A great book in the computer vision field.

Computer vision is becoming increasingly important in several industrial applications such as automated inspection, robotic manipulations and autonomous vehicle guidance. These tasks are performed in a 3D world and it is imperative to gather reliable information on the 3D structure of the scene. This book is about passive techniques for depth recovery, where the scene is illuminated only by natural light as opposed to active methods where a special lighting device is used for scene illumination. Passive methods have a wider range of applicability and also correspond to the way humans infer 3D structure from visual images.

A Rare Find

This book really is a rare find. It does not help that it has sort of a mis-leading title. It is not a drafting and design book. This book is full of gems of knowledge for anyone interested in specing-out manufacturing machinery. The book is full of pointers on how to run a project, explains common costing techniques, how to avoiding common pitfalls and the latter half of the book discusses the pros and cons of various motor drives, control systems, sensors, stepper motors versus servo motors.
It is rare to get all this information in one book. A quick overview that allows one to quickly grasp the basics and decide what is the proper mechanism for the "design". A very valuable book to obtain the basics of automated machinery. Very well written with good illustrations.

Good overview of ASIP design and design methodology

I am a hardware engineer in a fabless semicon company.
For our latest project, we had to implement a design unit
in a complex SoC. We implemented this unit as an ASIP using
a special purpose instruction set, which enabled us to support
various modes of operation by just changing the program code.
I think many hardware engineers have already used this concept
(many of them probably w/o even being aware, that they are
designing ASIPs).
The book of Glokler/Meyr gives a lot of theoretical background
for an ASIP project, starting from the datapath design for
signal processing and ending up with instruction issuing/encoding concepts.
Many of these concepts are covered in standard computer architecture books.
However, this book does not only focus on high level instruction
set definition, but also on the VLSI implementation of it and
on performance/power. It becomes obvious, that successful
ASIPs do not need to be very complicated, but still can be
energy efficient and computationally powerful.
What I liked most about this book is the fact that the
author does not tell you a lot of high level stuff. Instead, he
uses many examples and figures to illustrate possible design
alternatives.
In summary, this book has given me a lot of new ideas on what I
can do better in future ASIP projects!

The computer graphics world of today's movies has come a long way from the ubiquitous teapots of years past. The text only Adventure games are a long way from the Multi-User Dungeons (MUDs) of today. And the bridge of a modern ship is now a multi-media experience with radar, maps, engine controls, steering system, GPS and more are combined into displays and alarms to tell people to look at the displays.
These digital domains are what the authors call 'first encounters.' We see them; we understand them (more or less). But these are just the beginnings, and in this book twenty distinguished thinkers from Georgia Tech and Xerox PARC, Singapore and Oslo describe their thoughts on where the new innovations in digital domains are going.
This is a book for anyone interested in the digital future, perhaps as a computer scientist, perhaps as a movie maker or instrumenation designer, perhaps as an investor looking for tomorrows big play.

I first met the author, Roy Harkow, when I took his five day AutoLISP course. Since I found Roy to be an excellent instructor, I was one of the first to buy this book. This book did not disappoint me. It explains ALL the concepts and features of AutoLISP extremely well, including the eval function. After reading this book, I have been able to write several AutoLISP functions and commands easily. And the best part is that I understood before programming what I was doing instead of programming by trial and error. I recommend this book very strongly. If you want to understand AutoLISP and become an expert in it, this is the book for you. Not only does the book provide the reader with a deep understanding of the underlying concepts, it also has numerous examples and exercises after each chapter that progress gradually in level of difficulty. I know, because I have done all the exercises in this book. The author's solutions, of course, are also handily available on a diskette. This book will allow the reader to bootstrap himself or herself into an AutoLISP expert, and enjoy programming in AutoLISP!

Excellent Book on Genetic Programming and Design

Genetic Design / Optimization is an exciting field. The increasing power of desktop computers are opening up applications in design optimization that heretofore were difficult to solve or optimize.
As a registered professional engineer, I feel comfortable stamping designs derived via evolutionary computation since they must satisfy the physics of the problem in order to be feasible.
I found this book prepares both the practitioner and researcher for this field. The book comes with a CD that contains many web addresses and source code to various application programs which is very valuable resource and time saver.
This is an excellent resource in Genetic Algorithms and Design. I recommend this book highly.
