The Hobo Philosopher

This book is exactly what I thought it was. It is a concise synopsis of labor laws in the U.S. I wanted such a guide to help in my research on this subject. My first disappointment was that it didn't go back into the Colonial period but as I think about it that would be a whole other book entirely. This book deals with the actual laws that were made and describes them briefly. It is a good reference book and that is what I wanted.

Readable--fun--pathbreaking
Helpful Votes: 6 out of 7 total.

Enstad takes U.S. women's history in important new directions because she understands how young working-class women created their own class-conscious identity in terms made available by consumer culture. In this context hats, shoes and pulp-fiction gave working-class women fun, spunky ways to of asserting themselves and their interests. Alas, at the time, neither male union activists nor middle-class women allies understood these young girls' politics, and the union movement suffered for its misunderstanding. But Enstad understands these girls perfectly. In Enstad's analysis movies and fashion become political--as they in fact were. And thanks to her explanation I finally understand why my feisty Jewish grandmothers insisted on calling themselves and their friends "ladies." A must-read for anybody who loves the new women's history.

This is a great book for anyone in college, getting ready for college, (or getting ready to send kids to college). Outlines how to be proactive and make the experience work to the max. Sensible and inspiring. I got copies for two young friends that I care about because I want them to think outside the box and make the college expereince all that it can be.

Lawyers and Laypeople Will Learn from this Book
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2008-01-07
If you want to know the legal decisions, regulations, and laws related to a specific issue touched by learning disabilities, higher education and employment, read this book. Or search for the matter that concerns you in the Table of Contents. This book starts with the basic constitutional principles of the Commerce Clause, the Spending Cluase and Fourteenth Ammendment. The laws that are specific to civil rights and disability are then discussed.

Summaries of specific cases are included for key topics. A person with a learning disability can compare their situation with the cases. Attorneys can use the book to start their research. For example, there is a section about disclosure in the employment section. To illustrate that a person must tell someone in "decision making group" that they have a disability, the book describes a case where a person with mild mental retardation was fired. She marked down a VCR, then bought it herself. She told her coworkers about her disability, but not people in the "decision-making group." The court said she was fired properly. Similarly an employee with manic depression who told her sister she was "falling apart" was not covered.

This book fills a major gap in the field of learning disabilitieswhich has many books on special education in the K-12 years. But this is the only one that covers the legal issues of adults. The field is fortunate that it is such a good one.
