This was a great book to read and learn about a very unique part of our news history. I admit that I would not have picked this book had I not been working on a paper for a graduate class, but I'm very glad I selected a topic that put a book like this in my reading path. It's an easy read and sectioned so that you can pick it up and put it down. If you're interested in this kind of history, reading it will give you an appreciation for how much the journalism field has changed.

In my working life, I've worked in every type of job situation there is - fulltime, parttime and casually. My jobs have been downsized, re-sized, up-sized and super-sized - sadly, in most cases, the wages just stayed regular-sized. I've worked for rent, for money and even for love.

And then came along the biggest job of all - the one with no pay and the 24/7 shifts but with all those "benefits" - those heart-squeezing smiles and those sweet "I love you, Mum"s - meted out just regularly enough to make up for the lack of sleep and ensure that the meals and clean clothes keep coming. That seemed to round out my amazing, unique working life.
I thought I was pretty special - and then I read Kirsten's book and realised I wasn't special at all.

When I happened upon Kirsten Lees' book, "Let go of my leg: how to get the working life you want after having children" the stories of women's experiences contained in the book really resonated with me as I realised that my experience of working was not all that unusual. Reading her book made me realise that women everywhere are used to chopping and changing jobs and molding their lives to suit external and internal circumstances. Pretty obvious to most, I know but sometimes when you're in the thick of experiencing, you don't always have the benefit of a broader vision of life - and the experience of motherhood can be very isolating. Lees' book acknowledged not the weakness in the malleability of women but the strength in it.

What I like best about Lees' book is that she is a cheerleader for women returning to work. Her book is full of encouragement and inspiration but best of all, it is also informative and practical - a real resource for women on how to negotiate working conditions, how to network, how to get back into the work saddle with the added plus of having a lot of warmth and humour.

Often women, being their own worst enemies - believe that they don't deserve to be able to return to work on the same track they left. Lees believes that the lack of confidence women have in themselves about returning to work is not necessarily based in anything but an societal expectation that they should be less confident about their skills and their prospects. Women often feel they deserve the 'punishment' of less pay or less responsibility for the brazen act of leaving work to have babies or care for elderly parents. I can't imagine a man ever feeling that way.

Review It . . .I Wrote It!

For over 20 years I have actively examined "why candidates get hired and who does the hiring" from both sides of the college recruiting process. The most commonly asked question heard over the past two decades remains "What can I do with a major in...?" Liberal Arts Jobs answers this query and many, many more. This, the most recent edition, was a blending of previous works and contains "state of the art" advice for recent and soon to be liberal arts graduates. As a job search coach I teach and reinforces skills required for successful search, including resume writing, correspondence, and interviewing. For those I coach and, I hope, those who read my publicatons, "job search is simple, not necessarily easy," because the process is broken down into easy to follow (yet challenging) behavioral steps and easy to accept motivational attitudes. To date, he I have critiqued over 9,500 resumes (I do count) and worked with over 12,000 job seekers (I guess, but don't exaggerate). Reflected in my writings, presentations, and counseling style, I beleive that job search doesn't have to be taken too seriously and that it is best undertaken with humor and positive affect. You, your son or daughter, or a family friend can be successful, even if they majored in English or Art History. Read the book. Be inspired to take action. Set goals. Establish job search and internship strategies. Create resumes and other job search tools. Go for it! Let me know what you think of the book. I continue to learn through your experiences and comments.

I regularly teach a drama unit which focuses on child labour, and have found that this book provides the most comprehensive range of resources to accompany it. It's got everything - facts, interviews, stunning photos... and a respect for the point of view of the children themselves. Although I usually just pick a few sections to read out in class, I often recommend that students take the book out of the library themselves, as it's very accessibly written, even for middle school students. The section on exploitation of young workers in industrialized countries, e.g. fast food employees, has some great material to get teenagers thinking about labour issues and the role that they can play in creating change in their own environment. But Springer also gets the reader to identify with children from all over the world, and that's what really makes this a fantastic resource.

Litigating the Sexual Harrassment Case is the best book on the topic of sexual harrassment that I have ever read. All lawyers must read this book to be successful. Matt Schiff is my legal role model.

I saw this book and realized that it didn't have a review yet - which I had to rectify. I used the previous version of this book for my move to Germany as this version was not available yet. I honestly do not know how we would have moved here and gotten everything done without this book! Great tips on the visa process and literally everything else you need to know as you're living in Germany. At various times we looked up information about doctors and pharmacies, apartment rental info, how to buy/register a car, get an oil change, travel, etc., etc. From the big stuff like arriving and departing and schools/family life to the little things like recycling and apartment issues that you feel silly asking a local - it's great!

Organized, clear, easy to read, good sense of humor; this is really a "How-to guide".

Like Switzerland, most part of the book is oriented to those who intend to live in German area, but French and Italian are well indicated also.

Suggestion: appendix as a small detachable book

Congratulations to Davis
