Stedman Graham is a master of leadership. His work on diversity is rich with insight. His concept of leaders not labels is brilliantly relevant to not only the US culture but eqally critical to optimize the benefits of this new "flat world" global economy. The richness of our differences is one of the keys to our competiveness and innovation both as organizations and individuals. This is a book every one should read if they want to improve thier quality of life and influence. Buy it, read it and live it.

Stedman Graham asks, "What do you do with your twenty-four hours?" I say give this book to everybody you know.

Mr Graham is very well grounded in his thinking and gives a fundamental and practical guideline for not only business people, but for all of us who believe that we can change the world one thought, one person at a time. This should be required reading from high school on into college.

Grotelueschen is Brilliant

Review Date: 2001-10-30
It is difficult to come by this book at the price tag on a limited budget, but the read is well worth it. Grotelueschen displays a firm grasp of military theory and how that theory is applied or in some cases misapplied. The voice Grotelueschen captures is one of an insider no doubt learned in the hallowed halls of West Point. His firm grasp of all things army belies a thorough understanding of how artillery played a role in the stalemate of World War I trenches. It is a voice to be listened to and heeded.

We reach out to history to not repeat the mistakes of the past. If we ever get involved in stalemate trench warfare again in the wine country of France, let's hope that all artillery commanders have this book on their reading list.

Bottom line, this author Mark Ethan Grotelueschen is brilliant.

Avoiding Costly Mistakes

Review Date: 2003-08-01
I wish I'd had this book available to me 12 years ago when I was a small business owner. I made several - very costly - hiring mistakes which I could have avoided if I had Quinn's guidance. Quinn teaches the reader to cut through the prospective employee's glossy shell, that persona created especially for the interview process. I understand that the interview subject wants to put his best foot forward during a hiring interview. But now, thanks to Quinn's book, I have the tools to determine the more realistic motivations of a potential hire. I've also used these principles to become a better negotiator and recommend this book as a companion to Quinn's second book "Have the Attitude".

Made a measurable difference

This book made a difference for me. If you take the time to understand the simple principals the author presents, and apply them (not quite as easy as it sounds at first, but second nature after awhile), it will pay off. One of the BEST things I got out of it, though, is that I am a much better manager than I was before I read it, so it's not JUST for hiring. It's good for self-improvement as well.

I am responsible for screening and hiring people for both creative and technical positions, and the principals in the book applied equally regardless of job level or function. The last hire I found was the most difficult from the standpont of selection (I was lucky enough to have several very good candidates), but after evaluating each using what I learned, one rose to the top, and we hired her. She turned out far better that I expected. Coincidence? Maybe. Why mess with success, though?

It's a very quick read, and for the most part direct and to the point. I suggest you read it from front to back (don't skip chapters, as they build from one to the next), then keep it in your desk to use as a reference for awhile.

Basically, it deals with understanding how much control people perceive they have over their environment, where their true passions lie, and how that applies to the position. The author makes some very important points on how easy it is to make the mistake of assuming the person with the best skills is always the best for the job!!! That's what made the biggest difference in my approach.

This is really an oversimplification, but it gives you a little insight.

A friend suggested this book after she used it to get into pharma sales from advertising sales. I inquired with other pharma reps when I wanted to do the same and all suggested it highly so I bought it. If you follow the guidelines and add your own unique touches you should be able to break into this business. In actuality it could probably help anyone trying to change their career direction, it's all about knowledge and truly learning the ways of craft that you desire. This book it DEFINITELY worth it! I followed every step and got an offer.

After 3 interviews with 3 large Phamra companies, I landed a pharmaceutical sales job. This guide was great in helping me figure out exactly what the interviewer was looking for in a sales candidate. This is a VERY realistic guide since a guy that actually DOES the interviewing for a pharmaceutical company wrote it.

A must have guide for anyone trying to get into this industry.

Thanks,

Tina

Review of 'Dyslexia in the Workplace' by Diana Bartlett and Sylvia Moody, published by John Wiley (previously by Whurr).

I would like to highly recommend this book: it gives invaluable information and advice about dyslexic difficulties in the workplace. It is aimed at three audiences: (1) dyslexic people who are having difficulty at work; (2) dyslexia professionals, such as tutors and psychologists; and (3) employers, in particular HR and training managers, and occupational health professionals.

In the first section of the book the authors explain the range and nature of dyslexic difficulties, and also deal with a related set of difficulties, dyspraxia. They show how these difficulties can affect work performance and describe in detail how the difficulties can be assessed. A particular strength of the book is that much attention is given not just practical difficulties but also to the emotional problems which are related to these. The book also does full justice to the strengths which dyslexic people have.

The second section of the book gives a wealth of strategies for dealing with the difficulties, and building on strengths. There is advice on work organisation, efficient work methods, reading with recall and comprehension, writing workplace documents, techniques for improving memory, oral skills, and ways of dealing with negative emotions, such as anxiety and frustration.

Particularly valuable are the sections which give advice to both the employer and employee on the sort of reasonable adjustments which can be made in the workplace to help dyslexic employees maximise their potential.

I found this book very easy to read, and extremely informative. I felt the authors really empathised with dyslexic people, and knew exactly what help they needed. They also understood exactly what employers need to know. I also liked the fact that they avoided jargon, and seem to be speaking very directly to their readers.

No miracle cure, just common sense. That's what I liked about this book. Dyslexic people often lack in certain areas of every day life in the workplace such as organisation, planning skills, taking notes, passing correctly phone messages, etc. The author offers very handy tricks and work methods to tackle these difficulties. In other words: Tackling the problem from the root source. I was amazed at how simple and/or common-sensed these solutions were. Even non-dyslexics could greatly benefit from the many practical advice found in there, as well as helping them to understand the often very subtile difficulties of dyslexic adults in the workplace.

There is a section about how to cope with stress, insecurity and negative feelings. I found that to be very helpful - I would definitely recommend "Dyslexia in the workplace" to all dyslexics, their employers, family and friends alike.

Warp speed jobs, high tech skills, free agent employees
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 1999-02-19
This book is based on the practical experience of Peter Weddle who is president of Job Bank USA, an electronic resume database company. Although this book may strike you as self-promotional, Weddle discusses three topics in detail that I found of particular value: 1) the importance of developing a "perpetual resume;" 2) the two factors that strongly influence the format of an electronic resume; and 3) a well-defined approach to integrating format and substance to satisfy both a computer and a human reading your resume. Weddle does an excellent job of describing their importance within the context of warp speed jobs, high definition skills, and free agent employees. Bravo!

This manual/disk set is for the practitioner. While it has a great section on the ADA related aspects of the employment process, it is really a comprehensive "how to hire the best person" manual. The accompanying disk (in a word processing format) contains all the model letters, forms, interview questions, etc. in the manual, so you don't have to retype!

Useful Multi-Media Search Tool

Review Date: 2001-10-29
The Employment Opportunity combination of book/CD format is really useful. For getting started, the book itself is very easy to follow. Then the CD-ROM allowed me to see what industries employ workers in my occupation, and the websites provided me with tons of information that I hadn't known existed. I got names, addresses, and phone numbers of employers in the industry for the areas where I want to live and work. This is a great job search tool!

Review Date: 2001-10-30
This book should be required reading for high school and college students trying to decide on the best career for them, as well as for anyone who is unhappy with their current job and looking for something better. The book is fun to read, with lots of examples, and the CD-ROM is easy to use. There are good tips on how to prepare for interviews and follow-up with employers after interviews. In these tough economic times, this book is a great investment for anyone looking to improve their job situation.
