While I've yet to find the definitive book on selecting and implementing a sales automation solution in a corporate environment, "High Impact Sales Force Automation" does provide an important piece to the puzzle. The book helps put sales automation into perspective and provides a solid background for those individuals charged with finding an automated solution for their organization. After reading this book, I was able to hold intelligent conversations with many of major providers of enterprise-wide solutions.

I have spent most of my day reading HIPAA@IT and although my eyes are a bit sore, it is the best material I have come across on the subject yet. Very comprehensive, well organized, easy to understand. It's one stop shopping! I was trying to pull together all that material from dozens of other sources. Thanks!

Streamlined version of HIPAA@IT Reference

Review Date: 2001-09-17
This book is a streamlined version of HIPAA@IT Reference by the same author. At roughly half the page count as the "Reference" edition, this book covers the same material but in a more abbreviated manner. It leaves out non-essential information provided in the bigger book, such as history, theory and examples. It also does not include two sections that go into detail about the 'Insurance Portability' and the 'Accountability' portions of HIPAA related to IS and administrative simplification.

As an IT consultant who works with health care clients (among other industries) this book or the more comprehensive one upon which it's based are invaluable guides. Both address HIPAA from an IT perspective; both cut through thousands of pages of sometimes confusing text associated with NPRMs and law to expose the key issues.

There are three main areas covered: (1) Transactions and Codes (from the perspective of payments between providers and payers and includes transactions, code sets, identifiers and impact), (2) Privacy (patient-health care relationship covering key HIPAA requirements) and (3)Security (compliance life cycle, real-world security policy, computer security models and technical security mechanisms).

The book is focused, fluff-free (to the point of being terse) and up-to-date as of Sep 2001. If you are an IT consultant or a health care IT staff member, especially with direct HIPAA support responsibilities, this is an essential reference.

Great and easy to read HIPAA reference

HIPAA@IT Essentials book is about half as long as Roy Rada's other HIPAA book - HIPAA@IT Reference: Health Information Transactions, Privacy, and Security
ISBN: 1901857050

And, as its name implies, covers the essentials of HIPAA. Those needing to get a quick look at HIPAA should definitely read HIPAA@IT Essentials.

Those who need a more in depth look at HIPAA should read this title in addition to HIPAA@IT Reference.

OK so I'm done with my 4 days of rotating nights and have time to make this post. During that time I had a chance to read Clicks, Hits and Misses by Jon Olsen not once but twice.

First I would like to say that prior to this book I had never read a book cover to cover who wasn't written by Dr. Seus. Yes this is a complete compliment. I hate to read!!

During my read it brought back alot of old marketing memories. From the beginning of banner navbars to the rise and fall of dailypays. This book covers alot of the early and somewhat current history of TE as we don't know them today. It goes into his reasoning why promoting yourself is just as if not more important then promoting your product.

This is well worth the $25 investment if you are serious about promoting yourself online. His message is loud and clear and if you missed it the page before he'll repeat it again and again until you get it.

His plan works not only for TEs but for any business or life in general. No I'm not spilling the beans here invest in the book and put what he says into practice. You are guaranteed to succeed in business and in life! Find out why you won't get rich in 3 months off promoting someone else.

I do have some issues with some points he makes but he openly admits he's ok with people disagreeing with him. Hopefully as this book is passed around and read we can have some good open discussions here. My only real disappointment with this book is that Jon doesn't come with it to talk about why he thinking that or why he does or doesn't like this.

For those of you who don't understand why people around Jon are succeeding and succeeding big this book explains it all.

Bravo Mr. Olsen at the very least you have given me a few new tools to arm myself with in the TE industry. Not only as a TE owner but as a surfer as well.

I was riveted from the first page until the very last few pages that were left blank for "notes."

This is the de-facto Hollywood "it" guide listing anyone that has ever been a remote fringe player with one very minor film credit to Brian "Any-Other-Good-Books-For-Me-Graydon" Grazer of Imagine Entertainment.

I must confess, I often wonderered how half these people pay their rent on a monthly basis when you look at their credits.

If you're a writer, actor, director, cinematographer, producer, editor, essentially any hollywood job that ends with an "r" then you'll want to buy a copy of this book to to know whom to avoid.

