Doris Bibbs Johnson has written a moving, honest account, in novel style, of a family's struggle with their mother's mental illness, and how it impacted on each and every one of them in diverse ways. From child abuse at the hands of their grandmother, to struggling with their mother's growing paranoia and father's heavy drinking, the reader joins the narrator on an often painful journey through childhood.

WRAP THIS WONDERFUL ADVENTURE IN BROWN PAPER!

Some will immediately think "adorable" and the little girl Jessica is just that -- living a Wendy-like adventure in reverse. Grandparents reading this book will doubtless tell stories of their favorite dolls and/or Indians or trains as they share these illustrations of precious antique toys. WHAT FUN! And how lovely!

Though definitely OVERSIZE (even for a grandpa's lap) I knew the brown paper format would appeal to me. Jessica in her red plaid pj's walked right into my heart thanks to the London & Cornwall team of author Catherine Allison & artist Neil Reed.

I picked up "Brown Paper Teddy Bear" because of the sweet cover of a teddy bear wrapped in brown paper wrapping and a red ribbon. Jessica discovers the teddy bear and he comes to life and takes Jessica on a delightful magical journey. The illustrations are exquisite and the oversized book makes the reader enjoy the pictures even more. Truly a wonderful book with an ending that will tug at your heart. I bought it for my seven year old son who loves stuffed animals.

A brilliant collection of essays. Excellently selected, well edited and full of ideas which demand attention. Perhaps the net effect can best be summed up as scraping away of some old and spreading out smoothly of fresh clean gomaya - the result is a whole new set of answers, questions and provocations. Most of us will have copies of some of the papers, but almost certainly not all and certainly not in such a handy format. This book is an essential item on any buddhologist's bookshelf (come to think of it perhaps Greg can send his niece - see the nice anecdote in his introduction - a copy so she will learn what a good buddhologist does)

Down to Business.

This book is every bit as excellent as Schopen's prior publication. He has an incredible knack for taking what you'd think are boring, dusty details and breathing life into them in order to really explore what Buddhism was in India. This guy never assumes anything, and you never come away from his books with the same view of Buddhism as you had before. And he writes with clarity and verve, which is so painfully rare in the scholarly world today.

If you enjoy skillfully-crafted character studies, this is the perfect book for you. You will fall in love with the town and people depicted in this excellent read. My only disappointment with this book was that it ended. I found myself missing the characters and wishing I had lived then and could have known them in person. My daughter actually introduced me to the book when it was on her required reading list for an English class when she was in high school. It is a book worth having in your collection to read over and over again every few years. When you read it again, it's like meeting up with an old friend who you haven't seen in years, but can converse with like you had never been apart.

I used this book to generate additional projects for my honors geometry students. The students all loved it. They were able to create beautiful objects that also had real mathematical significance. I have also used this book with friends. Creating these objects with others is a great way to initiate mathematical conversations with "non-mathematicians". "Real" mathematicians also dig it. If you enjoy math or think you might enjoy math, try this book.

Anyone can create the polyhedra in this book with a little gummed mailing tape and some time on your hands. I have really enjoyed this book.

A Good "Look For" Book
Helpful Votes: 11 out of 11 total.
Review Date: 2001-01-22
I feel a little silly writing a review of a book that is so out of print you may never find it again. But on the off-chance it comes back into print, this little write-up will be waiting for it.

Aside from the silly title (there are only two confirmed Cajun characters in the whole book and not a single cajun night), "Cajun Nights" is a wonderful book and a wonderful introduction to a short-lived series.

Kit Franklyn has been hired as a suicide investigator by the Orleans Parrish medical examiner, Andy Broussard, a no-nonsense, lemon-ball-popping eccentric. Her hiring is fortuitous, as New Orleans has been suffering a rash of murder-suicides that may or may not have been caused by a centuries-old curse.

Author D.J. Donaldson writes New Orleans as though he loves it - is descriptions of locations and familiar landmarks are careful and respectful. Using Kit, a relative newcomer to the city, her is able to introduce us to New Orleans in a way that is fresh and doesn't come off sounding like a travelogue.

Cajun Nights is an entertaining book that will keep you happily turning pages until the end. The plot seems far-fetched at first, but makes perfect sense by the time we reach the final page and Donaldson writes well without bogging us down in needless details.

