Great Advice From The Master Of The Bard. Recommended Reading.

Sir Laurence Olivier offers advice for all aspiring actors. Written in 1984, five years before his death, the Master looks back on his 60 year career, dwelling mostly on the roles which made him famous: Hamlet, Macbeth, Henry V, Richard III, Othello, Shylock, Antony and Caesar. In his introduction to "The Great Shakespearean Roles," he talks at length about Shakespeare and how "I wish to God I could have met him, talked to him-but most of all, listened." I agree wholeheartedly with him. I recommend this book to anyone who wishes to be an actor, director, writer and producer, like Kenneth Branagh is...and damn good he is too (please see my reviews on their excellent Shakespeare films). Rated G.

This should be on every actor's bookshelf...

O.k., so I began reading "On Acting" by Laurence Olivier for a terribly silly reason: he's dreamy. By the end of the book, though, I realized that he was much more than just a pretty face: he was a voice, a mind, a legend, a human. This book is essential for the actor who wishes to delve deeper into his/her craft. Sir Laurence writes with clarity and conviction, and at times it's as if he's speaking the words right to YOU. This book allows you to peer behind the performance of many of Sir Laurence's favorite characters: Richard III, Henry V, Shylock...and if you've ever had the privalege to play Hamlet, this book brings to life all of the emotions the actor feels before, during, and after "Hamlet".

I could go on forever about how great this book is. It's amazing.

Joanna Campbell Slan continues to publish books of real substance for scrapbookers. In ONE MINUTE JOURNALING she packs each page with colorful examples and explains how the page was made (with list of supplies!). Her journaling ideas are both practical and useful. I particularly loved the page she did for her friend who had lost the cat she loved. She created a wonderful effect with rubber stamps, punches, and vellum to make a window scene with a shadowy cat; I would never have thought of crimping vellum to create a window blind! I know I will use this book a lot.

Don't just use photos, tell the STORY behind them!

This is a WONDERFUL book! It's just beautiful and a real pleasure to look through. I'm a beginning scrapbooker and I must admit that I'm more into journaling than scrapbooking (I'm not very artistic or creative and I'm better with words than with cutting and pasting!).

You really get to know the author through this book. This is not just a book of ideas for scrapbooking - it's really about the philosophy behind scrapbooking, and the reason for it. The ideas are really good, and I learned a tremendous amount from this book. But I think even more than that, I was inspired to venture out in my own writing on my scrapbook pages!

My favorite pirate book, and we have most of them, I ordered 5 more to give as gifts, Easy to read, and absolutely darling pictures. Story line keeps us all amused. I changed the work, "hate " on the last page to dislike, since I would rather say dislike around my five year old.

They LOVED it!

I just stumbled upon this book and my 4 year old and 1 year old just loved it. It has a great story about a benign pirate who loses his gold tooth to a sea beast and then must search undersea to find it again. The illustrations are great. Best of all, it is a Step Up To Reading book. We read it to our 4 year old and the verse is constructed so that he can finish the sentences all by himself. It is his first real "participation" book, but it is not just exclusively for older preschoolers, as our 1 year old is equally interested in it as well. We really are pleased with this book and are looking for more just like it.

I originally thought that the main focus of this book would be about veterinarians, in fact, it covers the whole range of animal related careers, from working in a pet store to becoming a vet, and all the places you could go after you've become a vet. It has a very helpful chapter on the process of getting in to vet school. The financial aid and acceptance policies are different from those of other schools, and all fall under a single overseeing board for all the schools. All the schools are listed here along with contact info for each. All very detailed.

I read this book because Oprah truly inspires me and this book is a great read. She was not handed everything in her younger years and she overcame so much to get to be where she is now, and America is so lucky to have her!

Oprah was a young Afican American girl who was raised by her grandmother instead of her own parents. Oprah lived with her grandmother of her childhood until some teenage years. Oprah went to school where it was pretty much all American girls who looked at her different because of her color. Oprah helped her grandma everyday when getting home from school by delivering water around the town. Her grandma bought her a pair of shoes and she was only allowed to wear them while going to school and take them off as soon as she got home, she wore her hair either in a bun or in braids. when going to high school everything was different for her because she was smart and knew what she was going to do for living. She wasn't able to forgive her mother for what she had done to her.
I enjoyed this novel because I got to know more about Oprah's life.
I disliked the way she was treated by her mother and people at school.

My six year old son loves the origami paper because of it's fun and interesting colors. Unlike traditional origami paper which is colored on one side and white on the other, this paper is colored on both sides. Most of the paper has a dark side and a light side which makes it easier for beginners to know which way to fold. It is good paper and good fun!

Rare first-hand account of a strike and its aftermath
Helpful Votes: 6 out of 6 total.
Review Date: 1999-11-30
The 1987-8 strike in Jay, Maine, was one of the most important labor struggles of the 1980s. As in other major strikes, a local union (with two others in AL and PA) tried to hold the line against the corporate offensive. Against extremely long odds, the strikers held their ground for what their values and their community. There simply are not many accounts of strikes that are written by workers themselves. The closest that most books come, like the Betrayal of Local 14--which is also quite good, rely on oral histories by sympathetic academics or journalists. If you want to know what it means to hold the line against corporate America for 16 months, and then get sold out by your own people, and still believe in unionism, this book is for you.

Truth in advertising: I helped work on the book (by getting it typed up and edited it for typos).

Gorgeous Collection of Whimsical Tales
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2001-12-12
Inside this wonderful little book you will find these kinds of stories... A boy finds a magical feather in Frankfurt, Germany. A homeless woman sings a carol to an Irish girl on Christmas Eve (see the "read an excerpt" link here on Amazon). Two angels turn the Golden Gate Bridge into a cathedral. An older woman tells a story to her great granddaughter about a man who tried to capture angels on film with his camera. And a whole gaggle of silly goblins spread Christmas joy. If you want to put something a bit different under a friend's Christmas tree you should check out Paper Angels.

A thought-provoking collection of Christmas stories
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2001-10-10
Paper Angels is a thought-provoking, enlightening collection of holiday-themed stories. The stories, all of which are well written transport you at once to their varying locales. Through various themes and story lines, the author is able to convey heart-warming tales that are well suited to the holiday season.

Throughout the book, the author employs illustrative techniques which enable the reader to immediately identify and empathize with his characters. I have never read short stories that enveloped me so quickly within the first few sentences - usually it takes a couple of paragraphs or pages to engage this reader. This book is unusual in its scope and is well worth the price.

This book contains at least ten short stories of varying length, that could easily read out loud to children, but can also be enjoyed and appreciated by adults.

My favorite tales, (so far)are "Strings", which to summarize it rather unfairly, is about a girl and a sought after violin; "A Doll for Christmas", which is set in San Francisco and "To Hear the Angels Sing" which is set in Dublin. What makes the latter two tales so intriquing is that the author is able to quite naturally and unassumingly describe these two cities in such a way that we are there - on their streets and at home with the characters.

I highly recommend this book and look forward to more collections from this author.