Now in its 51st edition, the Hollywood Creative Directory certainly lives up to its rubric as the "phone book to Hollywood." (Another fitting slogan might be "everything you always wanted to know about contacting everyone you always wanted to know.") The main section lists film and television companies throughout the United States, including street and email addresses, phone and FAX numbers, and the names of top executives. It also provides recent credits for each company, as well as projects that are in pre-production and development. Another section gives similar information, with expanded staff data, for many network television shows and those of a few other channels like HBO and the Cartoon Network. Data are also provided for all the state film commissions and for agencies from Actor's Equity to the Writer's Guild. It is updated three times a year.
Although essential to those in the entertainment industry, the Hollywood Creative Directory will be useful to other readers as well. --Library Journal, 2004

Homicide Investigations, by LeMoyne Snyder

LeMoyne Snyder is a member of the AMA and the ABA. The majority of serious crimes are committed by career criminals who are often identified by "lines of information". The majority of homicides are not committed by professional criminals. Scientific training is needed to distinguish homicides from suicides. This book was written to improve police investigations by preserving evidence so it is neither contaminated or destroyed, and to tell how to get scientific assistance to prepare a case for court. August Vollmer said it should be required reading for all policemen (p.vii). [Readers of true crime and mysteries could also benefit.] In the `Preface' LeMoyne Snyder said there were few organizations in the US or Canada like the medicolegal institutes in Europe and Latin America to investigate violent deaths [as of the 1940s]. The purpose of this book is to provide practical plans of procedure to adequately investigate deaths for those without scientific training. Each chapter contains a brief section on the medical aspects to aid a coroner prior to an autopsy and avoid serious errors of omission or commission. The `Acknowledgments' thank the many who contributed to this book, especially the group from Harvard Medical School. Erle Stanley Gardner also contributed (his novels often used little-known medical facts). Chapter 20 explains why this book was written. A dead body was found in a kitchen. No notes were made, no photographs taken, no search for fingerprints or other evidence. The autopsy was perfunctory. The crime scene was cleaned up. When a suspect was arrested the lack of evidence set him free. If only they knew what to do!

Chapter 5 discusses the identification of dead bodies, and tells of one case where Snyder recognized a dead friend after an apartment fire. The next day he found his friend was in fact alive (p.51)! A lip print can identify a person ("The Case of the Crimson Kiss"). A pelvis identifies the sex of an skeleton (p.62), and can indicate the age (p.63). Chapter 7 discusses gunshot wounds. Typically wounds of entrance are neat round holes. Wounds of exit are larger, ragged, torn, and bloodier (pp.106-107). Pages 113-116 note the effects of "tattooing". Chapter 13 deals with poisoning. It is very important to have an accurate history of the events preceding death to provide a clue to the type of poisoning. If a poison does not work other means may be used. Chapter 19 tells of the popular fallacies about murder. "Murder will out"? The number of unsolved homicides is enormous. The murderer rarely returns to the scene of the crime. A gunshot wound through the heart does not always cause instant death. Photographs can lie depending on the lens, the height of the camera, the type of film, or the distance from the object. Can a fortune teller give valuable information? Snyder knows of no such cases. A dead man can tell a tale if there was care and diligence in the investigation and the laboratory tests.

[This is from the 1950 edition.]

I find this forensic manual to be very informative and absolutely indepensable not only for criminal investigators and coronors, but also serious crime buffs.

The books is profusely illustrated with graphic details of what to look for in discovering a cadaver which has either been mutilated, drowned in water, burnt with fire or killed with bullets.

The rich description of different homicides from many perspective make the book a source of constant reference to all those who are concerned with untimely death investigations.

This reference manual should not be considered as gory as homicide investigations are not pleasant affairs but for coroners, police officers, life insurance agents and last but not the least, serious crime buffs who want to read factual information. Go for it though the price may be a bit stiff.
There is no other homicide manual like it ever written...!

An indispensible source of death investigation both in word and photo. Murder is murder and even though written decades ago, the basics of evidence gathering and methodologies given will help the 'new' homicide investigator, ... as well as revisiting the 'tried and true' for the seasoned slueth. Kinda pricey, but worth every penny! This book will be one of the most referred to sources your home or station's library will hold.

What else can I say, for the first time in over 4 months I can finally breath and smile in the mornings. I thought our case was to tough for this technique, so far we had been implementing something very similar and we had seen some minor changes of attitude, so we made the some adjustments to adopt this plan and WOW wat a change, our Foster child, soon to be adopted changed from one day to another, it is liek something clicked on him. He woke up in the morning without complaining and got ready for school. WE DID NOT HAVE TO REPEAT OURSELVES, not once. Every parent, foster parent, adult should read this book.

