A good approach

There are not many books out there that can describe VHDL as good as this book does. I used this book as an introduction to Hardware logic in my EE classes and was always happy with the contents of the chapter. Although, some help was provided for the questions at the end of each chapter. In the advanced FPGA classes, this book provided a good reference whenever I forgot the basics.

Disappointing and Poorly Organized Text

Given the large number of VHDL books out there, this book comes up signficantly short. Although the title clearly implies this is a VHDL book, actual VHDL is not introduced until Chapter 11; the first ten chapters explain various digital design concepts. This type of instruction is better left to other sources. While the explanation of VHDL modeling is clear enough, the order in which concepts are explained are puzzling at best, and maddening at worst. The terribly incomplete index is also frustrating- it's not possible to look up VHDL constructs or keywords for syntax! My advice would be to explore other VHDL books- this one is best left alone.

just a rewrite of the manual

This is probably the worst technical book I have ever read. The author simply covers the commands of the software without any insight. There is a total lack of fluidity between the sections--each one seems to have been written by a different individual who doesn't care what was said before or will be covered later. Lots of boring repetition without purpose and very dry humor. If you still would like to buy one, BUY MINE.

THE best book on AutoCAD 3D

This is by far-and-away the best book I have read on the subject of AutoCAD 3D. The book was a joy to work through from beginning to end, covering so many aspects (many of which other authors neglect to cover), all of which add up to produce a first class book and subsequently a well rounded course - everything you need to confidently tackle 3D CAD.

BUY IT.

Confusing, skimpy, and VERY hard to relate to what you see on your monitor. This gets one star only because that's the least this reviewing system will let me bestow. Dummies books are usually great-but not this thing. Not recommended.

AutoCAD 2002 Complete was the perfect learning tool and continues to be instrumental in my new CAD career. The book taught this computer-savvy user (who is new to AutoCAD software) CAD concepts, AutoCAD 2002 features and function, as well as how to use any AutoCAD effectively.

My hats off to Autodesk and Authors Burchard, Pitzer and Liddle! Thank you for making my venture into CAD-based Civil Engineering a success.

I thought book will throw some light on new features of AutoCAD 2002. But, it contains few randomnly selected articles for AutoCAD 2000. If you have some previous publications for AutoCAD 2000 from Sybex, you need not buy this book. Because, this book speeks more about AutoCAD 2000 and speeks very less about new features of AutoCAD 2002.

Worst autoCAD book available

Review Date: 2004-03-13
This is the worst autoCAD book available.
I have been using autoCAD since Jan 1998, release 13, 14, 2000, 2002, including the building envelope details for a 21 storey high-rise.
The author assumes you know autoCAD(intermediate level ie. minimum two years experience) and teaches the material as if you are an architect with years of experience. The book is like an "old boys club book" meant to intimidate and keep the riftraft out.
It was the mandatory text for Architectural Engineering Technology. A waste of money and time.
If you want to learn autoCAD try Alan J Kalameja "The AutoCAD 2000 Tutor for Engineering Graphics" it will take you from novice to intermediate user, including 3D, with step by step instructions. This was the text required for Mechanical Engineering Technology. Worth every penny.
AutoCAD works for all professions, but you have to understand autoCAD before you can apply it to your profession. If you can draw a complex mechanical part you will have no problem drawing a house or building, and you will learn commands that will enhance your productivity in all professions.
Alan Jefferis book puts the cart before the horse, and the horse walked away.

It was a excellent book for my architecture class!!!

Not For Beginner (for reference I may say)
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2003-10-18
This book has more than 900 pages but it is not covered with any intermediate or advanced level of exercises. 99% of the exercises were already created by the authors and saved in the CD. The learner will be asked to open those excerises and finish the last step of each exercise. Man, how the heck the learners learn the Inventor without learning how sketch first (basic)? THIS BOOK IS NOT FOR BEGINNERS. It is for REFERENCE only. If you guys don't believe me, please try it and you will know exactly what I am talking. Money back guarantee!!!

State of the art.

