Great book to add to your library

I found this book in 2002, apparently about 15 years after it was printed, and it looks brand new. That's a combination of great craftsmanship and a lack of use. As for the latter - I don't know why it hasn't been used that much. It's a great reference book if nothing else. The summaries are great for even casual reading, as they are only a couple pages long for each woman mentioned (from the first century A.D. to the 20th century).

An exceptional historcial book on Christian women

An excellent biographical book on Christian women from the second to the ninteenth centuries. A revealing and personal account of their struggles, sacrifices and commitment to their families and Christian faith. A thorough and historical report on their missionary work at home and/or abroad. Enjoyable reading, perfect reference book or gift to share.

A Great Book for Toddlers

This book is about how Grover asked his friends to provide him things, like sticks, newspaper, rags, paste and string to make a kite. Each friend passed by would say, "Come on over, Grover, let's play...." Then Grover replied, " Not yet. May I have your...." Step by step, Grover gathered all the parts to make a beautiful kite. It is a great story to arouse the curiosity of a little child and guide him how to give declines and make requests politely. My 2.75 years old falls in love with this book and can even tell the story himself.

Have some fun with Grover and his friends!

We've probably read this book a zillion-million times and both my daughter and I still love it. Grover is asked to play, time and time again. Each friend is given a polite decline and asked to share their particular treasure. Grover takes each offering and builds a kite which is the delight of all his friends in the end. Such a wonderful lesson in sharing, politeness, and creating. A plus is that the text is easy to read for 4 - 6 year olds. A definate must have for your library.

The heart of his mystery, thematized and theorized
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2000-04-01
It may seem unlikely that this standard crime novel mystery should speak so knowingly of one of the poet's (and, indeed western culture's) most revered dramas, but Michael Innes' novel delightfully plays on the very themes that have drawn us to Hamlet by setting his murder in the midst of an amateur production of the play. The novel asks us about how we "read" each other as much as it asks us how we read any text. Can we ever know another person? Is there always another hidden truth? Let's hope they reprint this fine novel, which reads on so many levels, as fiction and criticism.

The best of Innes' complex detective novels

Review Date: 2000-08-02
This is my favourite Michael Innes detective novel (as opposed to detective story). It is complex, full of interesting characters and says a good deal about Shakespeare and Hamlet as well as the vanished world of the pre-second world war great house and aristocratic family. It is ironic, satirical and just plain funny at turns as well as scholarly and thoughtful. a good long read.

No gimmick here. Gores has written, first and formost, the best hard-boiled detective novel I've read in a long time. The historical portrait of Hammett only makes it that much more endearing.

In the best tradition of Hammett and Chandler

A wonderfully suspenseful novel that would make the real Dashiell Hammett proud. Gores did his homework well and it shows. I'm pleased to find that someone is carrying the torch for Hammett, and Chandler too. I've read all of their novels and this one rates right up there with the best. I look forward to the movie being released on DVD.

This book has remarkable, one of a kind, designs. Textures and spacing details were inspirational. The cards described are art pieces and do not look "home made". This book is a good addition to my library! My only slightly negative comment is that there are not enough designs spotlighted.

I knew nothing about papermaking, but after reading this book I felt inspired to make my own handmade paper. Perhaps the most thing I like is that I won't need any special devices to make wonderful handmade paper sheets, everything is available within a reach. This book is full of inspiring projects and photographs, it tells us how to recycle paper and how to make paper from.. vegetables! I never thought this is possible.

I really like this book.

I'm making flowers from silk cocoons and there remains tiny bits of trashes. I want to make silk papers from these cocoon trashes, searched the net and found this book. Wow, it's really interesting. This project widen the meaning of "paper." The method is like making felt with silk fiber.

I tried traditional way to make Japanese paper "Washi" with certain results. However Kath Russon's method is easier and more beautiful.

Also contains interesting projects such as making 3D objects and silk leaves. This method is applicable to other fibers such as cotton wool, jute and flax.

This is an inspiring and informative book which gives clear step by step instructions on making silk paper. On reading the book we discover the beauties of silk paper. The layout and photography of the book itself make it a beautiful book to own. The text is lucid and, at times, humerous and the reader really gets to know the personality of the author, Kath Russon whose work and business inspired the writing of this book. The book tells you everything you need to know to make your own silk paper and the final chapter provides ideas and inspirations of how to use the paper you have created. It deals with an unuaual but fascinating medium. This book makes an ideal Christmas gift. I can imagine that silk paper making will become the popular hobby of the new millennium.

The Future and Beyond
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2002-07-23
One issue that I grapple with frequently is the difference between "art" and "illustration". In the world of fine art illustrators are generally looked on as an inferior breed by the critics. In his introduction to "Hardyware" David A. Hardy expresses his reproof at modern art's derision of anything beautiful or representational.

This got me thinking. If SF art is "mere illustration" as an art critic would say, what about all those historical paintings of heaven and hell, the last judgement and armageddon? Critics seem to love those.

But I digress. SF art does have its place, and it plays an important role. The main body of "Hardyware" gives us a glimpse of the possibilties that await us in the future. If things turn out properly and we don't destroy ourselves, our descendents will become great builders with the potential to conquer the stars. Most of the artwork in this collection is done in gouache and acrylic, although more recently the artist has turned to digital media.

We see visions of the past as well as the future. One of my favourite pieces is a scene from "The War of the Worlds". I remember seeing that image on a cover jacket when I was 12, although I didn't know who the artist was back then. The image of a dinosaur looking up at a descending asteroid is hauntingly grim.

I often think SF artists are underrated. Though they are often proved wrong, their visions provide a valuable contribution to the development of our civilization, giving inspiration to those who have the ability to make fantasy a reality.

An old friend
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2005-08-21
I owned the original, bought around 1962 or so.

I've always wondered what happened to it. No doubt it was ripped off by a friend who foresaw better than I that someday it would be revered as a classic.

At the time it seemed the precursor of a tide of similar publications, some of which, one hoped, would improve upon it with more discriminating content.

Nope. It was a one-shot, and this, perhaps as much as anything else aout it, escalated the literary stock of its often trashy writing.

My five-star review is a tribute to both its uniqueness and my nostalgia for the Beat sensibility it represented that was so formative to me.

They should have reissued it on newsprint.

An excellent reprint of a true literary classic.

This millennium edition of Leslie's One Shot Review is an excellent reprint returning a classic to new audiences. Originally published in 1960, this volume provides work by some of the finest 20th century authors from Allen Ginsberg and Kenneth Koch to Terry Southern. Also included: Fidel Castro's 1960 address to the U.N. This millennium edition contains a narrative poem by the author commenting on the origins of the original Hasty Papers. A keepsake literary work in an oversized presentation, packed with black and white photos and illustrations.
