Mental Health is only Emotional Health

Review Date: 2004-09-09
Review Date: 2004-09-09
While we consider this little, the reality is that among the types of health, physical, economic, intellectual, and emotional or psychological, mental health is actually little more than psychological and emotional health. Where men deny their emotions, therefore, it is often conclusory that women are the ones upon whom mental health has been focused, leaving men once again in the desert of health issues. Where women regularly evoke their emotional needs, men seldom do, and society places numerous substitutes to deter, or defer, the issues that come automatically from being human, as if men were robots. Since men spend so much of their lives at work, this necessarily invokes the issues of healthful working environments that properly and appropriately honor the emotional lives of men, and do not treat them as robotic. Astute lawyers will begin to increasingly define the importance of mental health in work and employment issues as they have been forced to do for women (coming into the workplace with all of their emotional clothing). Having long denied males the same privilege, the integration of men and women in the workplace has the potential to overload the human resources department responsible for insuring the collateral issues that confront employees to insure productivity for the employer, and contented employees. Far from being "girlie men," the normal acceptance of human qualties is long overdue for men, and any company of social responsibility will jump at the chance to prove its image of "valuable work climates" for both men and women. This blossoming field of context in connection with both home and work environments, and the nexus of child raising must necessarily become the next giant step for corporations to address their corporate climate as worthy employers. Far from the hierarchial vision of the industrial complex, the 21st Century workplace that incorporates both men and women in positions of responsibility is advised to insure both physical health and mental health for its employees, as well as trying to handle the enormous task of diversity issue that have become one test of humanitarian excellence in a world increasingly complex and interdependent. For companies who ignore this vast area of health issues, they will continue to become the lumbering dinosaurs they must be in an integrated gender world where master/servant relationships and law have ignored the importance of human emotions as mental health. Correctly defining the existence of the whole human being was bound to come sooner or later.

I've been hunting for a job for just a few weeks now, and this book has really helped my attitude and methodology immensely.
The author puts together an interesting breakdown of job hunter personality types, and has some suggestions on how to approach interviews given the innate personalities of the interviewer and interviewee.
There is an excellent section which gives ideas for answers to some very typical and tough interview questions.
Priced at $0.49 this book is an absolute steal.
I'd also recommend the Five O'Clock Club's _Interviewing and Salary Negotiation_...

I really enjoyed this book. I recommend it highly. I spent 1984-85 in South Africa when the policy of "Apartheid" was the law. Races were heavily discriminated against, and some ended up as human slaves. Later, in 1998, I witnessed this again, but this time in a United States Commonwealth. The book, Modern Slavery and the Global Economy, identifies the horrific realities of Modern Slavery through first-person accounts. It also gives insight to the growing global economy and a possible connection. Well worth reading.

Libby Gleeson wrote this book because she found that children knew what Dad did when he went to work, but not what Mom did when she dropped them off at the creche or children's preschool.
Libby decided to use real Moms. Not every Mom is a career minded professional. She tried to use a "typical" Mom.
As the illustrator, I came across this brief which had lain dormant for a while for want of some way to get across the series of basically statements of what Mom did. The worked ended up a wonderful collaboration of both the author and illustrator, and as well as the Editor, Donna Rawlins. The book took around six months to illustrate, and is rendered in a mixture of mediums, from colored pencil to water color, as well as water color pencils.
The layout of the book goes through a day in the life of both Mom and child. There are rest spots for the reader to relax and take in some detail. There are loads of children in the illustrations, and plenty for young ones to sit on their own and absorb the detail.
When I illustrate I try to capture "action" so that you feel the energy that the activities generate.
I rated this book five stars but its up to the reader obviously to decide. But I'd be stupid to tell you I rate it four or less wouldn't I? Let's face it. I'm as vain as the next one and besides, My MOM says it's five star!

