The pros and cons of being an expatriate
Helpful Votes: 70 out of 73 total.
Review Date: 1999-07-26
I would highly recommend this book to anyone considering taking an assignment with a US-based country outside of the USA. I was assigned as an expatriate for 3 years in Germany. I wish I had read this boook. Maybe I could have minimized some of the culture shock especially for my family.

Chapters 1 and 2 provide excellent food for thought when deciding whether to accept the position. There are many pros and also many cons. Chapters 3 thru 11 provide outstanding recommendations for solutions to many of challenges of living in another culture.

Chapter 12 should be read before taking an overseas assignment as well as when nearing the end of assignment. Returning to the USA, especially professionally, is not easy. This chapter has some good advice on networking while assigned overseas.

Chapter 13 and 14 are also essential reading before accepting an assignment.

The investment in purchasing the book is sound. It will pay for itself many times over!

Truly the "Ultimate" Job Search
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.

I had already owned The Five-Minute Interview, also written by Beatty. I got that book because my brother-in-law swears by it - he's now a $100,000+ executive at top company...etc.

Using the techniques in this book, I have:

- researched several job lead sources that I didn't know about before
- crafted a powerful resume (by "powerful", I mean that my interviews have increased from one per month to eight per month) that gets noticed.
- gotten very positive results in interviews "hey, if [the job you're interviewing here for] doesn't work out, MAKE SURE you contact me for opportunities in our IT department that pay more, are more interesting, blah blah...

Hopefully, my job search will end very shortly. At very least, it is more fun with Beatty's game plan.

This was a great book. I read it when I was 19, and it was a refreshing change from all the legal-ese stuff I'd been finding in my research. It's very adaptable to whatever your business idea may be, and I highly recommend it to anyone with even a curiosity about starting a business. This book is useful if you're just kicking a dream around in your head, or if you're ready to register your business name and get rolling. A great choice!

Affirmative Action

An excellent review of background for Affirmative Action (AA) programs and issues. It also discusses many contemporary issues surrounding AA and brings in court cases that are relevant.

My students who were against AA to start with thought the book was biased in favor of AA. What could I say? I did ask them what a book about this subject that was more "Fair and Balanced" or a book that was against AA would look like. About all they could bring up is that AA is biased against white people. Maybe it is,somewhat, but I agree with the argument that any bias embedded in AA is intended to make up for eons of bias that closed many professional and even ordinary work fields and educational opportunities to blacks.

The book has some real valuable information about the various visas and how to go about obtaining one. It also covers cases where one needs to switch visa status. The topics are well divided into chapters and the book is written clearly with great case studies. (It is also available in Hebrew).

I believe this book is one of the best reading materials for anyone who wishes to legally stay in the USA, for whichever purpose. It is highly recommended, even if you have an attorney or about to get one.

Economics As If People Mattered
Helpful Votes: 9 out of 9 total.
Review Date: 2006-02-17
I am a college instructor who teaches a sociology course of social stratification. This is a very unusual text in that it compares neo-classical economics to the political economy tradition by showing in very practical ways how each tradition gives different explanations of why there is economic inequality in wages, unemployment, and job distribution between whites, blacks and women. The text is easy to read and very evenhanded in how it treats both theories. There are excellent discussion questions at the end of each chapter and a rich bibliography. The book is relatively brief so it could either stand alone or be supplemented by another text. A very well put together text.

The Title Says it All

The authors, who have been successful school administrators in a variety of positions, offer sound advice in their book that can help other women enter, succeed, and then advance to the highest positions in school administration. There are many specific "do's and don'ts," and anecdotal examples to illustrate what to emulate and what to avoid to reach their goals. Male administrators in high positions and school board members will also be helped by this book as to why it is in the best interest of the school district and the students to encourage women to enter and advance in school administration. Advice offered for upward bound women is also sound advice for male aspirants.