I was skeptical at first. The day before I bought this book, I cried for 2 hours after my daughter left the house to go with her father. My boyfriend asked me for about the 5th time, have you looked to see if there are any books written that would help you with this discipline problem you are having with your daughter? So, I went to the bookstore and bought Larry's book on Smart Discipline. The Smart Discipline process worked for me because it helped me to know what the rules are in my home. Sound too simple? I am a single mother, whose 10 year old daughter spends 1/2 time with her father each week. He is the disciplinarian, I was not. I was so glad to see my daughter when she would arrive back with me, that I had no control over her behavior. She is not one of those easy children to raise. She has a definite mind of her own and seems to thrive on stepping over the line and then watching the fireworks. There were countless mornings where I would go to work feeling guilty for how the early morning had gone trying to get her ready for school. Then there were the evenings with homework! I started Smart Discipline with my daughter about four weeks ago. She didn't like it at first and tried all of the behaviors Larry said she would, to try to get me to stop. It is not easy to hold fast when you are used to giving in all of the time, but it pays off. Last week she had no X's! And, she was proud of it. She suggested that maybe we didn't need to do the chart anymore. Ha! I told her I thought we did. She seems more at ease, knowing where the line is consistently. And, I know I am more relaxed. Now I won't tell you it will be a piece of cake. It is not. But, I will tell you that reading Larry's book, saved me and my daughter from endless days of fighting over silly stuff like whether or not she was going to take a shower or brush her teeth. With the problems I was having now, my thoughts about what she was going to be like at 15 were not good. Now I see a better future for us. If you feel like your child is out of control, and want to do something about it, read this book.

Not that I disagree with the author. As far as discipline concerned, this book offered wonderful method for behavior modification that I would gladly apply.

However, this book doesn't cover psychology of children (which is exactly my intention of buying the title) nor give you understanding of their behavior.

If you are looking for simple and ready-to-use method of disciplining your children, this book is for you. But if you are looking for deeper parents-children relationship, you need to find elsewhere.

Not so much of "How I did it", but more of "How you can do it", which is actually more important.

Aimed at selling your software in the mass market, gives lessons and ideas for selling through publishers and superstores, but not much about selling direct, especially on the web, maybe next printing revision.

Lots of good ideas, and if you haven't started on your software idea yet, this book will make you want to start.

Very easy reading, and thin too! Good for the midnight programmer / day tripper.

IN A NUTSHELL: DESPERATELY NEEDS TO BE UPDATED

Quicksilver hasn't changed as fast as computers and a chameleon couldn't keep up with personal computing over the last twenty years. Therefore, why should one be surprised to find this wonderfully insightful how-to personal computing handbook, a bit obsolete.

The problem with this text is simply that it needs to be made into a new edition, since reading through it leaves an anxious kind of nostalgia as though all of this happened about 100 years ago.

WHAT IT IS ALL ABOUT: BEFORE WINDOWS 2000 - USB - BURNING CDs & BROADBAND INTERNET CONNECTIONS

Accepting the fact that this book, featuring Windows 95, modems, old fashioned serial port connections and the like could never have been published before being a bit obsolete, it is still useful to people just getting the hang of personal computers -- like my 86 year old mother. In most cases, whatever computer they have or have had will be around there household as long as it works. So Windows 2000 and other newer applications may not be essential or even relevant for the Grandma Bunny in your lives.

HELPFUL FOR BASIC HOME COMPUTING INCLUDING INTERNET COMMUNICATION VIA A MODEM

Everything in this book is easily understood and comes with a lot of illustrations and practical advice. In essence, this book can act as a surrogate computer tech for people who have recently decided to delve into personal computing for the internet and possibly to communicate with family - long distance. Everything you need, including a handy CD to plug into your PC comes with this book and it can be quite a security blanket while your getting started. Even a troubleshooting section is included a covers most of the most likely problems in computing along with most of the solutions that may be predicted. Though broadband connections and burning CDs are not even mentioned here, most people just getting into PCs are probably getting the internet via a modem and aren't thinking about burning CDs yet.

IN 2000 THIS TEXT WAS $49.95

Writing letters, using Windows Works, PowerPoint and other Windows programs are illustrated and reinforced by the CD that is included. For people that are not in need of the cutting edge applications and programs this book and the helpful CD that is included is a real steal today at just $1-2 plus S&H. It is also highly available from public libraries, which is where I found the copy I have read.

BOTTOM LINE: A UPDATED EDITION IS SORELY NEEDED BUT THIS IS STILL A USEFUL AID

I purchased this book for my senior parents who have in the past year bought not one, but two new computers. Brave as they are, computer jargon is new to them, and sometimes I am hard pressed to help them out long distance. It was great to find this book that looks SO MUCH like the red Reader's Digest Do-It-Yourself book that has occupied my father's bookshelves for as long as I can remember. That familiarity is bound to feel something like climbing a new mountain in a pair of comfortable old jeans.

Review Date: 2000-10-13
As a technophobe whose spine turns to syrup when I encounter video machine instructions or, worse still, who feels positively assaulted by those iniquitously obscure computer manuals, I was delighted to have been given this lucid new computer book.

