Midlife Tune-Up offers construction suggestions on important skills to build a better life. As in the author's examples, life throws us curves and this book gives us helpful strategies to take control of our future. It gives intellectual insights and a encouraging step-by-step plan on how to live and behave productively. We are reminded we do have a choice in our perception of life. This is a good thought provoking book with lots of information to absorb.

Being a mother is a job in itself but being a mother that works, owning a business, taking care of a house, raising two children and being a wife it can be overwhelming at times, but after reading this book it has some really good self help tips. I have known Tim Burns for several years now and he truly is a great person and he has such a warming spirit, that quite frankly is a rare find these days, so if you are looking for a great book with some great self help tips and just a great read, pick up Mid Life Tune Up you will love it as I did.

As Tim pulls from his own personal life, he is able to target main concerns of both men and women. This is an informative and insightful take on how to manage with what inevitably happens to all of us... age, change and challenge.

This book fills a valuable niche in the spectrum of pregnancy books. It provides everything the working woman needs to get through the whole process, from planning the pregnancy to delivery to working out post partum logistics. It assumes that the reader is a thinking, rationale person and provides sound medical advice but also has a warm and pleasant voice. Great read and very necessary!

You known how sometimes when you read a novel you just skip down the page reading the conversation in quotes? I did the same thing with this one because the quotes from other working moms were so entertaining. They really flesh out the main points and also show the variety of normal experience. I also loved, loved, loved the first chapter--the quiz about "Are You (Even) Ready to Have a Baby". Lots of working women aren't sure.

Dr. Greenfield's book is a complete informative book that provides pertinent information and comfort to those women considering or experiencing pregnancy.
Her facts are accurate and reflect the latest "state-of-the-art" medical and technical knowledge.
She addresses issues about the human emotional element that are sometimes forgotten in books of this nature.
I highly recommend this book to all women of child-bearing age.

This book is terrific! The Working Woman's Pregnancy Book is a must buy for all new mothers, even those who don't work. As a mom and a nurse-midwife, I recommend it to everyone. I'm buying two copies for my daughter-in-laws.
The author covers everything from early pregnancy to labor and delivery to the postpartum period. What I like most are the practical tips for how to arrange your life, not after you go back to work, but before. The author, a woman OB/Gyn, and working mom, even discusses sex!
The index is helpful. The text is clear and easy to read. I loved the comments by real patients. Everything is explained intelligently but with common sense, and not in a scary way. I list this book, with four others, in my OB packet. It's a little expensive, but worth it. I love it.

This book is very well done. It reads like a conversation that every pregnant woman would hope to have with her OB/GYN...while the title may lead you to belive it's only about being pregnant in the workplace, it is actually much more broad than that and covers all aspects of pregnancy from pre-conception to after delivery. An excellent resource.

I was trying to come up with a birthday gift idea for my sister-in-;aw, when it hit me--why not a selection of some of my favorite books of all time. This is one of them. It is a classic in the women's history fiction genre, a great read, dramatic, strong narrative drive and very edifying. It takes place in the mills in New England in the 19th century and its protagonist is one of the most fascinating characters I have read. There's a reason it is still in print--because it is still gripping readers long after its initial publication date. You won't be able to put it down!!
Thanks Nancy.

Zaroulis describes the carriage trip of the Agent (boss) of the biggest textile mill up Church St., crossing the Concord river, going up the hill till it becomes Andover St. and the neighborhood of Belvedere where his home was along with other now almost 200 year old mansions. I walked the very route so many times to visit girlfriends being oblivious to the history I was walking along. Our schools taught us next to nothing of Lowell's history and so I left a city, badly in need of CPR, in '58 to go off to the completely different world of LA to go to USC. Reading Zaroulis many years later, I could again walk, because of here attention to detail, many streets/neighborhoods of my youth....albeit in my mind...and come to belatedly, greatly appreciate the men and women who made my life possible. If you ever go to New England, don't miss a day or two visiting the exhibitions of the mills, canals, and boarding houses as part of the National Park Service's restoration. Include the American Textile Museum for its recreation as well of what it was like working in the huge rooms of looms. Once piqued with "Call", I'll bet you'll want to go with Zaroulis as she follows a passenger of the Mayflower as he begins a genealogy up to the mid 1900s in her next book, Massachusetts.

I read this book a couple of years ago and have recommended it to a number of people. It is a well written account of a young woman's experiences in a Lowell mill. Not only does it cover the mill aspect but a good part of her life. It gave me a better outlook on what life must have been like for my grandparents who came to work in the mills of Rhode Island. Because of their exposure to the mill atmosphere, they suffered from the ailments associated with that type of work (grandfather died at 34/grandmother had "white lung"). I had no idea until I read this book, just what the working conditions were at the time. A must-read for those people interested in the industrial revolution and its effect on the people who worked in that system. Also provides a reason for the union movement in later years.

