I stumbled onto this book while I was browsing on... and I was very, very surprised to see how insightful many of the tips are. I bought 3 copies -- one for my daughter and two for her friends. I noticed that she read the whole book cover to cover. Let me tell you, that's the highest praise a book can receive.

I have two kids in college and think that this book is a wonderful collection of advice. It combines the type of advice that you would hear from parents, siblings, and friends. I loved the mix of serious, practical, and light-hearted sayings.

What a wonderful book! Being a teacher and an ex New Yorker, this book transported me back in time and space. I loved it and am reading it for the second time and then plan to send it around to some friends to read. What a wonderful teacher Mrs. Tilson must have been---and probably still is. What patience and what love for kids she has...!!!These vignettes must be read by all teachers..and shared by all!!

Each child in your charming book, The Colorful World of a Barrio Kindergarten,is delightful and winning in his or her own way. Who could not love each one. Plus you've told their stories in the best way possible: you painted a world and a place that I could "see' in my imagination. No writer has a greater gift than that. And no student had better teacher than "teacha". I wonder at your ability to be both an inspirational teacher as well as a fine writer. You are blessed. And we readers are blessed to have you as our "teacha" about a heartbreaking world most of us never knew existed. Thanks for the journey.

This is a wonderful book. Liza Tilson writes with great love and respect for her young students. I was touched and encouraged by this beautifully written piece--by its positiveness and its insights into the heart of her classes. It's powerful and all true, yet it reads like fiction. Liza is one of those rare teachers who cares about her students and that love and compassion shines through each of the chapters.

This book is a beautiful collection of stories.... each one a child and a reminder that we must take greater care of them... but most of all that we ought to listen to them... it is also a testimony to the devotion of the author for her work and the huge difference that a single adult willing to listen can make.

The book is very well written allowing the reader to understand the feelings of both the child and the author and the occasional paraphrasing of the children's expressions in spanish works admirably well. I recommend this book to anyone interested in children or who has children of their own

In my experience, adult learners tend to be wary of spending any more of their precious time on grammar lessons. Instead they want a chance to use what they already know to express themselves, and to learn more about other cultures. "Compelling Conversations: Questions & Quotations on Timeless Topics" provides just such opportunities, in an engaging and teacher-friendly format. The 45 chapters are arranged by topic to address universally relevant themes such as "Your Life" and "Modern Times". Each chapter takes a semi-structured approach by providing open-ended questions, targeted vocabulary, proverbs, and quotations. There are no rigid lesson plans here, only springboards to lively personal and inter-cultural exchange. From my own background in classrooms on three continents I can say that this rich collection of material would be an ideal addition to the toolkit of any teacher still inspired by the notion of free speech.

I first tried this fantastic textbook with a high intermediate student that I tutor. I was amazed from the start at how naturally the conversation flowed. We were only halfway through the first set of questions when she decided to buy her own copy. Each of the 45 chapters includes a vocabulary section and list of around 12 to 15 classic quotations, along with between thirty and forty questions. The chapters can be used in any order, but I recommend starting with chapter one as it orients the students to the textbook and shows them how to get the most out of subsequent chapters. Either in the classroom or one on one, it's accessible to intermediate students and challenges advanced students. The quotations, from Socrates to Shaw and from Picasso to Pete Rose, are all identified by name, when they lived, and what they did. This book is truly a treasure.

Compelling Conversations is an effective tool for teaching conversational English to ESL students. However, it's combination of topic prompts to promote conversation and intriquing quotations to inspire thought make it a great tool for any composition instructor.

Having trouble coming up with a good prompt for your college comp. class free-write assignment? Compelling Conversations will provide you with seemingly endless choices.

I strongly recommend this book for any instructor interested in promoting conversation in and out of the classroom, and for any student interested in improving their English language conversational skills.

A valuable tool indeed !

Advanced students who are in need of authentic conversation practice will benefit well from using this book. The content is varied, authentic, and relevant. The questions under each topic create a stable, thorough framework for personal sharing. The result is that students get meaningful practice and experience a really supportive atmosphere. I often use the book as a 'warm-up' tool to get students engaged in speaking, and it compliments the dryer ESL texts by having more depth.

