I was determined to finish this book just to count the number of times Georgia Durante mentioned how beautiful she was. It was a million plus. You get the drift. This little lady couldn't get over herself. Her poor daughter Toni took the brunt of her mother's bad, bad choices and paid the price. There was claptrap galore, from her inane, juvenile musings to the stupefying way she portrayed herself as a hapless victim. And the verbatim dialog? How could anyone possibly remember exact conversations from three decades ago? Come on!!

Georgia Durante should just have named her book, "All About Me". At least it would have been an honest if not vacuous biography by just another celebretard who managed to sleep her way to the top of the heap.

The author keeps you turning pages with an incredible life, as fast as the company she keeps. I enjoyed this read, the author's no nonsense delivery, the woman's perspective, and the story told straight and true. If there are embellishments, you wouldn't know it as it's told. An excellent memoir.

I have recommended Georgia Durante's The Company She Keeps to many of my clients who are recovering from being sexually, physically, or psychologically abused. Ms. Durante's story, her courage, and her subsequent success in a field dominated by men serves as a wonderful source of encouragement and inspiration. It is the true story of a very remarkable person who had many things to overcome, including not being taken seriously because she is so physically beautiful. When you read this book, you learn her inner beauty and strength.

Katherine Woods - The name to remember

Review Date: 2008-03-09
Katherine Woods' translation is the only English-language version of The Little Prince which captures the beauty, simplicity, clarity, and profundity of the Antoine de St. Exupery's classic, penned in French.

(The newer translation is appallingly horrid and bland, mistaken, and frankly perplexing.)

This is really not a children's book, although older children will appreciate it.

Don't measure the value by the thickness of the book. De St. Exupery, himself a WWI pilot, writes with a great economy yet produces here the most beautiful poetry with a delightful playfulness and childlike innocence -- a fresh vision which thus sees clearly and does not obscure the profound.

Mr. Fred Rogers used to quote from de St. Exupery, whose image and illustrations once graced the 20-franc note (in the days before the euro).

There simply is no other work like this one. It is an exceptionally rare treasure, a masterpiece.

Be sure to read Katherine Woods' translation. Read it privately, when you have time to savor each word. And keep a box of tissues nearby.

The Little Prince

Review Date: 2007-09-12
The Little Prince has often been heralded as a youthful book, required reading in elementary and high schools alike. In delivering it this way I think The Little Prince is missed by the only audience that is likely to truly appreciate it, that is adults. It is not an uncommon misconception that this is a children's book. Indeed, I keep the pictures stored on my computer, and am often asked where they came from. I reply that they are from one of my favourite books, and without fail the response is along the lines of, 'I don't mean to be rude but is that a children's book?'. 'No', I explain, 'it is not'.

The Little Prince is most needed, I think, by adults. It is easy to be caught up in, as De Saint-Exupery describes it, 'matters of consequence' and forget that it is not these matters which bring meaning to life. By pointing out the futility of professions practised endlessly and in isolation of other people, it becomes clear that the Little Prince, with his rose, is the only character with a life of consequence.

This book is beautifully written and translated by Katherine Woods. It speaks volumes through its simple tale, strange though it seems that matters such as these only become clear when they are somewhat removed from reality. Matters such as love, innocence, imagination and priorities. The Little Prince is a gentle and stirring reminder to never forget to see the boa constrictor from the hat.

Little Prince speaks to the child in me

I was an adult when i read this book, and i really appreciated the lessons in life that Saint-Exupery shares through the Little Prince.

A great book, full of beautiful illustrations, easy to read, while fun and sad at the same time.

I personally read it as if Exupery is sharing with us the conversations he has with his own inner child, in the image of the Little Prince. That is why the Little Prince would ask many questions, but rarely answer the ones he was asked. Like all our inner children he's been hidden inside and kept silent for a long long time, and now that he was given his chance, he will speak. And we better listen, for he is an integral part of our psyche, who will take us through the most unbelievable adventures.

