A new approach to policy formation

Amy Mazur contributes the first feminist perspective on the policy formation process, a field dominated by traditional male theorists who take gender for granted. Political science is changing as new gender, ethnic, and other social groups are being accounted for in theories that never considered the human factor. This departure from traditional political science adds to our understanding of why governments do what they do and how that affects the citizens it governs. Mazur creates a framework for evaluating how governments have progressed with women's concerns, since the second wave feminist movement made these concerns mainstream. This book is mainly academic, serving political science and women's studies. As a grad student in this field, Mazur's book was enormously helpful to me. It would be helpful for undergrads and non-academic policy wonks as well, because she only spends the first couple of chapters laying out the theory, and the rest of the book looking at practical examples in different sectors of women's issues (reproductive rights, employment law, political representation, etc.) The caveat is that this theory has only been applied and created with western, developed countries in mind. Whether this theory can be applied to lesser developed countries and the Global South still needs to be examined. But its a start in the right direction, and political science definitely needs more contributions from female theorists, so it will be interesting to see how influential this book will be.

Although it is not perfect, Hunter provides an engrossing look at southern black women's labor (especially in Atlanta) from the end of the Civil War to the Great Migration. With emancipation, these women searched for identity as free women, as paid workers, and as African Americans. White woutherners developed institutions and laws to restrict the newfound freedom black southerners sought to enjoy. Black women workers responded through community awareness and activism, showing intelligence and the desire to better their lives. Hunter's innovative use of sources shapes her work and helps the women's voices come alive. Because of limited African-Americal literacy in the early Reconstruction period, Hunter turned to newspapers and white southners' diaries fo flesh-out black women's experiences. Although problematic, the attention given in them to black women domestics demonstrated the division of both race and gender. Hunter also incorporates unique sources like dance steps so show the many ways newly freed women sought to define themselves. Her haunting use of illustrations reinforces the oppression and struggle for freedom black women laborers faced. As someone who knew very little about this aspect of history, Hunter's work has developed my interest in this time.

The Recovery of Unions

This book is extremely timely. It addresses central issues facing trade unions at the workplace, taking a contrast between manufacturing, privatised utilities and the public services. It opens up key debates about the future of unions in major capitalist countries. The author insists that any understanding of trade unionism today must take the workplace as a starting place. It is here workers experience the contradictions of international restructuring and local imperatives. The book raises these issues in a sharp and focused way and should be read by commentators and trade unionsists around the world.

It is a good book. I wish I have read the book six years earlier (before I enrolled in a PhD program). This book confirms everything I have observed in this field. It should be a required reading for everyone who is thinking about to pursue a career in science.

This is the only book written to date about the important story of Silme Domingo and Gene Viernes. Though this book gives a fictionalized account of their story, it will give you a notion of what their story is about. Their story and the story of the struggle to uncover the truth of what happened to them is one of dedication to justice.

The pros and cons of being an expatriate

I would highly recommend this book to anyone considering taking an assignment with a US-based country outside of the USA. I was assigned as an expatriate for 3 years in Germany. I wish I had read this boook. Maybe I could have minimized some of the culture shock especially for my family.
Chapters 1 and 2 provide excellent food for thought when deciding whether to accept the position. There are many pros and also many cons. Chapters 3 thru 11 provide outstanding recommendations for solutions to many of challenges of living in another culture.
Chapter 12 should be read before taking an overseas assignment as well as when nearing the end of assignment. Returning to the USA, especially professionally, is not easy. This chapter has some good advice on networking while assigned overseas.
Chapter 13 and 14 are also essential reading before accepting an assignment.
The investment in purchasing the book is sound. It will pay for itself many times over!

I had already owned The Five-Minute Interview, also written by Beatty. I got that book because my brother-in-law swears by it - he's now a $100,000+ executive at top company...etc.
Using the techniques in this book, I have:
- researched several job lead sources that I didn't know about before
- crafted a powerful resume (by "powerful", I mean that my interviews have increased from one per month to eight per month) that gets noticed.
- gotten very positive results in interviews "hey, if [the job you're interviewing here for] doesn't work out, MAKE SURE you contact me for opportunities in our IT department that pay more, are more interesting, blah blah...
Hopefully, my job search will end very shortly. At very least, it is more fun with Beatty's game plan.

This was a great book. I read it when I was 19, and it was a refreshing change from all the legal-ese stuff I'd been finding in my research. It's very adaptable to whatever your business idea may be, and I highly recommend it to anyone with even a curiosity about starting a business. This book is useful if you're just kicking a dream around in your head, or if you're ready to register your business name and get rolling. A great choice!
