A timely and visionary book

Review Date: 1998-12-01
`New Internationalisms' is a timely and visionary book. It stands on the cusp of critique and prescription, as being both an account of internationalism and a manifesto on how it should or could develop. It is an important contribution to debates on the possibilities of internationalism, that have raged for at least 150 years, since the publication of the Communist Manifesto. The author has been involved in these issues for much of his life, and the book is the outcome of political involvement as much as academic interest. The opening chapter invites the reader on a 'voyage of discovery, a voyage simultaneously professional, political and personal' (9), much later, in the postscript, this is clarified as a journey 'from proletarian and socialist internationalism to a cross-class and democratic one' (247). There is recognition that labour internationalism was always cross-class, and that 'the bearers of internationalism have customarily been middle-class intellectuals', and importantly, the author recognises himself in this image, and explores the logic of the role, revealing all the frustrations and inspirations of his 'many years in the wilderness' (247-53). The book ends with Edward Thompson's aspiration to an 'international of the imagination'. Taken as a whole, New Internationalisms is a seven part journey that argues for this imagination, and for the 'global solidarity' that expresses it.

No one provides more profound insight into internationalism

Global capital is building a new world, but there's a spectre haunting it. While Communism as we knew it has evaporated, mass strikes and upheavals rage in dozens of countries and insurgent networks spread their tendrils across the borders of nations and regions. The outsiders are raising fists - and joining hands - in ways the architects of corporate globalism never anticipated. No one provides more profound insight into the meaning of the new transnational struggles than Peter Waterman. Read `Globalization, Social Movements and the New Internationalisms' to get the inside story of the outside story.

A scholarly and passionate argument for internationalism
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 1998-04-08
Since the collapse of official communism, the left has been incapable of reformulating a cogent internationalist position. Waterman insists that the end of the desicated, state-centric forms of socialism should be seen as an opportunity to recover a humanist and emancipatory tradition. He convincingly shows that the aims of the `alternative' or `new' social movements are not in opposition to the labour movement. The links between the labour and feminist movements are especially well portrayed. Passionately written by an activist and a scholar, this book will aid the long climb back by the left to political and intellectual credibility. I read this book a LONG time ago when looking for a job out of college. It was, and still is, one of the best books I have ever read about job hunting. The tips and advice are very useful because instead of focusing on what you want, you learn to focus on what you are best at. Very thought-provoking and very useful. Learned back then to take what I can do and apply to what I want to do. i still use the techniques and features I learned back then. Tough to find the book now. But well worth it. (Actually, hunting for the book just further shows a trait you may enjoy and be good at...)

It worked over 20 years ago and it still works!

I first read this book when I had a degree in Hebrew, little work experience (most of which was clerical and which I hated) and no idea of where I wanted to go. Oddly enough, I have found myself in a situation where I now have 18 years of experience (most of which was corporate and which I hated) plus five years of disability, which is offputting to almost every interviewer. I am currently in the process of re-reading Irish's book, mostly for the analytical exercises he offers.

In summary, Irish suggests that you get a roll of shelf paper (at least that's what I'm using) and list out everything you've done, both for pay and as a volunteer. Then list out everything you loved and everything you didn't love about what you've done to see what kinds of patterns emerge. For example, when I initially used the book, I loved talking to people and I hated taking orders from people I didn't respect. Knowing this, I went to a variety of people to "interview them for information." Since I wasn't asking them for a job, rather for an opinion, many doors and subsequently several good offers came my way.

I should also mention that I recommended this book many, many times to friends and co-workers who weren't happy -- just to point them to the exercises. Somewhere along the way, I forgot my own advice and have really been struggling with conventional thinkers who see only my disability, age and experience and consider them all to be negatives. I think this book is a must-read for anyone who has been displaced as well as anyone who just isn't happy with what they're doing. Life is just too darned short to accept less than the best.

The best employment book I've ever read. You're not begging for a chance, you are looking for where you really want to go. Challenges you to change the usual seat of power. You are interviewing them. A useful psychological switch.