Jeanne Carley clearly loves ferrets, as is evidenced by her awesome photography. If you love ferrets, you'll love the cute and lovable pictures in this calender. To make it even better, this year's theme is musical, making a music lover like me ecstatic. I can't wait to get to the next month to see the next picture! Having this calendar up at work also sparked interest among my co-workers about ferrets and gives me an opportunity to talk about my fuzzies. It's a shame that the Governator forgot his Kindergarten Cop days and lets misnomers about this wonderful pet rule his governorship. Once again, 3 cheers for Jeanne and her work!

The Ferret Calendar is my absolute favorite calendar of all. The photographs are outstanding! As I have had many ferrets over the years, and I'm an avid photographer myself, I know how hard it is to photograph them. Jeanne Carley does a wonderful job of portraying the ferret in such positive ways. Though there are other ferret calendars out there, I feel that this one is the best of all of them. Thank you Jeanne!! Please continue to produce this calendar as I am a customer for life!!

My son is not into Sesame Street at all, but he still loves this book. I bought it for him because I remember my mother reading it to me and my sisters when we were little. It's a classic that's still great for kids of all ages. My 1 year old loves the characters and my 3 year old loves the story. It's a great addition to our night time stories! I bought 2 so I could give one as a gift because I love it so much

Oh, the suspense.

Oh, the surprise!

Oh, I love reading this book with my kids.

In fact, it is the *perfect* book to read as I introduce a new food at mealtime, because everyone has to take a bite before we turn the page... to see what happens... with the MONSTER at the end of this book. (Mealtimes around here are often informal. Such is life.)

So in addition to a great kids' book, it's a great Mommy tool. I'm buying a copy to throw in the hope chests of each of my kids -- they can read it to their own families in 25 years.

Final Gifts is a thorough look at what to expect and prepare for with a loved one who is dying. Advice on how to deal with situations is so helpful. It gave me comfort in understanding the process and removed my anxiety on situations I was experiencing and did not know how to deal with. This book was so helpful in making my loved one comfortable as they were declining. I highly recommend Final Gift and have given the book to friends who are experiencing the same situation.

For anyone who works with Hospice,or the elderly, or who have family members on hospice care, it is an invaluable book. To learn about the communications of a dying person, and their needs to die in peace, it can radically transform the dying experience for the person and their loved ones from one of sadness to one of sacred beauty. Not to read it, could mean missing out on the important signs our loved ones give us, as they are leaving us or hinder our understanding of what they are trying to convey. I highly recommend this book.

There is no greater compliment than when a child tries to recite the book BACK to the parents. Boynton has accomplished that with "Barnyard Dance!" Our oldest daughter, who is three, has Developmental Apraxia of Speech. Words do not come easily for her. BUT she adores this book and tries to "read" it to us all the time. Guaranteed to please your little one, I promise.

The pictures are great and very helpful, and the directions are very simple and easy to understand. The food tastes great! Some of the recipes take a good hour or two to prep though, so make sure to read through the whole procedure before starting.

This a a great book for creative grill masters. One caveat: if you own an 18 inch weber kettle, be sure to adapt the coal amounts for your smaller grill. Otherwise you will fry your food faster than a hyper-active pyro. The author never bothers to mention how much fuel to use for various sizes of charcoal grills. Not once in the entire book. So, be carefull grill-jockeys and adjust down or up as needed. Otherwise, yum.

Exciting, excellent, effective. If you like cooking, learning how to do things, or are just visual by nature (most people are) you will most certainly enjoy this one. I have perused all of this authors books and have enjoyed his commentary; this book takes the cake (and has a double layer of frosting on top). If the new version of the Barbecue Bible was illustrated even semi-close to this book Stephen would have another huge hit.

"How to Grill" is more than just a fantastic cookbook. It is packed with information about grills, smokers, cooking tools, and other things of interest to those who want to know how to grill and smoke good food. As for the "recipe section," Raichlen gives great tips on technique, i.e., how to prepare the food for the grill, and to present it upon completion. He covers seasoning the food, sauces, rubs, and marinades. It is just a fantastic book for people of all levels of experience in grilling. It should be on every grillers book shelf.

