I found this text to be a great resource throughout the interview process. The subject matter flows well and makes it easy to read and use as a resource. Not only does the book cover phone interviews, behavioral and situational sample questions, it also gives you an easy to follow protocol on how to follow up after the interview and what to expect.

Definitely a valuable resource for anyone who has not interviewed recently.

As a resume writer and life skills instructor in the correctional system, I found this book to be the most accessible and encompassing book on the market. It addresses every fear and concern facing inmates as they return to the world looking to be productive citizens. It shares resume tips, interview responses, cover letters, and keeping the job once you get it. Sull writes in a realistic, positive, and straight forward manner. I highly recommend it!

I just had an opportunity to read this book (someone loaned me their copy)and was fascinated. It's quite possibly the best book on librarianship that I've ever read. It is so interesting to read about how people deal with their lives as librarians. It's also great on practical tips. Having worked in academic libraries for over 40 years I think I know libraries and it's clear that the writers and editor really know what they're talking about. I had read some of the articles written by the editor, Karl Bridges, in American Libraries and elsewhere, but didn't realize what a great writer he was until I read this book. This book is something that every working librarian should read. In fact, I have a niece who is thinking about becoming a librarian and I plan to buy her a copy. I just wish I had had something like this when I started working as a librarian.

Great Book!

I just had a chance to finish this book this weekend. This is a wonderful book! The editor has put together a fascinating collection of essays from librarians all over in all different kinds of libraries. They talk about their lives, how they do their jobs, and the challenges that they face moving into a new era.
This is a must-read for anyone who is interested in how librarians work now. It gives both philosophical insights as well as practical tips of value to both working librarians and those aspiring to be librarians. It's not valuable just for librarians, but for anyone interested in understanding the changing nature of work in America.
The writing is clear, crisp, and entertaining. The book is also well organized and edited with a useful index. Besides librarians this book would also be useful for any place that is doing career guidance -- one of the best overviews of what it means to work as a librarian that I have ever seen.
The only bad part about this book is the cost... I hope that they do a ... paperback version of this as soon as possible since it deserves to be on every librarian's bookshelf. There's nothing even remotely comparable to this book available. A real contribution to the literature!

All of Wendy Enelow's books on resume writing are excellent. She is particularly good at providing examples of powerful resumes and illustrates the principles she talks about to grab an employer's attention.

This book is simply written, contains the most important information you need to know to do a good resume and an assortment of formats, different types of resumes, etc.

I have used this book with my clients and I highly recommend it for those that are returning to work. It is encouraging and shows you how to take your transferable skills and present them in the best possible light.

Surprisingly valuable - more than a list of resumes!

I really like the format and targeted focus of this book. It's a big 8 1/2 by 11 book - easy on the eyes. The first 62 pages gives good solid advice on the HOW of resume writing. It includes strategies for job search, gathering information, and examples of formatting styles. The rest of the book gives many examples of resumes and analyzes what the resume is designed to emphasize and why. If you are returning to the employment world after an absence - for any reason - this book is practical and mind expanding.

The first thing I worried about after incorporating my business and before hiring my first employees was all the employment laws I had to follow. I had been warned that there are many laws that I need to comply with proactively to ensure minimal problems in the future. I knew that starting a small business and making it succeed would be very hard and I didn't want to make it any harder by leaving myself open to legal liabilities. I originally had to look through several references trying to understand all the different employment laws till Nolo released this book last year and I felt a huge relief.

This book contains hundreds of pages of information that is very nicely organized. Here's why - there are 19 federal employment laws covered in this book (a chapter for each law) and the best chapter is the introductory chapter that explains how to use the book! It addresses the need of how to figure out which of the 19 federal employment laws apply in your business situation. It outlines the process you need to follow to establish this. This was one of the most difficult things for me. After reading this section, I systematically followed the instructions for each law and came up with a chart that uniquely applies to my business. It doesn't take more than a few hours to do this.