A comprehensive career guide and a job locator for health care jobs
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2006-08-12
The new fourth edition of "Health Care Job Explosion!: High Growth Health Care Careers and Job Locator" is a brand new comprehensive career guide and a job locator for health care jobs. Health career data can be accessed at multiple internet sites, with one created especially for this book (http://healthcarejobs.org). The book is very user-friendly and is conveniently organized into 10 chapters. The first, "the Health Care Explosion," is an overview, while the second, "the Nexus - Making a Connection," is helpful to increase chances of obtaining the desired job. Chapter three, "Job Sources for Everyone," is an invaluable key to many resources, including job advertising services, job fairs, job hotlines, internet sites, associations and directories. It even includes pages on the Internet, Surfing lessons, LIST SERVERS, search engines, and education and career resources. A handy system of symbols connects the reader to the desired resource. Chapters four through ten cover general health care job areas, from health technologists and technicians to dietetics, pharmacy, therapy, nursing, health and social services, health diagnosing occupations and assistants, and home health care jobs. Each of these chapters begins with an interview with a practicing health care worker in the listed field. Job descriptions include significant points, a description of the nature of the work, working conditions, training, qualifications and advancement, job outlook, earnings, and related occupations. This is followed by an exhaustive listing of additional special resources pertaining to that occupation/area, again using the helpful icons established in chapter 3. Finally, Appendices A and B present information about health care corporations and sources for tuition and scholarships for specialized health care job training. "Health Care Job Explosion!" is an updated resource that will serve all who seek to build a career in one of the many areas related to health care in the United States. It would be a valued addition to the shelves of libraries and education institutions.

I knew I needed a change in life and a new career. But I new it needed to be something that paid decent and would give me job security. So I bought this book, read about the different fields and then handed it over to my teenage daughter to get her thinking about her future....This book guided me in the right direction and now I am in school and will graduate in early 2008. I will have job security and a decent salary until I retire. If you are interested in the medical field then this book is a great guide in helping you decide what you would like to do and how much education you need, where to go to school and what exams you must pass. Great book for those looking for a career change or just thinking of trying something else in life.

Hire Me, Inc. Resumes and Cover Letters: That Get Results

Excellent book that gave results!!!

I bought this book for me, but ended up using it to provide some feedback on a coworker's resume and got fantastic results. I almost completely re-wrote his resume, and apparently he liked it because he used most of it and landed one of the first jobs he applied for! (though he is a great guy with good qualifications)

I chose this particular book because it covers all of the bases and has practical advice on crafting a great resume. It includes information on the types of resumes (chronological, functional) and C.V.'s (both scientific and academic) and the basic content and length for each. There are also brief sections on cover letters, business cards and job searches.

The best strength of this book is the exercises it provides for writing the "experience" section and selling yourself. The exercises were easy to follow, thought-provoking and allowed me to emphasize and extol my coworker's best qualities (hopefully I can do the same for myself when it comes time!) I came away with text that really had some "punch" to it. I also used the sample resumes in the back to find a format that made the best information pop out visually. It really made the resume look professional and impressive.

The book also answers a number of general questions about resumes and what should and should not be included. It is easy-to-read and contains a good amount of information without being overwhelming. (You want to write a good resume, but don't want to have to read 500 pages before starting!!!)

Overall, I think this is a fantastic book and would definitely recommend it to others since I was impressed that even me (an engineer and terrible writer) could come up with a resume good enough to impress my coworker!!!

Roy Blitzer is an executive coach and management consulting who has worked for more than thirty years as a human resources and business management professional. He therefore brings a very special and knowledgeable expertise to "Hire Me, Inc.: Resumes And Cover Letters That Get Results". Blitzer covers the various resume formats (Skills/Functional Resume; Chronological Resume; Combined Resume) as well as the Curriculum Vitae and resume alternatives. Then he goes on to lay out the components of the basic resume format; questions to think about in recording experience; education and professional development; tips and techniques in shaping the resume; and the cover letter and other complementary tools to the resume. Of special note is the chapter devoted to internet tips, hints, and polishing points. Sample resumes are provided for both for-profit and not-for-profit applicants. Simply stated, "Hire Me, Inc." will prove to be an invaluable, indispensable instruction guide for anyone seeking a job or career advancement and using their resume to do so.

Review Date: 1996-06-15
Bad title for a great book. I hate some of those "how-to" tomes on job-hunting or interview skills that are loaded with fill-in charts and graphs. It's like listening to a teacher in front of a blackboard. Jeff writes like a buddy over a beer. He's smart, funny and sounds like the recent undergrad he is. Better than that, his advice is absolutely sound. Clearly, he's been there, done that. Useful for any ambitious college grad starting out on the career quest, this book is particularly useful to seniors or recent grads looking for jobs on Wall Street or consulting.