So if you're like me with an autistic child, no doubt you have heard the hype. Vaccines. Are they the culprit? Some parents swear yes, some swear no. I have heard both sides and they both have very valid arguments. Both biased to their own cause. Then came my baby daughter. Do I vaccinate her or not? Diseases are coming back due to parents not vaccinating. But what about all the press? Is there a safer way to vaccinate? There is! Dr. Sears alternative schedule is clear, easy to understand and my daughter's pediatrician not only had no problem with it, but wanted to get the book for herself. It's a great reference guide too.

Worth every penny - an essential parenting read!

Review Date: 2008-07-18
I'd just like to echo what other reviewers have said. This book is the real deal. I originally got a book on immunization called "Vaccines: What Ever Parent Should Know" because Dr. Sears book was sold out and checked out of every library branch in the greater Boston area. What a joke that other book was - it presented none of the concerns that Dr. Sears shares. And after a bit of research, I found that the author of that book (Dr. Paul Offit) is a vaccine inventor and on the board of advisors for Merck. You'd think in the spirit of fair disclosure it would have said that on his author's profile. But I digest... :)

Dr. Sears' book is comprehensive and very balanced. He presents parents with the pros and cons for each drug as well as his own personal recommendations. His Alternative and Selective vacination schedules are worth the price of the book alone. Just be prepared - we requested to follow his selective vaccination schedule and were told that we could stay with our pediatric group practice if we did that. Its too bad - we really liked our pediatrician in every other respect. Just starting with a new practice that is more flexible and gives us a greater degree of choice in how we care for our child.

Couldn't recommend this book more highly. I'm buying a second copy for the pediatrician we are leaving. Hopefully, she'll read it and understand our decision a bit better.

Despite having my two older son's vaccinated per the AAP's schedule, when my newest bundle joined the flock, with all the "vaccination speculation" around I wanted to educate myself a bit more with the most unbiased and uninflamatory information I could find. I think this book is the most fair and balanced look at vaccines that I have found. Each vaccine has its own chapter where Dr. Bob talks about the risks of the disease, how common the disease is, the ingredients that make up each vaccine (and how the ingredients vary according to manufacturer), the risk of side effects with each vaccine, the risks of contracting the disease during travel... I was pleasantly suprised to see that he gave credence to concerns over some ingredients (mainly aluminum, but also human and animal tissue), while still supporting the use of (most)vaccines. He provides a couple different alternative dosing schedules (which include waiting 6 months to a year to start or spacing them out giving just two shots at a time). In some ways I wish I hadn't read the book (I had no idea what kind of creepy things were in some of those shots), but I am glad I am more educated on the matter and can make a better informed decision over what is best for my child. (And, if you are curious, this book gave me more confidence in my decision to start vaccinations at 6 months and use a slower dosing schedule.) I just was really suprised at how informative and non-judgemental this book seemed. People get so passionate about one way or the other it's hard to find a single place that can respect both sides of the argument and I feel Dr. Bob did a good job of doing just that.

Finally - the facts presented so you can make an educated choice rather than an emotional one!

This book is wonderful. Regardless of which side of the debate you are on or if you are somewhere in the middle, this book gives clear facts about each of the 12 childhood vaccines. These facts are presented in simple language so you don't need to be a doctor to understand the risks and rewards of vaccinating your children. Another wonderful book from the Sears series and one that truly speaks to the concerns of parents who must struggle with the questions of whether to vaccinate their children or not.

I was given this book to read by a friend at my church, and I reluctantly took it because I am not a huge reader. After the first chapter, I was hooked and couldn't put it down! There is a lot of good instruction, and the part I like most is Jim Cymbala backs up the instruction with real-life experiences and results. Granted, not all results will be similar to his, but he shows the foundation on which to build your life. I highly recommend this book (I bought one for my father, brother, and father-in-law).

