to have to dinner the most dreadful people. She is a master and that is the truth. Would love to see her first book FISHING FOR IRENE made into a movie and ONE LEG UP written for the stage. Driscoll's work should not be kept from anyone, anyhow, or anywhere.

Driscoll gets to the reader right off the bat and keeps you at every turn. The ladies behind bars in this book just kept me hoping and laughing and crying. Driscoll's writing reminds me of Twain's early good stuff when he wrote about Tom and Huck. She is that genuine and talented. I want a sequel to this novel as I can't get Bernadette and Theresa out of my mind. Driscoll is downright genuine. I think I love her. Fishing for Irene was excetional and One Leg Up is exceptional. They should be movies so people will regain their trust in the flicks. Time things get good again instead of violent and disgusting. Write us more and more Ms. Driscoll. We are awaiting. Thanks for being so good at what you do. Burke Chase Washington D.C.

Great for mapping from existing strategy to implementation
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2009-06-14
There is a beautiful simplicity about this book. I think's a great way to bridge from the high level strategy to implementation, and to capture the essence of what's important along the way. A great way to communicate to all involved what the org is up to.

The book walks you through each step with examples where orgs used different styles for the given steps. The question templates, for instance for objectives, are great at framing the points so your org can succeed at them.

The beginning of the book has a great set of "diagnostic" sheets to help you think about how things are going at all levels of your org, and for you personally.

One thing to be aware of is that this book assumes that you already understand your market positioning. What I mean by this is that you have picked out a place to play in the market, structurally, that will lead to success. Yes there are some questions that may help you further consider if you're org is positioned properly, but this book won't get you there.

Thus I'd combine this book with a strategy book which may help you to figure out a place for your org to fit in, that will set it up for success. "Strategic Planning for Nonprofit Organizations" is a good one.

Great for beginners!

I am so pleasantly surprised by this book.

I consult to small and medium size nonprofits on how to either get started or how to get off a plateau or 'stuck' place. This book will now be foundational in how I address these groups.

Terrific, step by step, no nonsense direction.

There is no touchy-feely here, though. If you want hand holding and advice and coddling, this isn't it. This will help you lay down the a, b, c, and d of your plans to move forward. Fill in the blanks, type it up, and go get your work done.

I've used all three of Jim's One Page Business Plan Books, and this one is the best! Concise, informative, creative, and inspirational, The One Page Business Plan for Non-Profit Organizations is easy for both the consultant and client to use.

Non-Profit Organizations are businesses, too. Most people who write "how to" books for profit businesses aren't also writing books for the non-profit sector. Jim and his One Page Business Plan series is different. Jim and his books comfortably straddle both the profit and non-profit arenas, and are written from an informed perspective.

If you are non-profit organization and it's time to write a business plan, this is the book for you. Within as little as 3 weeks, you will have your business plan done, your board excited and energized, and everyone on the same page.

This is the only business plan I use with my clients -- non-profit and profit alike.

First, I'm so glad in your introduction that you directly address non-profits current need to put business savvy and structure under their social goal orientation. I think this is not a pervasive perspective yet and it really needs to be to improve non-profit success in these days of leaner funding sources.

Strategies, Action Plans, Objectives - looks like you did a good job of translating the business OPBP version over, especially in these 3 more challenging areas.

The assessments starting on page 25, including a personal assessment (yes!!!), are wonderful and provide critical information for adjusting strategies and operational action planning. I think this is a really strong element of the book. People in organizations often don't know how to approach assessing themselves honestly.

Really liked your "Components of a Successful Non-Profit" page - brings it all together.

This is one of the best organized and most clearly written technical books that I have ever read. The authors clearly put a lot of effort into making a quality book. This is refreshing to find with so many IT books that are obviously written in a rush to "scoop" other authors.