How Can a Christian Be in Politics?: A Guide Toward Faithful Politics (Vital Questions)

At one point I figured that as a Christian--maybe even a "progressive" Christian, I could never run for office. Mr. Herron's book told me what I think I already knew: As a Christian whose motivation comes from the Sermon on the Mount, how can one NOT run for office if that is the guidance you feel? I'm on the ballot.

Attention to state politics

Herron gives a heartfelt "yes" to those who question whether liberals' values are Christian values. Although books with this theme are now raining down on us, his should be the first choice for those dealing with politics at the state level. Moreover, it is small and inexpensive--an ideal choice for book "liberations."
In answer to McGeehee's question about how to find more of Herron's ideal politicians, I offer this suggestion. Commit to a party; brainstorm with others who share your concern; convince people you admire to run. Those people who say,
"I vote for the man not the party," don't understand their duty in helping to find the best candidates possible.

Herron does not concede reliance on scriptures to biblical literalists, but wades right in, applying both Old and New Testaments to finding guidance for living in the politicized arena. From the Old Testament, he meditates upon the Israelite concept of "shalom", a synonym for wholeness, orderliness, relationship, and peace, the counter-part of which in the New Testament is "eirene", the triangular right relationship of God-to-man and man-to-man. He finds particular inspiration in Jeremiah's commandment to "seek the welfare of the city" and Micah's entreaty to "do justice, and love kindness, and to walk humbly with God", and in Jesus's Sermon on the Mount and his injunction to feed the hungry, give drink to the thirsty, welcome the stranger, clothe the naked, visit the imprisoned, and care for the sick. Such concepts embrace both biblical justice and love.
Interspersed with Herron's guidelines are personalized stories that illuminate his points: how medical research saved the lives of his twin sons, clean water legislation as a form of quenching thirst, how visiting prisoners leads to job training, drug treatments, and literacy programs, how legislature on lending rates and usury help the poor. Especially interesting is Herron's expansion of right-to-life concepts beyond the controversies of abortion, in legislation against drunk driving, in favor of seat belts, in police protection against killers or domestic violence, in teen-age gun control, in organ transplants, and in health care delivery. He speaks powerfully in defense of human and constitutional freedoms of worship, assembly, speech, and trial by jury.
What a contrast Herron's ideal politician--compassionate, a good listener, patient and forbearing, humble, sacrificial, reverent, able to love enemies, able to cross partisan lines, truthful, courageous, joyful--presents to the manipulative Machiavellian commonplace lawgiver!
The only question Herron does not address adequately is how to find such people and how to get them to run for office.
Our highlighting of Herron's handy book for Christian politics does him some injustice. He is far less religiously polarized than this synopsis makes him out to be. He is not out to attack the Religious Right. He eschews dogmatism and demands. His mission is to show how Christian faith is relevant to our times.
But from our perspective, it is refreshing and reviving to find a rejoicing politician who has not conceded the defining of faithfulness to those seeking to impose their religious convictions upon us and to turn democracy into theocracy. It is delightful to have an alternative deeply-help religious view that does not levitate Levitican legalism above the love of God and the teachings of Jesus.
Moses stood upon a mountaintop and delivered good "thou shalt nots", but Jesus stood on a mountaintop and completed the unfinished Mosaic message with great Christian "thou shalts". Senator Herron beckons us to renew our faith and to take seriously the hard task of making our politics better through it.

This is the most thorough, step-by-step book I've ever read on this subject. It is perfect for any young adult who wants to know how to get a job (that includes college aged men and women). This book provides a simple recipe on how a teenager or any young adult can go about getting a job.

The format of the book is setup so that it is easy to read. There are quotes and examples from people as well as check lists that make the book very interesting. I found myself thinking, "that's a good idea!" many times throughout the book.

My teenage daughter read it and followed the method explained in the book. She got three job offers for this summer in the first week. I was amazed because she has no work experience. Looking neat, being prepared, and showing a sense of responsibility go a long way to landing a job.

I can't say enough about how well organized and interesting this book it. Anyone who has a teenager or works with teenagers should buy this book!
