I owned this book quite a few years ago (probably first edition) and ended up loaning out my copy to a woman looking for a new job. Of course, it's so good I never got it back. Needless to say, I absolutely have to own this book again. I help friends and family with job searches and this book has been a very solid tool for me to help them, as well as help myself in my own career. Even men find this book very helpful. DO NOT PASS THIS ONE BY! This is a must-have for any woman's career arsenal!

Every woman should read this book

The roots of the Civil Rights Movement
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-03-15
Long before the civil rights movements of the 1950s, black industrial workers in the 1930s and '40s set the stage in the South for social change movements. Labor organizers, wary of the racially-exclusive AFL, began organizing for the CIO, with significant support from the organization. Their participation in union politics, elections and organizing "profoundly unsettled the segregation system."

It also confronted trade unions with whether they were concerned simply with wages and working conditions or with larger social goals. While civil rights movements of the era were wholly defeated, the success of the CIO in the 1940s arose largely from the civil rights organizing, and they laid the groundwork for the movements of the '50s and '60s. For instance, racial segregation under local political boss Edward H. Crump extinguished many civil rights for working-class whites as well as blacks, and organizing for civil rights and labor rights became intertwined.

A Must for Anyone Interested in Memphis Working Class History

Michael Honey does a fantastic job in explaining the CIO's contribution to the Struggle for Civil Rights. The Left-Led CIO Unions, most of all FTA Local 19, prepared a cadre of African-American working class leaders in Memphis, who were, in fact, the precursors to those of the 1960s. A must for anyone interested in the study of the Labor role in Civil Rights History in Memphis and the South in the 1930s-1950s.

Best book about the working class South I have read.

Can't understand how this country works if you don't see how racism has been used, especially to divide workers. Honey writes about a pivotal time in American history when the working class was organizing and had the potential to transform the South for workers and African-Americans. The lessons are no less true today. A must read for organizers of any persuasion.

The nine authors who each tackle a chapter provide a unique and fascinating insight into life, and more specifically, women's life at Los Alamos. This book is a must read for those interested in the cultural and social aspects of the Manhattan Project at Los Alamos.

a marvelous compilation of reminiscences

Review Date: 1999-04-22
This book, originally compiled during the early postwar years at Los Alamos, consists of reminiscences, letters, and essays by representative women who devoted their lives to the Los Alamos experience during World War II. A unique description of the Manhattan Project, it remains one of those disarming pieces of historical literature that make history such an engrossing field to wander into.

Motivation for Inventors

Review Date: 2003-05-05
I found this book very inspiring and motivating, especially the second chapter on finding a business to start. It is better to start with a mediocre product than never to get going. .. the continued search for the perfect venture can turn into mere procrastination... Make the decision that you are an entrepreneur. If your plan doesn't work...you are that much closer to ultimate success. This is worth having in your library so you can re-read periodically

The Startup Entrepreneur

"The Startup Entrepreneur - How you can succeed in building your own company". It provides you with all the insight into running of a business from startup stage right through to corporation size from the entrepreneur's point of view.

Reading advice; can sometimes be a tedious task, but this book is backed up by James Cook's real life examples of the trials that he went through as an entrepreneur. Right from starting small, in a service-based business then growing to a large corporation this book missed nothing. Its inspirational, advice driven, with plenty of information on what to do in given situations.

Another interesting topic this book covered was the background information given about many of the "famous" entrepreneurs that came out of the American economy. It is a study in the entrepreneur and their habits and common traits. Commonalties were usually that they didn't care a hell of a lot of what people thought of them, they weren't overly greedy, had the need for control, and also had the need for anonymity.

Chapters in the book include starting, developing, success in starting, winning ways to keep you going, and how to diversify your growing enterprise. It finishes with exit strategies, i.e. stepping down, and/or selling your company. It then has a section on one of the crucial topics for all decision makers in a company - tips on marketing and sales. There was even an interesting section on running a sales team.

This is a well-written book with much of the theory based on James Cook's interesting and extremely varied life in business, both in success and on the brink of failure. Motivational for the young and old entrepreneur, I give it an nine out of ten.

One day while at a vacum cleaner seminar with my family, I began to realize that I was feeling a little woozy. No, it wasn't the pickeled ham I had for breakfast... No, it wasn't father's key note speech on cleaning filters quarterly...No, It wasn't a panic attack.....It was a CLASS ACTION DICRIMINATION SUIT and it was coming on strong!!! These endless chapters on legal gargain were my only way to fend off evil plantifs trying to sue me under the table. This book ranks up with my favorites, and is a must have for all readers of great books like Where's Waldo In Hollywood and Curious George goes to the ZOO.

The only How-To Resume guide you will need
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2005-03-02
This is the first review I have done but I thought this book was excellent and it sure came in handy for me when I needed to prepare a resume over a weekend. I picked up `Surviving the 15-Second Resume Read' at my local library along with `Resumes for Dummies'. I looked at `Surviving' first and was glad I did. The author gives very thorough and specific instructions on how to prepare an effective and great looking resume. There are plenty of before and after examples with explanations of why changes were made. She even gets into the details of font selection, font size, and how to set up `styles' in Microsoft Word to make it easier if you have to make changes later. She mentions things you should and should not include in a resume. It's not uncommon to see things in resumes that the author says you should not include (like an Objective). After seeing some of the resume examples in `Surviving', the ones in other books don't look near as good. You can't go wrong with this book. If you only get one book on writing resumes, pick up `Surviving the 15-second Resume Read'.

I'm a management consultant who used to be a corporate recruiter, and have taught thousands of managers and executives how to interview others. This is the ONLY book I recommend. It is exceptionally detailed, and provides a complete approach. It gives you scripts, and tells you what to do and say in each part of the interview. It also tells you the one thing managers always forget to ask (and other books don't address) about interviewing: it's not enough to know which questions to ask, you must also know HOW TO EVALUATE THE ANSWERS YOU GET.

This is the only book you need about how to interview.