Be sure that you know what you are buying. This book spends the first few chapters laying the groundwork and describing the application generation process in general. Then they get into the details of generating Oracle applications using designer with the goal being 100% generation. If CASE methods for application generation using Oracle Designer is not what you are looking for then keep looking, that is exactly and and only what you will find in this book.

If P.G. Wodehouse had been writing novels for young readers during the last quarter of the 20th century, he might have come up with something like "Ordinary Jack," the first in Helen Cresswell's series The Bagthorpe Saga. Jack, a hopelessly conventional and normal boy stuck in the middle of the madcap, eccentric Bagthorpe family, known for their prodigious achievements, wonders how he can ever get himself noticed. Uncle Parker, not so brilliant himself, sympathizes and comes up with a plan: Jack will become a prophet and go in for such mystical pursuits as visions, water divining, crystal-ball gazing and Tarot-card reading. Of course, all sorts of complications and much hilarity ensue. This very funny book and its six sequels can be found in British paperback editions and ordered from Amazon.co.uk.

It's been a long time since I read a children's book that really knocked my socks off. I had heard in various children's book circles about the mysterious Bagthorpe saga. A series of stories in which a single ordinary boy must learn to live with his genius/insane family. What I had heard, however, was not exactly conclusive. For all I knew, these books could be good or they could be overrated justly forgotten tripe of the lowest order. Out of the merest curiosity (and because I could locate a copy in my library) I found an original 1977 edition of the book, complete with illustrator Trina Schart Hyman's fabulous cover in which every single Bagthorpe member is rendered in the flesh. What I discovered will now eat up hours and hours of my spare time as I systematically track down each and every Bagthorpe edition in the series available to me. This is an amazing children's experience that must be read to be believed.

Jack is just your average kid. In any other family, this would be a good thing. In Jack's family, it's just short of catastrophe. For you see, in the clan of the Bagthorpes, everyone's a genius. Jack's brother William has a ham radio, plays darts, enjoys the bongos, and often goes about searching for new exciting talents to add to his bag of tricks (or, as they say, strings to their bows). Rosie, Jack's younger sister, is an accomplished portrait painter and recently beat Jack at swimming. Living in such a conceited family might push anyone over the edge, but fortunately Jack has one person he can count on. His Uncle Parker married into the family and, though extraordinary in his own ways, he's just as normal as his nephew. Together, the two plan to make Jack into the kind of guy his siblings see as an equal. They're going to make him into a prophet. This may mean they'll have to employ dowsing rods, crystal balls, purple suits, bear costumes, and tarot cards, but in the end it'll all be worth it.

So many in-jokes, clever puns, and smart plot twists pop up in this book that you'll wonder how long these characters were wandering around author Helen Cresswell's head before she committed them to paper. Adults reading this book will recognize characters they've met in real life while children will read about them and find themselves wishing they belonged to families just this crazy. There's more than a little "Cheaper By the Dozen" in this book, except that each character you meet in "Ordinary Jack" comes with their own very particular personality. I can even pinpoint the moment I feel head over heels in love with the book. After a particularly disastrous birthday celebration that ends in the dining room catching on fire, Uncle Parker laments that, for him, the real loss of the evening was that he won't be able to get the little mottos out of the crackers now. Americans, unfamiliar with crackers, may need a bit of explanation about this Britishism. Those who know what they are, however, will be delighted by Uncle Parker's assertion that he collects them so that at parties he can "stop conversation dead" with one.

Will kids like the book? They won't be able to help but do so. Jack is completely sympathetic, dealing with his crazy relations by becoming even crazier than they are. I loved his self-esteem talks to his dog Zero and how the women in the family suddenly start to get involved in Yoga for no particular reason. Reading this book, you'll forget it was originally published in 1977, so contemporary are some of the terms and fads. You can only assume that had no-carb diets been around in the late 70s, the Bagthorpes would've been involved in those as well.

