This book offers the principles needed for any Catia user, both experienced and new, to be able to obtain a firm understanding of Catia V5. It teaches through easy-to-follow examples and illustrations. It was well worth the money.

A good book is the one that doesn't require an engineer to understand. This book is excellent! It slowly guides a beginner step by step away from frustration and closer to satisfaction. However, the minus side is that it doesn't cover any electrical application. I would pay triple the price if this book had electrical coverage.

This book is a good introduction to Catia. The steps taken and the end result of the book is good and successfully takes you through the basic workbanches. However much of the book is waisted with repetition and over worded explinations for the simplest tasks. The illustrations, typography and loayout are typical home-word processor stuff (clearly an accademic project) after the first chapter the lengthy explinations take far to long to get through and you find yourself skipping them and just getting on with the task. At the end of the day there dont seem to be any other books out there so this is probably your best bet, but I was still left with a few basic problems that were not covered. This book could probably have been edited down to half its size if the wordy introductions were cut out and you would be able to get though it much quicker - after this work book you are left with both a need to learn all the workbenches covered in more depth and many many more workbenches to learn.

Sulky Sea Serpent

Alright, to be fair, he is only sulky for a moment. A wee sea serpent lands in a little girl's tub and asks if she will bring him back to the sea. But, it is raining and any girl knows that you do not go to the salty sea in the rain. As the days past and the sea serpent grows as "big as the ocean is deep and as long as the current is strong," their friendship also grows and grows.

The language is delicious and Catia Chien's illustrations send me to the moon and back. You must have a peek at this small, sweet treat.

"He sang me a song about the deep blue sea, where manta rays swim like dancing blankets..."

illustrations are fabulous

The story here is fun. A little girl discovers a sea serpent and the book follows her journey from raising it, to realizing she has to let it go, to the moment when they part. It's lovely and simple and sweet. Children really respond to the understated emotion of the text and the rhythm of the story. And the book's illustrations are spectacular. Catia Chien has such a unique style and such a sense of storytelling. Every page is bursting with energy, The underwater creatures (the sea serpent included) are full of imagination and whimsy. There are whales wearing bow ties, fish shaped like guitars and an octopus with a top hat. Every time I read this book I discover fantastical new creatures hiding in the depths. But my favorite page is a simple illustration of the girl and the sea serpent facing one another, alone beneath an arc of flying fish. The girl's arm reaches out, almost touching the serpent. The text reads: '"But what if I'm lonely?" my sea serpent asked.' It's a quite page, and the tone is subdued. Then the story picks up again, the whales in bow ties appear, and the girl and serpent finally part. The Sea Serpent and Me is truly a beautiful book from beginning to end and I highly recommend it for children and children at heart everywhere.

This is an absolutely wonderful book. It is a story about growing up, deep friendship and letting go. I read it to my 6 year old grandson and he and I were both completely delighted by the story. In fact, as the book came to its conclusion, my eyes welled up with tears.
The illustrations are enchanting and the writing is simply perfect....I recommend it to every child, every parent and certainly every grandparent.

Perfect for my daughter

I couldn't believe it when I found this book. My four year-old daughter has always been fascinated by sea serpents, and I was so pleased to find that it is a little GIRL who finds the sea serpent in her bathtub. Not that I mind having her constantly relate to boy characters when it comes to her fascination with stories about sea serpents and dragons and dinosaurs, but it is so refreshing to finally see one about a girl. The story is lovely, and the illustrations are just beautiful. And no pink! Yippee!

An Excellent CATIATutorial for Beginners
Helpful Votes: 8 out of 8 total.
Review Date: 2004-03-28
I bought this book because I wanted to learn CATIA and the reviews of Mr. Cozzens other books were high.

The title says "Releases 10 & 11". I used the book on CATIA Release 12 and it was exactly identical.

This book is actually a tutorial that guides people who have never used CATIA before. All the lessons are step-by-step instructions that show you how to draw a certain sketche or part. (Click on that icon, Select this and that option, etc...). In addition to that almost every step is accompanied by a black & white figure that shows everything, so there is very little confusion in the process.

There are examples at the end of each chapter that are good practice for the concepts learned in each chapter.

This book is not a reference book. CATIA is a huge program with tons of toolbars. Although he does describe each toolbar briefly, in his step-by-step instructions he uses only the most commonly used features, so don't think that you will be able to look up anything you want like in a reference book.

It is also not a flawless book. I did find a few errors here and there but they were not big and did not cause any major confusions. I was usually able to figure out what he was trying to do in a short time.

The bottom line is, If you don't know CATIA, get this book. It's an excellent starting point.