New Orleans - Sultry Nights, Swinging Jazz & Violent Murders

D. J. Donaldson's "Cajun Nights" is sadly out of print, HOWEVER, it is quite easy to buy a used copy. Try Amazon's Marketplace sellers, if you're interested. I read a review for the book, and since I always like a good mystery and love fiction set in New Orleans, I bought it. This is a taut, suspenseful novel, filled with interesting characters, a plot that will keep you riveted and just a tad of the supernatural. Remember, Voodoo arrived in New Orleans after a revolution in Haiti brought the Free People of Color to the city. Besides, if the setting is the Big Easy, magic must be involved. Author Donaldson has also managed to capture the charm of the bayou, the French Quarter, and lots of additional local color.

In New Orleans, 1738, a wealthy landowner, Albair Fauquel, and his Haitian slave, Malaqua, were hanged for using the dark arts to cast a spell over a prominent member of society. Fauquel's victim, apparently bewitched, murdered his family and committed suicide. Just before his death, with the noose chafing his neck, Fauquel cursed the city's citizens for wronging him. "But, I tell you this, one day I will return and right this wrong as I did the other. And the streets of this city will run with blood as friend slays friend, fathers slay their children, and rampant suicide sends the souls of men by the hundreds to everlasting hell. Beware the songs you loved in youth."

Present day, New Orleans - Dr. Kit Franklyn, a psychologist and the county's first suicide-research investigator, was just hired by Orleans Parish's Chief Medical Examiner, Andy Broussard, an aging gourmand who believes that a good meal with fine wine is better than sex, but prefers his work to either. He is superb at what he does, which includes detecting. Kit work will involve compiling psychological profiles of the decedent in cases where the physical evidence does not enable the examiner to determine whether death was accidental or suicide.

On the first day of Kit's job, she and Chief Broussard are called to the scene of a fire at a private home. It appears that Barry Hollins, a loving husband and father had just set himself ablaze, killing his wife, two year-old daughter, and mother-in-law in the process. It was not the mother-in-law's fault. He really liked her - REALLY! Hollins had no history of unhappiness, depression or instability. Within a short period, two more violent murder-suicides occur. Franklyn and Broussard are stumped at the sudden bizarre behavior. When Kit asks the deputy medical examiner to pull up some nationwide murder-suicide statistics, the results are startling, to say the least. Eerily, clues begin to appear which link the historic past to the present. Murder attempts are made against the two protagonists. And I couldn't figure out what was going on for the life of me. I was shocked at the "who" in the whodunit.

I have just ordered used copies of two other Andy Broussard/Kit Franklyn mysteries. So the book must be good.

Tired of the cards at the mall stores that never have the right image or the right greeting? Do you want a simple yet beautiful way of expressing your feelings? Or maybe you're just tired of the mass production of various holiday cards - if so, this book is for you.

You don't have to be "crafty" but it does give you a slight edge in making the cards. Gillian Souter provides clear, concise instructions on how to make various cards from making the paper (not necessary but an interesting sideline) to cutwork to paper sculpture> There's rubber stamping and decoupage as well as needlepoint included. Don't let that scare you off - with the directions clearly spelling out what you need and how to proceed, you'll be making beautiful individualized cards in no time.
You don't have to stick with the patterns - for instance, the satin tulips are beautiful, but with the information provided, you could make other flowers.
I recommend this book highly for those who want to show their individuality by producing a card that will be displayed and praised for years to come.

Thisis a book all about making greeting cards and stationary. Best of all, this book contains over 45 ideas for creating these! Sure, you may say, I've seen books that claim to have over 45 ideas before, but when you open them , they have considerably less. Usually around 35-40 ideas. NOT THIS BOOK! It is a virtual cornucopia of ideas! This is the book to buy if you are looking for 45 or more ideas on how to create greeting cards, stationary or greeting card and stationary accessories. If you area looking for a book with just a few ideas easily digestible, then stay away!

This wonderful collection of paperdolls illustrated by Tom Tierney is a lovely addition to any Carmen Miranda fans collection. The "Lady in the Tutti Fruitti Hat" is wonderfully memoralized in this book with 31 of her most colorful, spectacular and outrageous costumes from the "Brazilizan Bombshells" Hollywood films from the 1940s. One of the most recognizable popular icons of the World War II era and a beloved figure to her Brazilian homeland, this book also includes a short biography and filmography. If you are a movie buff, a costume designer or a new fan of Carmen's you will be delighted with the collection and accuracy of these drawings.