I picked this book up at my local bookstore the other day. I have been very frustrated with the lack of books that address the challenges of moonlighting. Most books that deal with home- based business assume that you will be working full- time, not doing side work to supplement your income from a primary job. For me, this book has been a valuable resource that speaks to my need to hold on to my full time job while branching out and starting another business (that hopefully will become my full- time job).
My impressions about the book, taken part by part:
Part One: Selecting the Right Business
This section (in particular, chapter 2) can be skimmed over if you already have a type of business already in mind. Having said that, I am going into freelance writing, and I was VERY thrilled to see that Jo- Frohbieter- Mueller addressed this career in her book. Her advice on promoting your work as a writer gave me some additional information that I haven't even read in other books on freelancing. And her advice on visually mapping out how many hours of each day in the week you'll want to devote to your moonlighting work was helpful.
Part Two: Now is the Time To Ask Questions.
This is a short section, and for readers with little knowledge of partnerships, sole proprietorships, or S corporations, this will give a good overview of what the different types of organizations for businesses. I especially found Chapter 5 "Determine Goals and Write a Business Plan" to be helpful in organizing my business and putting it down on paper.
Part 3: Money Matters
This section leads you through the ways to establish credit for yourself and your potential clients. Chapter 7, "Pricing for Profit" provided me with a good formula to determine how much to charge my clients.
Part 4: Getting Started
Mueller provides a checklist for the typical workspace and equipment needed for home businesses. I found her suggestions on getting an 800 number to be helpful. Chapter 11, "Simple Bookkeeping Procedures" has invaluable advice, but I wish it were longer.
Part 5: Getting and Keeping Customers
This section of the book was most helpful to me. In this section, I got advice from Mueller that I haven't gotten from other sources. I'm embarrassed to admit that I didn't even think of joining my local Chamber of Commerce until reading this book! I also got valuable advice on advertising via print, TV and radio ads. This section is where the book is most dated, however. Mueller, writing at the beginning of the e-mail era, briefly touches on the usefulness of e-mail and gives no advice on the value of running your own website. And with the recent anti- spam laws, readers should be careful to "cold call" via e-mail and be seen as spam messages.
I really wish the publisher would provide an updated edition of this book, one that incorporates the usefulness of the Internet as a marketing tool. If anything, this omission is the only weakness in the book. A simple updated version would clear up this problem.
Part 6: Tending to Taxes, Insurance, and Benefits
I've found the advice that Mueller gives here to be sound and in line with anything else I've learned in dealing with the IRS and deductions for home- based businesses. Of course, readers should be sure to check up on the latest IRS laws concerning taxes and follow them.
Part 7: Taking Control of Your Life and Business
This final section offers tips on maintaining a healthy balance between your primary job, home, family and friends. It is short and easily read through. The Appendix that follows offers about 500 occupations that can be developed into home businesses (especially good for the undecided) and short bibliographies for readers wanting to know more about each occupation.
Overall, I think that this is a wonderful guide to anyone who is considering a move to moonlighting to supplement income or change jobs. My only criticism is that the book is dated without information that addresses the Internet and its importance in self- promotion.

This is a very good book because it eschews the 'medical' model of rehabilitative services job placement in favor of a holistic approach.
The book argues that jobs for people with disabilities should NOT be conceptualized as busywork, and makes the case that we also have the right to a career. A minimum wage job at a fast food restaurant is not going to work for somebody who already knows that they are capable of doing so much more.
Because a career is something with growth and opportunities for advancement (including authority and a larger paycheck) it is critical for breaking people with disabilities out of the 'children' stereotype.
I also liked the fact that it did acknowledge building a support network was necessary. Public schools are ideally involved in the transition, but when they cannot (or will not) recognize the independence of the job seeker/career person, making and asking supportive friends for that extra help is also important.

Motherguilt is superbly written and informative. It provides an excellent analysis of the blame and scapegoating that mothers are facing in our society. It is a must-read for anyone interested in women's studies, motherhood or in a deeper analysis of our present day problems.

For those of us without formal economics training, Card and Krueger present an easy-to-read alternative view of the minimum wage controvery. They undermine powerfully the long held assumption that minimum wages decrease job opportunities for low wage workers, and elegantly descibe what poor workers have known for years.
