After reading this book, and thinking about my future career plans, I have one phrase for anyone of college graduate age: Without this knowledge, your future may be in jeopardy. This book gives you an insight into the hiring process that many of us students and graduates probably are unaware. Thank you so much for letting this information out

Hiring is never as simple as it seems. There is a lot involved in the process. It starts with the development of the job description and continues through the job offer being made and accepted or declined. The process is explained in a flow chart in this book, accompanied by text that details each step.

The hiring process need to be managed. That management task is accomplished through the use of a series of forms to be completed by participants in the process. With all laws governing employment, using the right forms (avoiding the wrong forms!) is essential.

The forms you need are all included in this book. They're ready for you to photocopy and put them to use. While the author recommends you clear use of the forms with your company's legal counsel, just to be extra safe and secure, the originals are all ready to copy from the CD -ROM that accompanies the book.

Fyock, a nationally-respected authority on hiring, has developed a very valuable tool in the Hiring Source Book. She starts by examining the hiring process (chapter 1). This information is helpful for the experienced human resources professional, as well as for management people (read: small companies without an HR department) who engage in hiring new employees. Her next chapter addresses the actual design of employment applications and how these tools fit into the process. The next chapters on interviewing and evaluating applications provide a broad range of advice and instruction that will build the confidence of even the most experienced hiring authority.

Hiring involves more than just looking at applications that may come in. Chapter 8 is filled with techniques that will strengthen the process...and your results. Stay out of trouble by following the legal rules around hiring. They're explained in a way we can actually understand! And, since the composition of our workforce is changing in the United States, the chapter on hiring Hispanic employees makes this book particularly timely.

Highly Recommended. If you hire well, employee retention becomes a lot easier! As author of "Keeping Good People," I've seen that many retention problems arise just because the hiring wasn't done correctly. Read and use this book and save yourself a lot of grief...and money.

This text provides understandable and detailed information through out every chapter that is practical and informative. As a HR major, this is one book I will not be selling back at the end of the term, but keeping on my shelf for my future career.

The reality of the abuse of the ADA by our Federal Circuit Courts as it pertains to persons with documented grave mental conditions is finally brought to light in this well-written book by Susan Stefan. To think that a mentally ill worker has to prove that he is disabled (severely) but can do the job with little or no accommodations and is totally mitigated by medications to the point of being non-disabled is absolute foolishness by the current Federal Circuits. They claim to be under the responsibility of judging litigation on a case by case basis, yet have continued to make qualified mentally ill workers dance on prongs so small that Tinkerbell would surely fall! Ms Stefan SHOWS the disparity demonstrated by the Circuit Courts when dealing with mental disabilities and highlights the absolute redundancies in case law when dealing with bipolar illness or any other mental disability. The 5TH Circuit will soon get a case that they will be FORCED to be just...fair and equal under our laws...as my personal situation exceeds their favorite word "egregious". Let's all hope that the spirit of the ADA does not get trashed in political correctness and absurd logic...and the 5TH Circuit shows guts in recognizing the obvious fact that mental illness is equal to physical illness in disabling an individual in the work place. That the mentally ill need not be forced to endure harassment and disparate treatment at the workplace and employers are given a clear mandate to treat the mentally ill fairly and equally at the workplace. Good book for people who are unhappy in current job and or wanting change to make things better at work for themselves.

I initially borrowed this book from my public library to make sure it lived up to its description. Cheri Fuller has done a great job by using case studies, advice from successful homebased business people, and it has steered me in my homebased career.