This historical novel gives an excellent and moving description of early New England life.. with special reference to some of the largest cotton mills in the U.S. I wish this author would do more. To bad all good things have to end, but the story did. I was fortunate to have found an "uncorrected proof" copy to read.

The author was way ahead of her time with the popularity of Angela's Ashes. Of course this book was written without the humor but the plight of the Irish was far more intense.
Today the book stores are filled with novels not more than 300 pages. This book left me emotionally fatigued. Now I must wait a week before I even try a new one because I cannot forget Zaroulis' writing.

If there was one book I would suggest to anyone venturing into the waters of eBay, it'd end up being this one... eBay: The Missing Manual by Nancy Conner. This one covers it all.
Contents:
Part 1 - Buying on eBay: Ready, Set, Shop!; Bidding, Paying, and Following Up; Finding - and Getting - Bargains; Power Buying Strategies
Part 2 - Selling on eBay: Sell Stuff, Make Money; Honing Your Competitive Edge; Going from Hobby to Business; Specialty Selling; Cool Tools for Sellers
Part 3 - Finding Other eBayers and Getting Help; Finding Help
Part 4 - Appendixes: Where to Learn More; HTML for eBayers; Other Auction Sites; Index
Like all other eBay books, this one covers how to buy and sell on eBay. The writing's good, but there'd be nothing special if it stopped there. Where this book earns its keep is when it goes into areas I haven't seen covered in any other book. I've never seen a book go into any detail on other resources to learn about eBay, such as call-in internet radio shows and newsletters. I've never seen a book cover HTML in a small number of pages in order to allow the seller to create better auction pages. There's good coverage on third-party sites that give you more information on how to best price your auctions. There's even material on how to evolve from buying and selling as a hobby to running a business based on eBay. Package all this up with clear writing and numerous screen shots, and you really *have* found the missing eBay manual.
To paraphrase eBay's latest ad campaign... "Whatever you're looking for, you'll find *it* in eBay: The Missing Manual"...

Without a doubt this book has changed my life for the better. I have gone from deadend job to deadend job for the past 15 years now, but while reading this book it was like the fog finally lifted. I realized I needed to find the job I loved, not the job that simply paid the bills. Now I am on my way - finally. The exercises seem simple and I really didn't see how they would help me, but they did. They get right to the point and you discover things you didn't even know were an issue for you. I would reccommend this book to anyone who is in this situation.

Leslie Godwin's advice will hit home for so many of today's women, and, I believe, inspire them all. With case studies, e-mails, and lessons from a variety of women of different ages and in different careers, Leslie shows how to deal with the burnout that so many of us experience in different phases of life. From parenting issues to workplace challenges, there are many parts of the book that may speak to you.
Her exercises and worksheets show you how to take action and point you in the right direction to find the path to your passion. Her insightful comments will make you stop and think about things that you may never have reflected on before, and get you to see things in a new and productive light.
I highly recommend this book, and am confident you will find it worth many times its price! This is a book to keep, savor, and refer to again and again as you reach for your goals, even as those goals change over time.

I found Leslie's book accidentally a year ago in an airport bookstore. I had no idea what the book was about, only that I was burned out working in a small job in a toxic work environment. It was so inexpensive, I bought it. When I began to sift through it, I wondered how these little simple worksheets would be able to do anything like the cover promised - rekindling the passion.
I could not have been more wrong. Once I started reading the book, so simple in language, and did my first worksheet - I realized in just a few questions- deeper issues that I was unaware of that were driving my passion and also fueling my fear. I had a lifelong dream but was hiding out as a passionate workaholic in smaller jobs.
Leslie's book not only gently and simply will dig things out at the root but will inspire you to get up, take step by step, and will make sure that this time, you will do it with BALANCE.
This book is so incredibly healthy, and it has become my companion over the last year. The worksheets are a wonder (especially the Synergy Plan worksheet). I recommend making an electronic version and updating it as you progress (and you will progress through those steps with Leslie's help).
Because of this book, I left my old toxic workplace and opened my horizons to being on my path. I am now in a new position I love for the timebeing, have balance, and am pursuing my lifelong dream career in parallel. I carry the Synergy Plan Worksheet with me in my organizer and refer to it regularly to take the next steps. Step by step, this book will lead you there. It's worth every penny and more!

I've been on both sides of the job interview process: as someone doing the hiring and also as a candidate for a job. It is amazing how being on the job hunt alters your view of the interview process. Did I develop some kind of "interview fever" which made me overly nervous and forget what it was like to hire someone? Maybe. But reading Winning Job Interviews allowed me to step back and put it all back into proper perspective so I could ace the interview and get the job. How cool is that?

Clear, direct, concise.
The first 40 pages will tell you what you really know: how you feel. And how to deal with it. With an upbeat language helps you decrease your anxiety and depression. And further, MOTIVATE you.
Then clear clues on how to behave, conduct, and win interviews.
I wish he could avoid some areas of job searching and closing to have more material on the topic.
But IT IS A MUST READ.

