This is a great book for CAD Managment, and for users who inspire to be leaders in the CAD field. Even though this book does not directly speak on specific CAD functions it covers a broader look at the task that a CAD Manager/Coordinator must know in order to be succesful in leading other CAD users, and helps you get a better understanding of the business side that we as technical people overlook a lot. If you are a manager or a user that would like to be better at your job or to advance to a better position, I would advise you to read this book.

Mr. Williams presentation is clear and easy to follow. The text is well thought out and organized into separate chapters covering major design topics. He has taken the time to ferret out all the pertinent footnotes and includes them in the appropriate sections. His summaries and tables are worth the price of admission alone. If you are taking the SE Exam .... Get this book.

This book is great in its written and graphic information about what is in a good set of drawings. I use it to teach construction documents for residential construction, but it also explains isometrics and perspectives. It includes well drawn examples my students can look at as well as specific instructions and examples of what should be included on each drawing. It covers arch, stuctural, and site drawings for both a residential and light commercial. I use it for a AutoCad drafting class because it works so well as a guide for either hand or computer drafting. it explains the Drawing Conventions for line types, material harthes and detail cuts. it has isometric examples to show how sections are cut thru the building. And it isn't too big or expensive.

Baker's Pro-Guide Lip Balm SPF-15 (Cherry) 3-PACK
This is a great book for both the finance savy and those struggling to get a grip on your company finances. I would highly recommend it for any architect, engineer or graphic design firm; but know that the principles are easily applied to any business. Like a good foundation the authors starts at the beginning and builds to your end goal with each chapter. The most valuable aspect of this book is that the material was presented in a way that is easy to understand, even while watching TV. What would make the book better? I would suggest a section on applying the strategies with QuickBooks. Since the majority of small to medium design firms use QuickBooks for their accounting it would have been really helpful if the book had presented example companies with charts of accounts, budgets, P&L, profit plan, etc using QuickBooks software. Even if your firm is profitable I would recommend reading this book to help you find those subtl;e areas in your business where you can make improvements.

As a busy Architect who did not double major in business, this book not only helped me understand how to really know how my company was (or wasn't) doing financially, it helped me communicate what my Accountant needed to know (he did not double major in Architecture.) I highly recommend this book to all Sole Proprietor Architects who want to know how much money they need to keep the ship floating! Good luck!

The book is informative but i find it not using SI. In the Philippines we are using SI so it will be time consuming for conversion works. Also the topic for bridge design is limited. I hope it can be expanded by the author.

Good Information but about to go into extinction

I bought this book long time ago in order to prepare for my pre-design architecture registration exam. I did go through only half of it and go take an exam which was a mistake. I failed, of course. Then I became more prepared and I read through it three times, take notes carefully. I took the second trial of exam and I passed it. A lot of basic information that were presented on this book appeared in the exam. There will always be questions about ADA, Safety, Climate, Principle of Design etc. If you read all of these and understand them all, I believe you will definitely pass the exams. The information that are not in this book but appear in the exams are in small numbers. They are not significant enough to make you fail. (At least that's my experiences.) Now, anyone who wants to buy this book has to know that this book will be extinct by July 2008 when the ARE 4.0 starts. You might think that it is the same information and you are actually right. It is the same information in ARE 4.0. However, if you have the perception of "one and only book that I'll ever need to pass the exam" for this book, then I am really sorry to inform you that you are wrong. The ARE 4.0 will be more hybrid and more sophisticated which you have to research from NCARB website. Eventually Kaplan will have to publish a new book for ARE 4.0 and this book will become extinct.

Do you have a Civil Engineering Reference Book?
Very Poorly Organized and Confusing Book

This is one of the most poorly organized review books I have read. Alan Williams has managed to make the same fatal flaw that so many engineers who attempt to write review books make. He has written a book geared to an audience who already understands the material. If someone knows the material, they wouldn't need this review book. In addition to typing errors that referencing sections of the UBC that do not exist, the sample problems are poorly organized and confusing. The ability to mind read is a prerequisite. For example, sample problem # 6 shows a solved force diagram that is not calculated anywhere in sample #6. After wasting valuable time asking yourself "what am I missing", you will give up in frustration and continue reading. Only the find the solution five pages later...in sample problem #10 which references back to #6. Essentially, you are given solutions to samples BEFORE you are introduced to the theory. The author makes too many assumptions and takes too many shortcuts in explainations. If you want to fill your mind with confusion and headaches, buy this book. If you want to fill it with organized knowledge, look elsewhere.

I like the idea that the book is not only written for Autodesk Users.
Users of other CAD Systems will find the Book interesting as well.
