This book was very well thought out . It is graphic, easy to understand, and the author does not talk down to the reader. His sketches and command lines were explained in full detail. The only thing this book lacks, is a hard cover...because of it's use, we have worn out the soft cover

This book is excellent, whether in comparison to others, or just by itself. The author clearly knows how to teach, he has laid the book out in exactly the way one should when teaching a very complex program to a beginner. He starts out explaining all the fuctions, the tools, and has you play with them. Then he moves on and builds his way up so you learn and understand.

I had previously tried to read the 3DS Max 2008 book by Foundation, and it was a horrible experience. It was filled with errors, was "paint by the numbers", did not explain to you why you were doing things, etc. I literally gave up.

I would urge anyone wanting to learn 3DS Max or Viz 2008 to buy and read this book by Jon McFarland instead, it is excellent.

Foundation for a Control Systems Engineer

I'm in the process of preparing to take the Principles and Practices Exam for Control Systems Engineering. I studied Electrical Engineering in college and have worked mostly with distributed/digital controls since then. I have performed little to no valve sizing or instrument selection.

I purchased this book to lay the foundation for the things I did not learn in school and have not practiced at work (instruments and valves).

This book is simple to read and provides the right amount of detail for teaching the Basics. I reviewed this book before taking an ISA CSE PE review course. Measurement and Control Basics provided enough knowledge so that I did not look completely clueless during the review course.

This book will not provide you with all the knowledge to prepare for the CSE PE exam, but it will get you started. I recommend reading this book, and then taking an ISA review course to identify other areas you need to study before the exam.

Finally, a Power Pack book. I had searched far and wide but I was not able to find a book that could serve my needs for Mechanical Desktop. Then I found this Power Pack book and it is great. It has a friendly format and it will definately come in handy for the next class that I have to teach.

The finest intro to Parametric Solid and Assembly Modeling
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2000-12-03
Having read a number of books on Parametric Solid and Assembly Modeling, I can say assuredly that this book, although a bit dated now (copyright in 1998), is still the best introduction to this subject. This is because the author, Steven K. Howell, actually explains the rationale for using the various commands to construct various solids and then to assemble them together to form the final assembly. Whereas other books just have you pretty much follow a cookbook approach to constructing parametric solids and assemblies thereof, this book is chock full of explanations. As an indication of how highly I value this book, I periodically visit Amazon.com and other on-line bookstores just hoping that Mr. Howell has written another book on the subject. And when I don't find a later book, I search the internet for any news of a later book. If I had to pick just one book for learning any version of Mechanical Desktop (yes, even Version 5), this would be it.

Microtransducer CAD by A. Nathan

This is a much needed graduate level book/monograph on the physical principles of sensors and how sensors can be modeled. Although the physical principles are introduced and discussed using senior-level mathematics (advanced calculus, vectors and matrices) all the chapters are easy to read and follow; and provide the reader with the necessary principles and models for research and development in transducers. There are hardly any typographical errors. The book will be extremely useful in academic and corporate research and development laboratories working on sensors/transducers. It is ideal for graduate courses on sensors in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering and physics departments. As a course textbook, the instructor will need to develop his own problem set as the book does not have questions or problems; though there are some examples in the book. As a graduate level course book it would score 4/5 due to a lack of end-of-chapter problems. There are numerous essential references for graduate students and engineers in this field and I found these references to be very helpful. What I like most about the book is that it has many tables of selected properties. For example, in Chapter 5 on Electrical and Thermal Properties, the authors provide several tables of properties, such as the Seebeck coefficient in semiconductors, Seebeck coefficient in metals, thermal conductivity of films etc. and they also carefully give the references from which the data were taken. I found these tables to be very useful for quickly checking on various physical properties of materials used in sensors. As a monograph, it is most highly recommended and it scores 5/5. All university and corporate research libraries should have a copy.
