Absorbing history of an art and a business

Review Date: 2003-02-23
James Kraft, a historian at the University of Hawaii/Manoa, tackles a huge but underexplored topic: the impact of the major technological innovations of the early twentieth century on the livelihood of the performing musicians. For those interested in the lives of musical stars, whether in the classical or popular fields, this book will be disappointing. Kraft regards music-making as very much a business: this is a history of the struggles of organized labor, in the form of the American Federation of Musicians, to maintain job security and incomes for their rank-and-file members in the face of two revolutions that changed the business of supplying music to the masses forever. The first was the advent of sound movies, which in a very few years wiped out the livelihoods of thousands upon thousands of musicians who had performed live music for showings of silent films in moviehouses across the nation. The second was radio, which quickly proved a boon for the sound recording industry, further eroding the need for live performers.

STAGE TO STUDIO is an absorbing and carefully researched chronicle. As a performing musician I emerged from reading it more aware of just why it is that it is so difficult to make a living as a musician now, at the beginning of the twenty-first century, and grateful to Petrillo and other major players in the AFM who, against all odds, struggled to preserve work and benefits for the beleaguered members of their union.

Home-Based Business

This book gives you a realistic look at what it is like to own a home-based business. I read this book along with another book from the Self-Counsel Press business series: "S&R a Profitable Business Using Your Computer." I found "S&R a Profitable Home-Based Business" was more current than the other book but they both had valuable information to offer.

"Home-Based Business" emphasizes the three legs of business: marketing, administration, and finance. This book has great worksheets to use, such as, the one about finding your target customer. Managing your time is an important chapter to read for anyone considering working at home--if you have a hectic household like I do, you will appreciate the information offered in this chapter! And even if you don't have a hectic household that you are trying to run a business out of, this book will help you get your home-based business started.

The State and Women in the Economy
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2007-05-13
This book examines the effect of state policies on women's roles in the economy. At the most concrete level it investigates the relative lack of response of women's labor force activity rates to export-led development in the Republic of Ireland. At a broader level, it provides critical insights into current labor market debates regarding the causes of women's subordination and the efficacy of state policies designed to alleviate them.

The book shows how the state, in addition to and interactively with the workplace and household, can maintain gender inequality. In doing so, Pyle demonstrates the usefiulness of a revitalized and broader structural approach to feminist analysis.

"The topic, the constraints on labor force participation of women in Ireland, is significant in itself because Ireland departs so startingly from experiences of women in the countries undergoing similar economic growth. The topic is also central to our overall understanding of the conditions which influence women's paid labor. The author contrasts her analysis with neoclassical economic literature, with conventional Marxist explanations, and also with feminist theories about the means by which Women's subordination is perpetuated." - Susan Lehrer

For those who have to be concerned about workplace safety issues, this is really a very handy book. Well-written in a very user-friendly format, the amount of information in this book is enormous. We get the new one every year, and it's just a darn useful, very practical tool, at least it always has been for this company. You may have to order it directly to get the latest version, since the 2004 edition isn't on Amazon yet for some reason.

This book helped me pass statistics!
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2003-12-23
I dreaded taking statistics because I have been out of school for awhile and I was never very good at math. The textbook we used in the course was too hard for me. I found books that teach you how to do stats problems and other books that deal with issues in reading charts and understanding statistical fallacies. But until I found Statistics for Nonstatisticians I hadn't seen anything that explained my course material in an understandable way. Statistics for Nonstatisticians explains basic statistical concepts without fancy language. Thanks to this book, I actually got the intuition behind a lot of the statistical analysis. With that everything else fell into place. The chapters are Descriptive Statistics, Population Statistics and Probabilty Distributions, Hypothesis Testing: Theory, Hypothesis Testing: Applications, Correlation and Regression Analysis. The only thing I didn't like was that many of the examples were about employment or employment discrimination (because the book was based on a course the author taught to people interested in that subject).

A warning for human resources directors at all companies!
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 1999-10-30
There are usually two sides to every story. However, as a labor and employment lawyer who represents management, it is difficult for me to see how an investigation into the fact pattern presented by Mr. Martin could have resulted in anything short of an apology and compensation for the egregious conduct of his supervisors and certain co-workers. Of course, when the US Supreme Court opened the door for some clear guidance on same-sex sexual harassment, the victory for Mr. Martin was all but assured. Nonetheless, the book's riveting account of Mr. Martin's courage to stand up to the system, prior to the precedent impact of the Supreme Court's decision, is a reminder to us all that right is right and wrong is simply wrong!

I would encourage corporate America to read and digest the issues which Mr. Martin raises, not only in the isolated same-sex harassment arena, but for an education into the mindset of a tenacious plaintiff who is willing to risk all for the sake of a belief that he was wronged by a company and organization to which he gave his all, and most of a career. This book, then, is a warning and an education for human resources directors at all companies. Such a story of harm and betrayal at the hands of a man's employer may encourage others similarly situated to fight, but if the proper lessons are learned, Mr. Martin's narrative may do well to prevent such from happening!

Sincerely,

James H. Stock, Jr.
