I would have liked to review this book, but unfortunately Amazon twice sent me a defect book that did not have the CD.

Too many missing details
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2005-09-07
The content of this book is very disappointing. Too many details are missing. In many cases, the authors describe implementations without getting into the details of how they reached it. Because of these missing details, it is hard to understand the reasonning behind some of the trade-offs described in the book. It lacks clarity in several areas. Even with some experience in the area, I was left too many times trying to figure out what the authors meant.

Code is easy to understand

Book works well with other arithmetic books like Koren's. All the code is on a CD and its great to finally see an implementation that's easy to understand since its all written structurally.

Very disappointed with this book. The examples are few and the explanations stopped short. Not very helpful to new users.

Almost the same as the 2.0 release/version
Helpful Votes: 9 out of 9 total.

The contents of this book are almost the same as the previous version (2.0). The 4.0 release of the M.D. software have had lots of improvements and new tools that aren't reflected in the new version of the book.

The 4.0 release book has less information than the previous (2.0). One example is that NURBS Surfaces subject is not included in this new version (in the 2.0 it was). The exercises are the same, with the same sketches!

So, whatever you are a new or advanced M.D. user you might consider buying the 2.0 book version with the 3.0 update, it's less expensive and will be more helpful.

I was looking for along time for a book of this kind, but lalely i found this book in my friends library. i never thought that there will be a good book that will be able to describe so well the procedures and the steps for learning and understanding the logical order of Mechanical Desktop 4. in the book i found explenations and step by step notes about usage of Mechanical Desktop 4. this book has verry helpful index and is verry good as a hand book. thanks alot to Daniel T. The Successful CAD Manager's Handbook is an excellent book for the first time CAD Manager. It looks at all aspects of CAD, not only the popular AutoCAD, but also packages that you may never have heard of before. The author breaks down all of the most commonly thought of questions about CAD and CAD Mangement. If your firm is just starting the fact finding mission into purchasing a CAD system, get this book!

I started looking online for information regarding CAD Management, articles, books whatever I could find. During my search I came upon The Successful CAD Manager's Handbook by Ralph Grabowski, but after realizing it was about 5 years old I was hesitant to spend the money on it. I wrote the author and to my surprise he sent me a free signed copy. I found the text helpful but alot of it was outdated. I would really like to see an update because there is not much out there about CAD management.

The book is out-dated

When this book first came out, it was very useful in the classroom. However, through the years it was never updated and the price increased every year. I do not recommend to use this book for office or classroom use.

Waste of Time

This is a poorly written "guide", and it is a waste of time and money for anyone who really wants to understand MicroStation. It is incredible how weak this "guide" is; Evident after only a few pages is the fact that the author was merely slapping together a book for her students without much knowledge of the software application! If you have money to burn and time to waste while waiting for a REAL guide to MicroStation, then go ahead....otherwise skip this and just read the software's help files!

The book for someone want to know MicroStation

You can find most of the content of this book in help file of MicroStation. This book is extremely basic. It doesn't get any topic too deep. If you are looking for an solution, this book won't work. This book is for someone who learns MicroStation for fun.

Referentia... Best so far
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2000-04-16
This multimdia work, which is entirely on disk with no hardcopy backup, is an innovative and effective approach. I've been battling with self teaching the very unintuitive 3-D aspects of AutoCad for several years, and this tutorial actually made it possible for me to generate really fine 3-D furnituire drawings. That said, I gave it four stars instead of five simply because it didn't take some areas deep enough or far enough. Also, I couldn't get the "material rendering" and lighting aspects to work well following their instructions. They sort of worked, but not as advertised. The authors need to add more depth to this section. Several other of the more advanced tutorials need more work. Also, some of the learning curve of just using the tutorial could be eliminated by more and better instrutions about using the tutorial and it's buttons. Overall, pricey, but it's an approach that's long overdue and I've spent that much money on several 3-d books which were downright uninspiring and somehow all lacking in the same areas. This Referentia for Cad 3-d works best in conjuntion with a good encyclopedic style reference book.

Lab Manual on simulation
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2006-01-15
Most of the experiments are simple logic design such as decoder, AND, OR gates, which are implemented using schematics. Only a few experiments are based on VHDL. Therefore, you could almost ignore the CPLD in the book title, this book is more like digital electronics simulation using schematics capture, such as PSpice or Electronics Workbench. The only usage of CPLD in this book, is for the student to download and run the program. Anyway, since the experiments are pretty simple and straight forward, I think computer simulation alone would be sufficient.

This book is target at student in their first digital electronics course. Don't be fooled by the term 'CPLD' in the book title.

Don't waste your money

I bought this book thinking that you could actually learn something from the labs. I was actually disappointed. First of all, it uses an old version of what it is now known as Webpack 5.2i from Xilinx, or foundations. the examples are very bleek and take the assumption you took the lecture before you can perfom this lab.

It is obvious this book is geard towards a technical school rather than an engineering school. There is not much you can learn from this book other than learning a lesson on how to be careful next time when buying books.

Disapointed buyer

A good introduction to MapInfo Professional for Windows.
Helpful Votes: 30 out of 31 total.
Review Date: 1996-06-24
Given the dearth of any third party book dealing with the most widespread desktop GIS application, this book provides a good starting place as a tutorial. The MapInfo manuals, though fairly clear and concise, leave out some of the nuances for using MapInfo. Windows users will be pleased by the thorough treatment the windows platform receives in this book. Mac and UNIX users can still pick up some useful tidbits. The accompanying CD, while most of the items will work on all platforms, provides Windows tables and examples, without identifying which will work with or crash Mac or UNIX platforms. Only about 27 Mb of the CD was used, while about another 600 Mb was available, the authors should have included some of the other public domain tables and utilities available at MapInfo internet sites, and should have considered including the URLs either in the book, on the CD, or point to a well maintained net site where the links could be found. Overall, a very useful manual, with a lot of good information, and some nit picky problems.

Mr. Krol provides a good tutorial overview of OrCad Capture without losing the reader in the detail of the software. Only a few times did the steps outlined in the text not work on my version of Capture (ver 7.2).

This book is well worth the time.

I used this book to do some training at my office. I had hoped it would be a good book and it seemed like it had good potential but in the end I have to give it a poor rating.

The biggest complaint was that it was missing files for Chapters 3 and 5 that were needed to complete the exercise. We tried going to the publisher web site to see if the files were there as missing files are often placed there but found the publisher site to be difficult to navigate or find information. It took several attempts to even find the book on the site. We were unable to find any information about the missing files.

Additional complaints would be that after the first introductory chapter, much of the basics and most used features Revit were only loosely addressed. I would have preferred that there would have been more practice given inserting walls, doors, windows, etc. so that the user could get more practice with those basic functions. Objects such as stairs weren't covered until the very last chapter which I would argue that stairs should have been introduced sooner in the book.

I did like the effort to teach Worksets and other work sharing techniques however this was thrown out early in the book when I feel my users didn't yet have a good grasp of the basics.