Susan M. Hartmann describes and analyzes the effects of World War II on American women's lives in The Home Front and Beyond: American Women in the 1940s. The work focuses primarily on women's public lives, stressing Hartmann's belief that "women's movement into the public realm represents the most substantial change of the 1940s." Addressing women according to race, and to a lesser extent, according to age, class, educational and marital status, Hartmann adds a new dimension to the historiography of American women and World War II-- a historiography traditionally characterized by across-the-board generalizations molded around the experiences of white, middle-class women. Although her larger argument and conclusion speaks to women as a whole, she asserts and demonstrates that the effects of World War II upon American women were not uniform. Through careful examination of women's involvement in many aspects of public life during World War II, Hartmann shows that social, economic, and political changes put into motion by World War II affected the lives of American women by restructuring gender roles in American society. However, Hartmann asserts that this was merely a temporary reorganization of gender roles, not a permanent redefinition. Women's acceptance into nontraditional roles was limited to the duration of the war, after which they were expected to return to pre-war lifestyles. In keeping with the existing arguments of other prominent women's historians, Hartmann maintains that by stressing women's importance to the war effort, while simultaneously preparing them for eventual return to traditional female arenas, employers, the federal government, and popular culture media successfully achieved temporary gender reorganization. This reorganization got women out of the house and into the workforce as a wartime necessity, but ultimately ensured the short-term status of women's new roles and opportunities. Hartmann begins with a brief chapter detailing the developments in American social, economic, and political life throughout the 1940s. Her concise discussion of the Depression, New Deal efforts, foreign policy, and the outbreak of war, places women's experiences into historical context. The second chapter details the "historical subordination of women and the division of labor according to sex," highlighting women's status in society as wives and mothers at the start of the 1940s. In the chapters that follow, Hartmann examines women's experiences in the military services, female employment patterns, the treatment of women by the government and employers, women's involvement in and treatment by labor unions, female educational accomplishments, legal status, and direct participation in the political arena, and notions of family and womanhood within popular culture. Hartmann writes that that World War II increased and varied women's participation in public life. As more men joined the military, women's services became of crucial importance to keep the country running. Women were called upon to serve the government in all types of wartime activities. Factory jobs opened to women, women's divisions of the military services were created, labor unions such as the American Federation of Labor (AFL) opened full admission to women and held conferences to address issues concerning female workers, educational institutions recruited women in the fields of science and technology, women were called upon for jury duty, and women's political activity as party workers and office-holders rapidly expanded. However Hartmann argues that, from the start, these opportunities for women were destined to be temporary, and designed to work without changing entrenched gender roles. Breaks in the traditional system opened to women out of necessity, but government and media propaganda aimed to recruit women "for the duration" and no longer. Mass media propaganda such as movies, posters, and radio jingles (government or otherwise) stressed that "women workers should be proud of their contributions to the war effort, but eager to return home and gladly relinquish their jobs to returning soldiers." Propaganda "feminized" wartime work to ensure that women retained the proper notions of womanhood while they performed masculine jobs. Propaganda also emphasized women's participation in the war effort as a way to bring home their men and help make the world safe for children. This method of recruitment opened doors for women, but also made their newfound positions conditional. Women got jobs in factories, but under the popular assumption that they would give them up and return home after the war. Women were admitted for military service, and although some gained full military status, other groups such as the Women's AirForce Service Pilots, were denied military commissions because their service was deemed necessary only during the war. Women in labor unions such as the AFL were granted full membership only for the length of the war, and others, as in the case of the Teamsters, were admitted only after signing a paper authorizing the union to dismiss them "whenever in their (the union's) judgment the emergency ceases." Although Hartmann demonstrates that the effects of World War II on women's public lives resulted in a temporary reorganization of gender roles, not a redefinition, she concludes that the result "does not cancel out the importance of World War II in altering sex roles." The opportunities opened to women in the 1940s altered women's behavior and beliefs about their proper place in the public sphere. After the war traditional gender beliefs reasserted themselves, but the changes made during the war left lasting impressions on women and others, and thus "laid the precondition for an awakened womanhood in the 1960s."

Best of all, it's an entertaining read, which is refreshing from a business book. The Gregorys' writing style sends readers a clear message that both life and work can-and should be-fun. While the Gregorys are strong promoters of the lifestyle, this book is far from Pollyannish. The authors write that it takes an unwavering commitment to both the marriage and businesses for this lifestyle to be a success, and those who will not do so are better off sticking to more traditional ways of making a living. But those with a burn to chase business dreams and share more of life with their families will cheer The Home Team for the information and inspiration it provides that will help them create their own, m! ore rewarding vision of success.

Good craftsmanship was a necessity, not to make these objects perfect, but to have them render many long years of service. Leaonard Everett Fischer simply explains and illustrates the making of candles, soap, brooms and cider -- all necessities of life.

This book is a perfect addition to a young history student's understanding of the lives of ordinary people in colonial times.

MaryAnn Cook's breezy writing style adds a refreshing twist to the well-worn path of a married couple's adjustment to a spouse's retirement. Cook's use of humor, personal experience, and religious principles has created a helpful book that's also a fun read.