There are hundreds of children's books that center on crazy families. Heck, Polly Horvath's practically made her living off of the genre. But the best of all these, by far, is Helen Cresswell's really breathtaking Bagthorpe books. "Ordinary Jack" is one of the best children's books I've ever had the pleasure of reading. A brilliant book for any kid with a sense of humor and a yen for the bizarre.

Excellent for adults, or precocious children

This book is usually billed as a children's book. I'm pretty
sure that's the reason it's out of print. It's an *excellent*
book, one of the best I have ever read. The characters come
vividly alive, driving the storyline. The plot is deeply
involved, yet easy enough to follow. The prose is crisp and
colorful and draws the reader into the story.

The only problem is, the vocabulary is a little more advanced
than a lot of children these days can comfortably handle. If
the book were marketed for adults, it would be a bigger hit.

This is not to say that children cannot read this book. They
can, if they're avid readers with a good grasp on vocabulary.
I could have read it by sixth grade or so -- about the same
time I was ready to read Dickens and Shakespeare. I didn't
happen to run into it until somewhat later, however, and I can
confirm that it's a great book for adults.

This book will exceed your expectations and capture your
imagination. You'll read it in notime flat, because you won't
put it down for mundane things like meals.

The second book, Absolute Zero, is just as good. The others
in the series are also not bad, though the first two are easily
the best. This is the one to get first.

VIVA Bagthorpes!

How COULD they have stop printing these books? I have loved the Bagthorpes since I first got Ordinary Jack as a kid and wanted to get the Bagthorpe series for my niece and friends who are having children. Even though I was labeled "gifted" as a child, Jack is readily identifiable and the books are written with such a gentle humor that they are well worth fighting for.

Really, are we supposed to let "Sweet Valley High" set the tone for our pre-adolescents?

If you love the English language and are truly very curious about the meanings of its words as reflected in the evolution of its origins and meanings, this is a "must have" book. I have used the 1966 issue of it for years now, and rate it more useful, although a companion book, to the seminal work of Walter Skeat. No library can realistically be said to be complete, nor can any lover of the English language, without both of these works.

Should be reprinted if not improved!

Over thirty years ago I begun developing the habit of consulting etymological dictionaries whenever I wanted to deepen my understanding of words. I equipped myself with several etymological dictionaries in each of the three languages I use: spanish, french and english (which share many words). Over the years and independently of the language that triggered a given search, I found myself increasingly going FIRST to Partridge's ORIGINS (acquired in 1977) and often feeling no need of consulting another dictionary.
Quite a number of years comparing etymological dictionaries! Hence I agree, it should at least be reprinted or, hopefully, edited anew after improvement by a team of experts knowledgeable of more recent research in the field.

I found this difficult to read, at first, because of the abbreviations used (literally 100's of different ones throughout the book) in each definition, but caught onto them over time. You get used to flipping to check the key when an uncommon abbreviation comes up. Once I became accustomed to that....it really opened up a wealth of knowledge.

This is a great resource, and highly recommended for anyone deeply interested in Etymology. It contrasts nicely with the online Etymology dictionaries, since the information offered in the book is a bit more in depth. The book also does a better job of cross-referencing related words than any website could.

It's an older book (the author died in 1979), but the information in here never gets old. The new print is pricey, but you can pick up used copies for a fair price. It's a great addition to any reference shelf.

Highly recommended, if you are an Etymology geek.

A little complex to use but once you get into it it can be fun. Set up like a dictionary so you need to thumb through it. Interesting resource though

If you have any interest at all in English etymology, you MUST HAVE THIS BOOK. Beg, borrow, bid, phone every used bookstore you can find -- do anything to get a copy of this book. This book is so good that when I came across a copy of it and skimmed it, all I could do was look back with new regret at the years I'd spent using other works I could now recognize as inferior.

This is simply the best book on English etymology I've ever seen -- beats the earlier etymological dictionaries by Skeats and Weekley hands down, and of course is superior to any normal dictionary's treatment of etymologies (OED, Merriam-Webster, etc.).

