this book was a lifesaver, i lent it to a friend and my dog chewed it up but i will not dis ard it until i replace it, and i am not in an alcoholic situation now-which attests to its strength. id like to say thanks to this book but god helped also. this book was a lifesaver and it helped to keep me on track , it wont make it easy, but it will remind you of the hard work you must do. and when you forget what you are doing or why it will agian remind you. i am now looking to replace my copy. it is a small book only 150 pages and can fit in a purse but well worth the money!! good guidance never gets old or outdated. please read this if you are looking for a way out, feel alone, don't know where to turn or need help and can no longer do what you are doing.

When I was doing alcoholism interventions in the eighties, I would buy this book by the case from Ballantine. It was a must read for family members and friends before we intervened to help the alcoholic. It is written for the lay person and is easy to read and understand. This book helps dispel the myth "You can't help an alcoholic unless he wants help". It also teaches the importance of having a professional orchestrate the intervention.

Written by Thomas W. Morris III CMF, Career Mechanics I: Solutions to Common Career & Employment Problems is a solid advice and employment guide written for all sides of the hiring table. Divided into four parts offering guidance to career seekers, employees, human resource managers, and career coaches respectively, Career Mechanics I covers everything from interviews, resumes, and first impressions to the value of networking and, for human resource managers, how to deal with a new employee who just doesn't measure up. Presenting its points in plain terms and bite-sized paragraphs, Career Mechanics I is a thoroughly accessible guidebook and highly recommended for its practical wisdom and expertise.

"Career Mechanics I" has excellent information for first time job seekers. I work in a university and I give this book as a present to my senior student workers. It's packed with good advice about selecting a career and searching for a job. Better, it gives them superb information regarding keeping -- or moving from -- their first job.

Creep's time travelling adventures may be too harrowing for younger readers; in the past he is subjected to apalling child labor (slavery) and physical abuse. However, this is an important subject for older kids. The book is intriguing and suspenseful, and will keep you reading so you will learn some general history in a uniquely concrete, real way. I couldn't put the book down; but I felt the end did not explain everything to my satisfaction, the novel's only drawback.
Intense--and all the more worthwhile

This book is what led me to become interested in the Victorian period. You can't put it down. Younger children will be put off by the unfamiliar English, but older children who have a little more historical background and patience with language will like it. I think this is a brilliant depiction of the horrors of the Industrial Revolution, where child labour was so brutal and so prevalent. Stylistically, it's lyrical and has what we don't often see: the "kind of" happy ending. It really makes you think about our own society and where we have come from. Books like these are important because children can feel a link to kids in the past, and therefore come to a better understanding of the past. Yes, it's gruesome (children get beaten and disfigured), but that's historical truth for you. This is the perfect antidote for the books (and teachers) that insist on never rocking the boat. A thoughtful child of about 11-14 will enjoy this book.

This book is a short but fairly in-depth and honest attempt at describing the ins and outs of successfully becoming an assistant professor of biology. I recently used this book to fine-tune my own job application, and found the result to be a resounding success. Topics covered include writing up cover letters, CVs, and teaching and research statements, and etiquette and important people skills for the interview. I found the book to be very helpful in detailing these issues, and was impressed that the book caters to applicants looking for jobs not just in traditional research universities, but also in smaller, teaching-oriented schools. The biggest strengths are: 1) full examples illustrating the main points of the text (e.g., an actual cover letter is included in the section dealing with writing a successful cover letter), and 2) a clear presentation of how search committees think through the job search process. The former is important because, regardless of how much advice a job seeker might receive, nothing beats seeing a successful application package. The latter is important in that it brings home the importance of basic people skills. After all, the people interviewing the job seeker are looking for both a colleague and someone to chat in the halls with on a daily basis. The only real negative to the book as I can see is the chapter dealing with negotiations once an offer is made - I found this chapter to be completely useless in my own job negotiations, and I would go so far as to say the language is quite wishy-washy and indefinite.
Fantastic Resource!

This book is well-written, clearly laid out, and actually really fun to read. As someone just beginning the job hunt in academic biology, I'm not sure I would be well equipped to put together an application packet without this tool. I strongly recommend it to all young biologists.

I found CompControl to be a really useful resource on Workers' Compensation insurance. It explains the fundamentals of how Workers' Comp. insurance is priced, and then goes on to explain how overcharges can occur, and what can be done to prevent or correct them. Best of all, it's not written in an overly-dry way, as many technically-oriented books can be. This is an insurance book for non-insurance professionals who want to get an insider's knowledge of Workers' Comp. I think it would be very useful for business owners and managers of companies of all sizes.

Most employer-oriented books that I've seen on workers comp are usually anti-employee screeds in disguise. Not with Mr. Priz's book. He gives a business owner the hard facts on how to REALLY control his/her comp costs. And that starts with knowing what all the various WC 'adjustments' in your policy are, and how to systematically bring them into line with what the business claims experience is. All in all, a great book by a respected, seasoned premium analyst in the workers' comp industry.

I spent endless hours looking for a job once I graduated from college. A few times I wanted to give up and just stay home. But a college friend of mine told me about this book and my luck changed. I revised my cover letter and resume and the next thing I knew I got three interviews and three offers. Thank you Bob for helping me land the job of my dreams!!!

This book was my savior during my job search as I was preparing to graduate from college. Every book I looked at for help on resumes was designed for someone who already had professional work experience. This book shows you how to take your part time college jobs and recreational experiences and turn it into intensely desirable stuff. It shows examples of resumes by college major, with infinite examples and explanations. It was so successful for me, in fact, that I now buy it as a present for all my friends when they graduate and head into the work force.

Excellent - Well worth the money. I've already used the Info Tech Employment books. Students and other professionals often ask me--how do I get a job in IT. Now I know where to tell them. Every major company hiring and consultant company I know is here. What bundle of good research for a jobseeker just to call and send the resume.

This book is a study of the tactics that gay men use to keep their sexual orientation hidden from their (often homophobic) co-workers. It scares me how accurate it is. Let me give you an example, I once had a male teacher who said, "I was once going out with this woman who blah, blah, blah." Well, many straight people would think, "Okay, girlfriend equals straight." But a critical reader would see that the man said, "Once!" Many openly gay men used to date women. This book mentions tactics like acting weird so that co-workers just dismiss you as asexual, emphasizing your love of sports in order to hide the fact that you're not involved with a woman, being so liberal that when you mention gay rights co-workers think you are a leftist rather than gay, etc. If straight people read this book, gay men would never be able to hide. This book was both a gift and a weapon. Some have critiqued it asking why anyone would want to study, and subconsciously encourage, men to be closeted. However, this book does talk to men about their being out in the workplace and how they did it. We need more studies like this. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. However, it could be incredibly dangerous if placed in the wrong hands.