Autodesk manuals are really giving then an unfair advantage over the competitions.
Who seems more interested to sell you expensive training by consultants.
It's not another big pictures no real info book. This one really trying to teach you the program.
And I can't find a better way to do it. And the print quality is sharp and crisp. And the CD is fully integrated in the program. Why can't all CAD manuals be like this?
Ok if you worked with Inventor for some years you might want something more like
" Inventor Advanced" or something. But this book goes long way.
It's really up to you to keep up and take time to practise were its complicated.
Thank you Autodesk for taking the learning books serious, it will pay off I'm assured of.

Not the book for me
Helpful Votes: 14 out of 14 total.
Review Date: 2007-04-24
I received a free instructor evaluation copy of this book. I was expecting more from an author who is an Authorized SolidWorks trainer. The book only addresses the basic fundamentals of SolidWorks, and reads mostly like the SolidWorks Help section which is provided free with the software. The Drawing section: No configurations, design tables, Custom Properties, Task Pane, Annotation Notes, etc. and Assembly sections: No SmartMates, very few standard Standard Mates, no Parent/Child relations, Smart Fastners, InContext, etc. are very weak with few and simple examples.

I do agree with a few reviewers on his 2006 book, which looks the same as his 2007 book. "Once a skill is covered in the book, the author assumes that the reader now knows how to do that task." This is not good in a classroom environment. At 200 pages, there is about 150 pages that provides information. This is not the book for me.

Beginners Guide to Solidworks 2007

Beginners beware!

This title will lead you to believe it is for beginners, but really it isn't. I had zero knowledge of Solidworks when I got this manual hoping it would give me a good start, but found myself scratching my head in every other operation.

Vital information is left out leaving the student on his own trying to find out how to activate functions in order to move forward. On average it took an hour or more to figure out operations that should take a few seconds, if the instructor would have given complete instructions.

Perhaps I understand the program better now, but it was extremely frustration trying to figure it out on my own, which is why I purchased the manual in the first place. All in all many, many hours of the student time are wasted because of a lack of good instruction. The instructor should evaluate his writing by letting students with NO experience in the program critique the book and its problems.

Unfortunately, the book is now obsolete. The software is now known as Orcad Capture, version 9.2, and Orcad Layout, version 9.2, there are little similarities between the current software and the processes described in the book.

A must-have for learning DataCAD

Review Date: 1998-12-16
This 1995 book covers DataCAD,(the number two architectural CAD software behind Auto***),up through version 6. At this writing DataCAD is up to ver.8.06 and is now a Windows 95 product instead of the DOS version the 1995 book covers. Although this book is being updated for the latest version of DataCAD, the 1995 book is still quite valuable, since the vast majority of the commands remain the same. This book will show you a lot of the shortcuts the DataCAD tutorial does not. The examples and lessons in the book are straightforward and very applicable to the actual work done in an architecural office. This book will have you up and running in no time. Of course, being productive quickly may also have to do with the fact that DataCAD is one of the easiest-to-learn architectural CAD programs in the marketplace; but that's another story. A definite "buy-it" book.

Review Date: 2006-10-14
There are many things left out of this book! Some examples that refer to files on the CD are not there, and some of those that are could not possibly be the correct ones. I am using this book for a class and I am constantly forced to look in other books to properly describe the information this book was supposed to cover. One error on the CD that was very upsetting was a practice test that did not have the correct answer for a question. Not very helpful! I've seen plenty of subpar books before, but this one takes the cake.

This book has potential of being a good resource if the problems are corrected in a revision, but in its current state of poorly written material, misleading examples, and awful review questions/exercises I strongly oppose the use of this book in colleges.

THOMSON or Standiford, if this book does get revised PLEASE use a more up-to-date version of AutoCAD to show examples. AutoCAD 2000 just doesn't cut it for a book released in 2005.

Best AutoCad book ever

The knowledge of the authors of this book unquestionably surpasses others. The wisdom and understanding that is displayed in this book goes far beyond any other I have seen. This book is manifestation that many years of experience played a fundamental role in the anthology of data. This is a must have book.