This is ONLY EXERCISES not Lessons

I am disappointed because I read the description and reviews that said this book would TEACH children how to tell time. I read statements about this being a complete book, and children didn't understand how to tell time until they used this book.
Those are misleading statements. (In my opinion) A person that knows nothing about telling time, cannot learn soley by this book. Someone still needs to explain it.
That said, I think this is a Great WORKBOOK. It has many exercises that include learning to read time charts (as in a shark feeding schedule for 3 sharks). There practices for analog and digital times, and many "word problems" to figure out what time certain events happen. That takes up the first 132 pages of the book. Pages 133 - 316 are money exercises. It shows the front and back of each denomination of coin, and explains how much each one is worth, and introduces the dollar bill.
The exercises are colorful and fun. This book will also help children practice writing numbers. They will learn different ways to pay the exact amount for items (which coins to use).
There are award certificates to fill in when the child has finished all the assignments.
The back pages are answer sheets, and tucked inside the back page is a bookmark/ruler.
I recommend this Workbook-"The Complete Book of TIME & MONEY" - it is worth the retail price; even better at the sale price.

Our child was struggling to learn the concepts of time and money. So I turned the to the familiar Complete Book series in search of a book on the topic. Viola! The search engine here on Amazon picked the Complete Book of Time and Money. The title of this book really says it all. It is a book which will teach your child step by step to master the concepts of time and money. The pages are parent/child friendly with clear instructions and colorful illustrations throughout. By the time your child has completed this book they will have a firm grasp on the concepts of time and money.

I came across this book originally at Sam's club for $4.99, and picked it up for my son. We are homeschooling 6 children and my wife liked the book so much that she color-copies the pages so my daughter can also do the assignment. She makes several copies so even the little ones can 'try' it.

Unfortunately, the cost of color printing at home is not negligible. Since she liked it so much I returned to Sam's to buy 5 more copies, but they were sold out and would not re-stock. I hesitated in paying $10-11 per copy, but the kids really eat this up and have rocketed in their understanding of time, money and math in general using this book. It is a great accessory for learning.

I finally bit the bullet and bought 5 more copies at the $10-11 price. It will be worth it, considering that is the cost of one print cartridge for a color printer these days.

I only regret I did not know how good this book was, and I did not purchase several copies the first time around.

I have taught five and six year olds for years. This year I'll be working with four year olds. I bought about a dozen books to help with my programming but this really is the only book I needed to buy. It's FANTASTIC! It tells you what to do for morning circle, story ideas, music and movement ideas, a range of learning centres that cater for the preferred learning styles of the children and then ideas for reflection in the closing circle. It does all this on hundreds of themes and then gives assessment ideas too. I LOVE THIS BOOK.

Really, if books like this were read more often in schools, I bet bullying would decrease. This is a great show of what happens when we treat people badly for being different from us and just how the underdog will rise again. For a children's book, it is surprisingly complex and all the more powerful for the story Yashima weaves. Apparently this was based on personal childhood experiences of Yashima and I find it more than impressive he managed to put them all into literature. It also shows the way of another culture, thus allowing us a little much-needed cultural understanding. Yashima's illustrations, true to his talent, are wonderful and do their fair share plenty in expressing the changing moods of this story.

TThis book is terrific...It answered many questions I had about sales approach to b2b selling. If you are selling b2b or your product/service has a high value, you will love the tools this book will give you to succeed! It has great examples, and useful exercises to make the material 'stick'. Rob breaks everything down to minute detail, so everything is duplicatable and understandable. I hope to see an audio version sometime in the future. I love the questioning sequences detailed by Rob and his honest and ethical approach to every step in the sales cycle.

This book also teaches you how to use the selling principles in everything else in life from managing employees to bringing up children. I am already beginning to be more pursuasive with my fiance and my boss. I am loving it!!!

Robert Jolles teaches you very SOUND techniques and not hype like Tom Hopkins, Zig Ziglar or Joe Girard. I love the fact that he was a senior sales training consultant at Xerox, which is world-known for its investment in sales research and its training methodologies.

Repeatable and Predicatable....can you really find that?

Clearly defines the steps to making a sale along with the understanding of how and when a customer makes a buying decision. People don't make a large purchase decision until they have a "problem". So if you are selling large ticket items and or programs, then you better understand how to move the decision maker into the "problem" stage. I thought that the author's examples and situations outlined in the book were excellent and really drove home the points he was making. It is an easy read and thoroughly enjoyable!

Good Book - but its missing that little "something"

I am pretty new to the world of sales - a reluctant salesman who has realised that selling is central to success in any relationship based endeavour. What I have been searching for is a sales 'system' - a repeatable process that allows you to 'advise' the client for mutual benefit, rather than simply sell him. And Robert Jolles almost hits the mark. He gives you a sales strategy - a strategy with 8 steps in the selling process, that with a bit of practice will make the sales call more of a consultation.

