Making Their Own Way follows the journeys of young adults who participated in a unique longitudinal study of 101 male and female college students begun in 1986 by Marcia Magolda. Drawn from over 300 interviews taken from graduation to their early thirties, we see through the participants' own stories the role of higher education as a preparation for participation in contemporary life outside academia. Magolda provides both observation and analysis as she derives a new framework for higher education designed to achieve better stewarding and fostering of students during the journey of transformation and maturation attendant to the years of higher education experience. An experience whose totality aspires to better prepare these men and women to assume leadership roles in the opening decades of the twenty-first century. Making Their Own Way is strongly recommended reading for educators concerned with the holistic development of their students and higher education's role in foster critical thinking, citizenship, and civic leadership.

I was brand new to an upper level administration job. Immediately, there were personnel issues I never had to deal with before, leaving me lost. After reading this book, however, I feel much more comfortable with employment law. This book is an excellent introduction and one I still use as a reference. It may be too basic for employment lawyers and seasoned HR directors, but for everyone else I think it is perfect.

The next giant step in the development of fatherhood!
Helpful Votes: 6 out of 7 total.

Review Date: 1998-11-02
In "Marathon Dad" (Avon Books, 1998) John Evans details the next giant step in the devlopment of fatherhood. Much effort has gone into the attempt to better connect men to their emotional lives. And equal energy has been invested in establishing appropriate limits for male behavior. But seldom, if ever, has there been a more detailed and concise attempt to integrate the reality of modern maleness with the passionate and heartfelt viccisitudes of fatherhood. In sparkling prose that reflects an intimate familiarity with the daily dramas of parenting, Evans takes on the ego-wobbling fears at core of modern dad's hesitancy to attach as much importance to diaper changing as slo-pitch softball; fear of confronting mom; fear of the mockery of other men; fear that in this domain, as in so many others, he will not be man enough. Evans provides the foundational gridwork upon which a strong structure of competent fathering can be built. When Freud was asked what mattered in life he responded, "Only two things - love and work." Evans amply demonstrates that the time has passed when the American man can in good conscience sacrifice one for the other. "Marathon Dad - Setting a Pace that Works for Working Fathers" is above all a book about love - a father's love for the most precious work he will ever share; his family.

I first read this little book, or rather had most of it read to me, when I was three. It is a delightful little story about a young boy who has to be home alone with his pet dog, Gus, waiting for his mom to get back from work. It details all of the antics of the afternoon in a way that children who are latchkey or home alone a lot can easily identify with.
I think your child would like it. Good to about age 9 or so.

This book is certainly worth its weight in gold. Kate Wendleton may have written her best guide with this one. The information about researching industries and companies before and after interviews is explained in no nonsense language. By being prepared like that one can certainly eliminate competiting interviewers as well as competing thoughts. Insight is also given for those who are looking to do consulting.
I was actually disappointed the book came to an end. There seems to be so much more Kate Wendleton has to offer on this subject. Five Stars.....Try more like 10!

Besides being an excellent Kellogg professor, Chernev knows a thing or two about the job interview process. He puts them all to paper in a style similar to his teaching texts- to the point, absent of fluff, and with a focus on only the important. Buy all of his job search works- they are quick reads, cheap, and all you're going to need

Mental Health is only Emotional Health

While we consider this little, the reality is that among the types of health, physical, economic, intellectual, and emotional or psychological, mental health is actually little more than psychological and emotional health. Where men deny their emotions, therefore, it is often conclusory that women are the ones upon whom mental health has been focused, leaving men once again in the desert of health issues. Where women regularly evoke their emotional needs, men seldom do, and society places numerous substitutes to deter, or defer, the issues that come automatically from being human, as if men were robots. Since men spend so much of their lives at work, this necessarily invokes the issues of healthful working environments that properly and appropriately honor the emotional lives of men, and do not treat them as robotic. Astute lawyers will begin to increasingly define the importance of mental health in work and employment issues as they have been forced to do for women (coming into the workplace with all of their emotional clothing). Having long denied males the same privilege, the integration of men and women in the workplace has the potential to overload the human resources department responsible for insuring the collateral issues that confront employees to insure productivity for the employer, and contented employees. Far from being "girlie men," the normal acceptance of human qualties is long overdue for men, and any company of social responsibility will jump at the chance to prove its image of "valuable work climates" for both men and women. This blossoming field of context in connection with both home and work environments, and the nexus of child raising must necessarily become the next giant step for corporations to address their corporate climate as worthy employers. Far from the hierarchial vision of the industrial complex, the 21st Century workplace that incorporates both men and women in positions of responsibility is advised to insure both physical health and mental health for its employees, as well as trying to handle the enormous task of diversity issue that have become one test of humanitarian excellence in a world increasingly complex and interdependent. For companies who ignore this vast area of health issues, they will continue to become the lumbering dinosaurs they must be in an integrated gender world where master/servant relationships and law have ignored the importance of human emotions as mental health. Correctly defining the existence of the whole human being was bound to come sooner or later.

I've been hunting for a job for just a few weeks now, and this book has really helped my attitude and methodology immensely.
The author puts together an interesting breakdown of job hunter personality types, and has some suggestions on how to approach interviews given the innate personalities of the interviewer and interviewee.
There is an excellent section which gives ideas for answers to some very typical and tough interview questions.
Priced at $0.49 this book is an absolute steal.
I'd also recommend the Five O'Clock Club's _Interviewing and Salary Negotiation_...

I really enjoyed this book. I recommend it highly. I spent 1984-85 in South Africa when the policy of "Apartheid" was the law. Races were heavily discriminated against, and some ended up as human slaves. Later, in 1998, I witnessed this again, but this time in a United States Commonwealth. The book, Modern Slavery and the Global Economy, identifies the horrific realities of Modern Slavery through first-person accounts. It also gives insight to the growing global economy and a possible connection. Well worth reading.