And, having completed a few of the useful but easy projects, my enthusiasm transmuted into gratitude and respect, for HOW TO DO JUST ABOUT ANYTHING ON A COMPUTER is the most invaluable and accessible book of its kind I've ever seen, designed for those who dislike obscurity and who, conversely, enjoy clarity, lack of prententiousness and extreme utility.

Such excellence of communication is the Reader's Digest hallmark, and this magnificent book is a premier example of a story well told - and a superb guide to unleashing your computer's awesome power.

As you turn its pages, you are taken on a vivid tour that makes your computer your servant rather than your master. It, literally, puts you in the pilot's seat. No longer will your home computer merely be used to churn out those tedious Christmas Round Robins, but you'll find that it will, with the aid of this book, sprout wings and whisk you into the New Millennium with a host of engaging projects.

Now you can engage your wider family with an impressive full-colour family magazine instead of the Round Robin. And it will be enhanced by the inclusion of home-scanned photographs of little Sally's first walk. Within minutes you'll be turning out professional letterheads, creating menu planners or eye-catching CVs. Indeed, as the title suggests, you and your family will now be able to turn out 'just about anything'. Amazingly, this book shows you how to use your computer to compose music, paint pictures and much more!

You'll be taught how to use Internet - in minutes rather than hours! - and shown how to do historical research. It will lead you step-by-step (and, thankfully, picture by picture) through such arcane obscurities as how to inject more 'oomph' into your PC, how to maximise disc space and how to chase away those naughty viruses.

This book does everything a major and thoroughly entertaining computer course would do - and is suitable not only for the beginner but also for the middle-weight and the advanced user. As a face-to-face course could cost thousands of dollars, the value of this book is, accordingly, immense.

And in comtemplating the myriad of uses readers would find for this book, I thought at once of how teachers would find it invaluable, for they are always seeking clear and well-organised classroom material. This book is ideal for them - not only for instructional use - but also as an essential inclusion in every school or college library.

The Reader's Digest have a knack with language and have found a formula for reaching the great, vibrant majority of mankind. This book exemplifies these skills, for it is as accessible and as appealing to ten-year-olds as it is to post-docs. Created, I'm told, partly in response to the growing need of baby boomers to learn skills they missed in their youth, this comprehensive book will surely satisfy their needs handsomely.

Congratulations, Reader's Digest, for opening the doors to the wonderful world of computers for the vast mass of mankind - and for having so sensitively considered the fears of technophobes!

I read your book and find it quite enjoyable. While most computer books are boring, yours is not. I hope you will do another someday.

Sandy Berger is one of us. She understands that not all of us are computer geeks, yet nearly all of us have or will soon have a computer. This book is written in easy to chew bytes and makes the process of purchasing and maintaining a computer system something other than a horrible experience.

This book is a great way to discover what all the interplanetary terms and acronyms salespeople smirkingly throw at you while wandering around a computer store. SCUZZI? Local Bus? PCMCIA slots? Flash BIOS? The average buyer knows not of these things. I liked the way this book takes you by the hand and gently guides you through the maze of the computer world.

I'm a self-taught, read-as-you-go, experiment-at-will designer and have learned software without professional guidance. And there is much basic computerese I have missed along the way. My suggestion would be for all of you out there who are either considering purchasing a computer system or have one but are fairly clueless as to REALLY understanding what you have at your fingertips, to purchase this book immediately, read it from cover to cover, and sit back smugly with a cup of coffee, secure in the knowledge that you now are at least as smart as your computer.

Easy reading and personally empowering...

Can this be a 'serious' computing guide? Yes, it is. Sandy weaves lots of clear-spoken, practical help for the layperson with a very inspiring view of what computing can do to expand your world. The title does indeed capture the essence. We teach at-home computing for Seniors; this book paves a nice path for our work.

Like any large Government organization, the military has it's own ways of doing things. And to complicate matters, the way you may find a person in the Navy is not always the same, for example, for the Army or Air Force.

Richard and Debra Johnson provide all the goodies on how to find or get information on servicemembers...retired or active.

There is a wealth of information you can get and this book provides tips and tricks you may not even know about.

So if you're looking for a long lost relative, friend or would like to see your grandfathers service record from WWII, here is the resource book you NEED to do it all correctly! Includes addresses, fees, sample forms and other invaluable information!

Excellent Resource!!!

I have run the website Sgt. Mom's Place (recently partnered with Maingate.com) for approximately 4 years now and this book has been an excellent resource for me!! I constantly get requests to help someone find a lost friend or relative, others wanting the records for their father or relative from WWII, etc. I have used this book countless times to give these visitors the information needed to help them in their search. My thanks to the authors!! I will continue to buy the updated versions too so I can keep up to date on everything!