But, for me, the book contradicted its title somewhat. This is particularly evident where Jolles uses the boxing metaphor for selling (he compares selling to you and your client stepping into the ring for a few rounds) and 'bleeding' your client. Now maybe I'm naive, but I think this is what is totally wrong with the sales profession - I don't think you're ever fighting your client, or should be trying to 'bleed' him or her, or make him hurt.

Now perhaps Jolles was simply trying to make the point that the client needs to be fully aware of the implications of his/her problem etc, but it was the way he says it that shows he doesn't have the customers true interests at heart. And to me,its the philosophy of the sales professional combined with sales effectiveness that is critical to building long-term, mutually benefical client relationships.

I would recommend this book to you - it teaches a sound sales process that is repeatable. But for me it missed that extra something.

I eagerly await the 3rd edition of this book. As a fully involved CF parent, my 8y/o daughter's care has benefited from my increased knowledge. I can form theories and question her caregivers from a more informed perspective and that is a win-win situation. If you have a child with CF, you should have this book. I call it the CF Bible.(Although encyclopedia would be a more accurate description.) I feel this book should be given to the parents of all newly diagnosed children.

Im a teenager and was diagnosed with CF when I was born in 1989.
It was recently that I wanted to do some more reading on my disease. I looked through some books and was shocked by what I was reading. As many of you know, the out-of-date books on CF can have some very frightening information, like death and more infections, and etc. It was I discovered this book that I was so much more relaxed about my condition. This book is up-to-date and tells the real facts about this disease. After reading this, my disease doesn't scare me anymore.
If you are a teen, like me, I suggest you read thid.
If you know anybody with CF, you should read this book or have them read this. Don't let them read those early books on CF with the grim facts...have them read this with the true and helpful facts.

This series is totaly to die for! Elizabeth and Jessica are to Califoinian teenagers who just want to have fun, well at least jessica does... Elizabeth and Jessica are two different people Jessica is a really outgoing kind of person who will get what ever she wants. Elizabeth is more of a quiet person who just goes along with what people are saying. In the begining of the series Jessica and Elizabeth get rezoned (moved) to a different school, they get transfered to sweet Valley Jr. High from Sweet Valley Middle School. Well then Elizabeth meets Salvador and they instantly have a "thing" for each other. While this is going on Elizabeth is having a really easy time making friends and jessica isn't. Then comes Blue later in the series who kind of messes things up..... in my opinion this is the best series of all of the SV books..... from SVJH to SHH to SHSY to SVMS SVU and sweet valley Kids i've read them all more than once! Happy Readings!

This was definitely one of the best SVJH books. In this one, Elizabeth really, really wants to go with Blue. But one day, Jessica asks Elizabeth to get her homework from her locker. Elizabeth goes to Jessica's locker, and finds Jessica's dorky locker partner there! When he asks Elizabeth to the dance, she is so nice, she can't bear to say no. Meanwhile, Blue is contemplating whether he should ask Elizabeth to the dance, and if so, when. Finally, Blue calls Elizabeth, but she concludes that she must tell the truth, and she tells Blue about her date. Blue is terribly sad, but then Elizabeth and Blue make up a plan that will fix everything...

Hey-I really dug Dead Meat. I've been around the youth gangs, and I was surprised how well Dale Alger handled the problem. It is an important book.

I don't usually review books, but Dead Meat is a fine exception, a story for young adults and parents who want to be greatly entertained, while at the same time getting to the root of gang culture. It is a wonderful story and a wonderful lesson.

I recommend this book to anyone in middle or high school and to parents of teens. The author has realistically described the choices faced by teens, particularly in our larger city schools. This story is well developed and has a well defined morality. I had to finish this well written book at one sitting. Thanks to the author, we can understand and help our children with some of these difficult choices.

If you want an uplift, a feeling that all is not lost, then the book to read is Dead Meat. How vividly I could see young Mitch timidly entering his new school for the first time and how passionately I could feel the struggles that he encounters in that situation. In today's uncertain world, this situation happens more than we can imagine. How can gang control be uplifting? The strain of good vs evil comes through loud and clear as young people grasp for any straw to maintain sanity and life in the real world, inching step-by-step into the unknown with false ideas about how far one young man can go. Good wins and clear heads prevail in a manner that we all hope can encapsulate this world. It is easy and fast reading, high interest and real life situations that face young people today.

Dead Meat is a stark description of the urban cultural challenges of adolescents who struggle to fit in and also meet parental expectations. It is bibliotherapy for youth that feel they are facing insurmountable problems. This story is a realistic, fresh picture of contemporary cultural challenges. Dead Meat clearly defines the elements of power and friendship, both idealistically and realistically. Adolescents are able to see that there are answers that go beyond submitting to gang power and violating parental trust. This book inspires courageous strength in the mean streets of youth.