It is not the most impressive thing that his wife, who has no training in music, helped to write, guide and direct, songs for one of the world's most loved groups, i.e. The Brooklyn Tablernacle Choir. What is a most impressive to me is that they have stayed right where they started about 25 years ago, continuing to be instrumental in thousands of changed lives of former drug addicts and pushers, prostitutes and pimps, gangs and gangsters, gays and lesbians in what is - except by the grace of the Holy Spirit - still in a dangerous area and with quite a few potentially very dangerous parishioners. People feel embraced by YHWH's welcoming Love in Cymbala's Church. And I believe it is His Love that protects them and moves them all.

With that background I knew I wanted to hear what this man has to say.
I wasn't disappointed. The message is simple as he would say himself:
Prayer, and lots of it, first. Everything else later.

Someone said, "Prayer is not preparation for the work. Prayer IS the work." Cymbala agrees.

One of the more inspiring books I've ever read. It makes you want to meet with Christ and see the power of what He can do. Read if you want to be humbled and empowered.

A few years ago, I wasn't just asked, I was TOLD to read a book called "Breakthrough Prayer," by Jim Cymbala. It didn't look like a brilliant title. But "Breakthrough Prayer" was simply amazing! Since then I've read "Fresh Power," and this book has simply been waiting on my shelf for me to pick it up. I finally did, and it is pretty awesome as well. Jim Cymbala is the pastor of the Brooklyn Tabernacle, and through the power of prayer, some awesome things have happened.

It had to start with a leap of faith. Asked by his father-in-law (and won't we do ANYTHING for the in-laws!?) was a question. Would Jim preach four Sunday nights at the Brooklyn Tabernacle, where things had hit an all-time low? Hmm! What would you do? Jim took a leap of faith. And there were times where he felt like quitting. But through it all, and still today, he is the witness of modern day miracles on the meanest streets.

Now, "Fresh Wind, Fresh Fire" is considered a classic by some people. And not because it talks all about Jim, his wife, Carol, and what He did. This is about an awesome God who broke through, just like He did in the days of Moses, Elijah, David, the days we seem to think are over. He tells stories of people like Charles Finney, D.L. Moody, men without a college education, who stormed the gates for Jesus Christ!

Stepping out in faith, and trusting is all God asks us to do. Jim Cymbala did just that. He illustrates the power of prayer. And time after time, you don't see Superman tales. You see ordinary people in the service of an extraordinary God. That's what makes this special. God writes the story, and we live it out! That's awesome!!!

A Call to Prayer

Cymbala's book more than anything is a call to prayer and earnest seeking of God. As a young man in the early 1970s he began pastoring the fledgling Brooklyn Tabernacle having had no formal training. Through his own brokenness and seeking God, he came to understand that God would bless the ministry and continue to bring people for them to minister to and introduce to Jesus if they would truly seek Him and not rely on their own devices or abilities.

As a result, the Tabernacle saw a great deal of growth and tremendous Christian ministry opportunities were opened to reach out to the people of Brooklyn and New York City as a whole. From the very beginning they made the cornerstone of their church the Tuesday evening prayer service during which they called to God and sought Him. Many extraordinary events occurred as a result and continue to happen today.

People who were once very closed towards Jesus come to true repentance and a real relationship with Him through this ministry. The Tuesday evening prayer ministry is so important that Cymbala will not accept speaking engagements if they keep him away from the prayer meeting more than one prayer meeting at in a row.
As a result of allowing the Holy Spirit to lead and direct them through seeking Him in prayer, they see lots of really cool stuff that could in no way be scripted.

Prayer is also an integral part of their Grammy award winning choir ministry with the weekly rehearsal incorporating at least 30 minutes of prayer to the practice.

Far from being a feel good type of book, Cymbala challenges the reader and today's churches to truly come before God and passionately seek Him in prayer and study of the Bible. He mentions various trends and how some churches try to cater to popular culture and make things cool and hip and while those things aren't bad in and of themselves, he emphasizes that it is a mistake to promote these flashy programs and neglect the ministry of prayer. Contrastingly, he points to the early church "These all with one mind were continually devoting themselves to prayer..." Acts 1:14 When believers and the church is in constant communion with God, He tends to work more actively and mightily.

I highly recommend this book as a reminder on the importance of prayer as well as a good high level overview of the history of the Brooklyn Tabernacle.