I'm getting ready to retire from a successful military career. To be honest, before reading Dr. Power's book-the thought of joining the rat-race of the whole job interview process was more formidable than facing another deployment to the desert! At 40 years old I haven't had to go on a job interview in over 20 years! This book was not only fun to read, but offered great tips, warned against common pit falls (I was sure to fall into) and helped me plan out my strategy to attain my future career. It's hard to imagine, but after reading this candid, well-written book I feel not only self-confident but actually excited about my upcoming interviews!

This book was definitely money well spent. I have interviewed and accepted jobs previously in my career (10yrs in my profession), but have never been as prepared as I was after reading this book. I used it from the start of the job hunt process to accepting the best overall offer. Reading the book helped ease pre-interview anxiety, and also helped me prepare for interviews by providing a good idea of what to expect, how to prepare, and how to answer difficult questions, etc. The sections I found most helpful were on generating multiple offers, and negotiating after the initial offer. I used Dr Powers advice on both, and was able to generate multiple offers and negotiate significantly higher salary and vacation time. Well worth the money and I would recommend this book to anyone currently on the job hunt.

The Career Pathways Handbook is an excellent resource for both job hunters and career counselors alike. Each occupation is meticulously described in regards to job tasks, wage information, career paths, and future employment outlook. People
interested in a particular career can assess their qualifications by reviewing the skills, abilities, and educational and training requirements associated with that occupational field. The compilation of all this information into a single resource is incredible. For the past 20 years, I have been involved in nation-wide studies to develop a similar resources for the U.S. Department of Labor and other governmental agencies, and I can honestly say that Mr. Cassio's text is comparable to some of the best occupational research that has been conducted in the past 30 years. As an Occupational Research Psychologist, I refer to it often when conducting occupational analysis studies.

Career Pathways Handbook is a straightforward, alphabetical list of the basic requirements and expectancies for various common careers, from accountant and adjustment clerk to waiter/waitress and welder. Each career profile spans several pages and includes a summary of job tasks, expected education and training, estimated employment outlook, typical wages, top emplying industries, most important skills and abilities, typical career paths, a dialogue with an industry worker, and chart comparisons of occupations with similar skill sets. The latest U.S. employment statistics for 2005-2006 round out this excellent basic resource in planning one's future livelihood. Highly recommended for high school and college students especially as a fact-filled primer of what the real world expects of its workforce, but useful to anyone interested in exploring new career paths.

A collection of career profiles, this compact book brims with important information of more than 150 occupations, with links to several hundred others. But to me the real stars of the book are the folks who actually do the work. Their personal stories in the career dialogue sections will help career explorers and job seekers visualize themselves doing the work--to try on the occupation.
Users of this single-source book will have no doubts about skills, education and training requirements, job outlook and typical salary for careers they are considering. Career counseling professionals and human resource managers will reach for this definitive book as a quick reference source again and again.
The Resource Guide in the back of the book is a real bonus. Unique and unexpected in this kind of work, it outlines a commonsense step-by-step path to chose and enter a career field.

I needed this book when I first became a manager 10 years ago, but at least I have it now. Ms. Hacker did a great job of organizing the chapters and making the book understandable. I hire people almost weekly and finally know why I have had problems in the past. This book showed me how to organize my search and zero in on the right person for the job. I was using the hit or miss approach in the past. I ended up hiring lots of misfits. Thank you Ms. Hacker for making my job easier. Are you writing another book?

This book is written for the manager who must hire good people. After reading this book I feel I know how to stay focused in my search as well as where to get people. The questions that can be asked during the interview located in the Appendix were EXTREMELY helpful. I used to think that I ran a high risk of asking something illegal, but now realize that there are many questions I can lawfully ask. Overall, this book was an excellent investment.

This book is written for managers both new and experienced. I have been supervising people for more than 20 years. I found this book to be loaded with good, solid information that I could use and share with my staff. Hiring good people that mesh with the rest of the team isn't easy, especially given the low unemployemnt rate. The author organized this book in a manner that made it convenient to pick up and put down as time permitted. I learned a number of things that have changed the way I recruit for my department. I have 500 people I'm responsible for as a plant manager. I needed this book 20 years ago!

Carol Hacker has done a service to those who are serious about weeding out the costly bad hires that are waiting out there to harm your organization. She makes excellent points and warns about the huge costs of making a mistake.

Terrific book -- both interesting to read (especially the stories of how other women used the web to become successful) and helpful (containing tips on how you can do it too.) It was also very practical, especially (at least for me)the section on growing your business on the Internet. I've read other books in this area, which were very dry, but this was a fast read and a very helpful one as well. I highly recommended this book -- and you don't have to be a female to enjoy it.

This book has been a wealth of knowledge for me. I have just started selling my craft and had very little experience with a business of my own. While some of the information is less technical or web savvy the general ideas and business structure information is well presented in a human and positive way.
This book is easy to read cover to cover (minus a few typos) or to jump into a specific section. Barbara Brabec seems to have done some really useful research with this book.