Each chapter also has selected portions of the actual law. The way you can distinguish the main chapter from these sections on the actual law is the smaller print. The only complaint I have against this book is the very small print used in printing these selected portions. Recently Nolo went from large books to small books (same material, just smaller font) and they didn't account for the smaller font becoming really small during this conversion! So if possible, look for the original larger books unless you have excellent vision and don't mind reading such small print. I guess Nolo took the old adage 'don't forget to read the small print' literally :-)

But seriously, this book is just fantastic. Each chapter is split into various meaningful sections. For example - there is the section on definitions, an overview section, an enforcement section, a section for employers, and a section for employees. There are also sections on the agencies charged with enforcement and compliance, and the state laws relating to the subject. These sections are further divided into record keeping tips, penalties, practical tips, etc.

This book keeps in mind the practical aspects of the law as applicable to the reader. It is saving us thousands of dollars that we might have had to spend otherwise in gaining the necessary knowledge of the various employment laws. By the way, there are also references in each chapter on where to obtain the relevant forms. In the past, I had spent countless hours trying to figure out where I could find the forms to download (it took a long time even with Google's help). But with this book's help, I spend just a few minutes to find these forms!

As usual, Nolo explains everything in plain English so you don't need a legal background to understand the law. This book is meant for both employees as well as employers. Pick up a copy of this book if you need any kind of information regarding employment law and you won't regret it. We haven't so good luck!

Thank you, Katie Dorn! What a reassurance that I am not alone in making the difficult transition from career woman to stay-at-home mom. Dorn hits the nail on the head on all major issues concerning wanting to be a "good mom" but feeling miserable while the "perfect moms" act as though being a stay-at-home mom is the easiest job in the world. Written humorously in a "easy-reading" style that is easily read in a few evenings or in bits and pieces. A MUST HAVE book for any transitional mom.

Delightful and reassuring for stay at home moms.

Dorn had a way of seeing the humor in a serious decision many women are making. I was happy to read that other moms had similar feelings of brain mush and boredom at times. It reassured me that I was doing the right thing for me and I wasn't alone.

Get Talent! by Paul C. Green, Ph.D. is the answer to an interviewer's prayers. In this unique book, Dr. Green has virtually eliminated the guesswork from the interviewing process. He has created an easy, fool-proof, step-by-step style of interviewing that helps the interviewer predict job performance in a fair and defensible way. By utilizing the practical information and questionnaires included in this valuable book, the interviewer is able to stay focused while bringing out the best attributes in the candidate and by removing the intimidation factor that oftentimes is present in an interview. This book has been a godsend to me in my recruiting endeavors, and I feel it will be to anyone else in charge of hiring employees...from personnel recruiters in the corporate world in charge of hiring dozens of employees to the business managers in small businesses who hire only a few employees.

Get Talent !!!! This is a Winner!!!

Getting Real: Helping Teens Find Their Future

A must read for teens (and parents who want their teens to succeed)
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-02-21
First mechanics: Getting Real is extremely well written. Dr. Gray weaves together statistics, ideas and research into a well organized, easily read 128 pages.

Secondly material: Sadly, too many teens are making career plans using information that is at least a decade out of date. Getting Real accurately updates readers at warp speed.

Dr. Gray bravely tackles the myth that a university degree is the key to a successful career and that all university degrees lead to high paying jobs. In today's job market, this just isn't so. Dr. Gray shows why success for today's teens will depend as much on creating detailed and achievable post-high school plans as it does on getting good grades. His definitions of career maturity for 10th and 12th grade students are revolutionary.

His ideas will come as a shock to Boomer parents who believe that teens should put off making career decisions as long as possible to keep all options open. Dr. Gray explains in detail why this old advice is bad advice.

The global economy has created a job market is volatile and complex. High school and college teachers have little training about labor market realities or effective career planning techniques. Therefore, successful transition from school to work is an individual responsibility. Getting Real provides teens the guidance they need to create sound strategies for building their first career paths.

Ken Gray has dared to challenge what we all have come to believe to be the "right" path for a student to follow after high school. The truth is that times have changed and the path to success no longer follows the same pattern it once did. I highly recommend this book for anyone who works in close contact with high school students. Many students go to college because they feel it's the only option... then drop out because it isn't for them. Ken Gray's book points to another option for helping these students to succeed.