Review Date: 2007-06-12
I don't mean to come down too hard on this original and beautifully done collection of comics, but I have to admit to being disappointed. After reading the glowing reviews on Amazon, I thought I was really in for a treat. I dived into this volume as soon as it arrived on my doorstep only to find myself wondering what all the hoop-la was about. Many of the stories contained in this anthology (especially the 6-7 crammed into the middle) do very little to inspire, and in fact left me with a rather bitter feeling. Some of the stories led me to a bored feeling that had me thinking of better ways to spend my time.

While I can appreciate the beauty of simplicity and enjoy the rather abstract message presented by some of the contributors, I felt like a number of the stories here took those concepts too far. Stories of girls flying kites and crazily (unintelligible) pointless confusions of maps do very little to kick-start the imagination or capture the attention. IMHO, about half of these stories could have been left out for an overall more pleasant experience.

Either my expectations were simply too high for this volume, or I'm a dullard who cannot recognize artistic talent when I see it, but this book certainly did not blow me away. However, I did enjoy a number of the stories within. Particularly the first and last few. Beautiful artwork and simple but gripping stories can be found here, but you'll have to look for them amid a choir of blandness.

Because it has even more raving reviews than this one, I'll probably check out Flight Volume 2, but if it doesn't impress me more than this one did, it'll be my last.

This is a good reference manual for looking up how to do things that one might have forgotten or not yet learned. But it is not as good as David S. Kelly's CATIA for Design and Engineering for getting beginners up and running. Nevertheless, it gives much more information than Kelly's thin book, and is a good resource. It has at least two shortcomings. First, there are many errors in the text and even a few in the illustrations. Example: Chapter 9 is titled "Working with Wireframe and Surface Design Workbench" and you are told to start that workbench; but Chapter 9 actually deals with the "Generative Shape Design Workbench" (GSDW), and the icon shown on page 9-2 for creating circles is available only in the latter workbench. Further, the tool bar titled "Curves," shown on page 9-3, is available only in the Generative Shape Design Workbench. The tool bar pictured there must be from an earlier release because it has only two tools on it. Release 13 has three tools on it. (R15 added a fourth.) The whole of Chapter 9 deals with the GSDW, and not the Wireframe workbench, and the tools shown and described therein are generally not available in Wireframe. There are many more errors in the book. A second shortcoming is that it works exclusively in the metric system, ignoring the fact that over 90% of American engineering is performed in inches and pounds. Despite its shortcomings, the book is a useful reference. But Tickoo needs a competent editor.

Catia is not as easy to learn as some other programs and so it becomes more imrportnat for a book on this software to explain commands properly. This book has done it exceptionally well. I bought this book after trying to learn catia myself for few weeks. I could not learn it myself and so I started using this book. Within a few weeks of using this book, I have learnt a lot of commands and can now create most of the models in this book. I think it is a great thing to happen. I must thank the author of this book for providing such a great boook.

After years of searching, and being frustrated with Dassault training materials, Design Technology has finally broke the mold from traditional training manuals. These manuals are intuitive and easy to follow. I use them on a daily basis as a design reference guide. I wish I had these years ago! They are worth the investment and I'm encouraging my company to use them as a training resource.

I have reviewed this flipbook and find that it would be very helpful for the Catia user during and after the basic training. This book is direct on the "how too" needs as a quick reference.

As I have bought both the Solids and Surfacing books and reviewed both I did find that several of the general use tips where the same in each book. Still, the price seemed right for the info given and I look forward to the Advanced Surfacing book mentioned in the text.

Catia V5 Flipbook - Quick Reference

Review Date: 2007-04-04
Hello
I would like to share some information about myself and my Catia V5 Flipbooks.
I believe that my books can help people to get running quickly in Catia V5.
I have 28 yrs experience as a Catia Design Engineer and as a Tool maker.
In that 28 yrs I spent 10 of them teaching Catia and writing books for other companies.
Most of the people who are new to Catia V5 already know how to run a cad system, They just do not have the time to
read all of the text , They just need to know what buttons to press to get the job done.
Most of us are under a tight timing on a product and do not have the time to set idle while trying to figure out
which commands to use or read pages of directions to achieve the design.
My books are only 4" X 6" in size. This makes it easy to carry them with you.
Just look up the command in the glossary in the front of my Solids book or the Index located in the front of my Surface book
and flip to the command and follow the pictures, that's it.
I print them at home because I want them to have nice bold color and show a
quality product.
My Catia V5 flipbooks are a perfect compliment to any other Catia books out there.
They do make it easier to follow along in any Basic Catia class and will help you get up and running quickly
on V5. Or you can learn how to navigate through V5 on your own by just following my easy to follow pictures and directions.
I walk you through the commands required to start a file, create and modify parts and assemblies.
My Catia V5 Flipbooks may not have all the answers, But they will help in jumpstarting your journey through
Catia V5. I hope that you like them.
and remember, Training books are a tax write off : ) .

Sincerely

Tony Hughes