EVERY PARENT SHOULD READ THIS BOOK

If you read only one book on parenting ever, this is without a doubt the book you should read. Let's face it, your kids will be fine if you do not pick the perfect baby-mobile for them (as is the sort of topic included in most parenting books). However, it is too often that we see children severely injured or even killed because parents, intelligent and educated parents, were not made aware of the often quite simple safeguards that must be in place for our children to stay healthy and safe. As the mother of two very busy boys, I have found it overwhelming to think of every possible danger my boys may encounter. The news reports of children choking to death on everyday foods or strangling themselves with household items jolts our attention. We make the simple adjustments to safegauard our children from those particular hazards. However, most parents do not have the time to think of every possible danger or the information needed to keep our kids safe from them. Debra Smiley Holtzman has done this for us and done it well. Ms. Holtzman has tackled a huge amount of information and made it all easy to read, easy to retain and easy to implement. This is the most important parenting book I have read and I have read many.

A guide to eliminate the "Panic" in parenthood.

The Panic-Proof Parent is an exceptional resource for parents. Compared with any other book about child safety, Debra Holtzman has done an unprecedented job researching all the details that parents need to know, and she presents the information in a clear, concise, and effective way. This is not a simple repeat of the basic information you can find everywhere. It is an extremely thoughtful piece of work that reflects both her educational training as well as her deep caring about children. In an effort to thoughtfully address the safety needs of my family, I have looked through countless books on the subject. If I had it to do all over again, I need only have purchased one book - this book.

Excellent resource for children's safety!

We recommend "The Panic-Proof Parent" -- it's detailed, informative, and easy-to-read. Every who cares for a child should own a copy!

Did you know that you should never give honey to a baby under the age of one year? Or that lead may be present in your drinking water? How about the fact that you should make sure your water heater thermostat should be set at 120 degrees Fahrenheit or lower? If any of these items comes as a surprise to you, then you need the "Panic-Proof Parent."

Chock full of information that will help you create a safe lifestyle for your family, this book is one you should not be without. I was amazed to read about how many every day dangers are lurking in my house, car, in the air, and even in the food I feed my family.

I have read other safety books, but no other book is so comprehensive and well organized. The chapters are broken into a logical format, starting with recommendations that expectant mothers should do to guard their fetus.

Drinking water, pesticides, babyproofing, preventing burns, and pool safety are just a few of the crucial chapters that you will pour over when you get your hands on this terrific book.

Every parent worries about their children (it comes with the blessing) and some things are out of a parents hands. However, there are many precautions that you can take if you're armed with the appropriate information. This book will help empower you to do what you can to help ensure a happy, healthy environment for you and your loved ones!

A must for all parents!

This book takes place in ancient Greece. It is about the life of a young boy named Nic who faces many dilemmas in life. He is sent away from Athens due to the plauge. He meets Gellius, a sailor who dreams to win the pankration someday. Then Nic is captured and sold as a slave. Gellius was not captured. This story tells about his search for a friend, and his struggle.I think that this was a great book. My friend thinks it was too convenient for Nic sometimes and a little unrealitic, but I loved it.
This book was exciting, and made you think about your life too. This book was a wonder to our class(as we read it aloud in class) I give this book five stars. It was a book of great pain, suffering, and happiness. I hope you all read this book.

The book takes place in Ancient Greece where Nic is fleeing from the plague in Athens and encounters danger. The pankration is an olympic event where people fight without weapons. This is one great book, but it was missing a little information about the charecters and about what happened after the pankration.

PANKRATION: THE ULTIMATE GAME reflects the ancient but brutal sport of Pankration combat. It had but one rule & everything else was allowed even fighting to the death and/or maiming one's rival. .... The rules of combat are defined in the book. The book has an intriguiing love story which causes two cadets to fight for the same woman both men desperately crave.
