This is a great book to get back to the basics of strengthening your core and working on stretching. There are a lot of photos, and the explanations of exercises are very informative and easily understood. Great introduction. This book is particularly good for dancers at all levels

Emphasis on ballet over Pilates and yoga, but well done

I've been aware of this book since it came out. Molly Weeks was one of the participants on the original Method show several years ago, and I was not surprised that she, too, had developed an exercise system that combined yoga, Pilates and ballet as Jennifer Kries did a few years ago. When this came out, I only briefly skimmed it and it didn't grab me, so I didn't read it very carefully. However, a few days ago I decided to give this one a chance, and now I am impressed.

Unlike most of the other Pilates-writers out there, Weeks' does not have a background in performance. Her exposure to ballet is through classes- the way most of her readers might hope to be exposed as well. The same can be said of her yoga experience, although she is a fully certified Pilates teacher, through Romana no less. In other words, she has the credentials to come up with a system.

The system itself is Warm Up, Core Pilates, Stretching, Hips and Buttocks, Floor Ballet, Back, Standing Ballet, Ballet Combinations, Hatha Yoga and Cool Down. As you can see, the majority of the work is influenced by ballet, although the Hips and Buttocks and Floor Ballet segments combine techniques from the other disciplines as well. Although all of the segments are well-thought out and illustrated, the ones that I found most helpful were the Floor Ballet and Ballet Combinations. I have not seen many of the exercises from the Floor Ballet segments elsewhere, and I find them to be really effective. The Ballet Combinations were both new and inspirational. Although I wouldn't go so far as to say that I felt like a dancer doing them, these exercises did provide that element that I've been looking for in my own exercise routine, and I look forward to doing them again.

This is a great supplement to your other workout regimens, but I feel it can also stand on its own.

19th Century Ballet Made Easy

I can't imagine a more painless way of learning about 19th century ballet than Tom Tierney's Ballet Stars of the Romantic Era. True to history, the four ballerinas have the matching costumes they wore for their famous Pas de Quatre -- when all four shared a single stage. Careful details include Marie Taglioni's trademark pearl necklace: she thought her neck was too long, and always wore a pearl choker to disguise it. The four ballerinas share a partner, dancer/choreographer Jules Perrot, so there are five dolls in all. My dancer daughter has had these paper dolls for years, and still treasures them.

This is one of Tom Tierney's prettiest and most feminine books. The plates are worthy of being framed, and I'm sure that most aspiring ballet dancers would love to have them on the wall in their rooms.
Until I bought this book, I'd only heard of Lola Montez, but more for her exploits than her dancing. Reading the notes accompanying the dolls was a fascinating introduction to the ballet world of the nineteenth century.

Benefits for the Workplace of the Future

From Noteworthy Books in Industrial Relations and Labor Economics, Princeton University (July 2004):
"The essays in this volume examine how benefits and compensation packages will respond to the need for economic restructuring, demographic shifts and changes in the role of government versus private sector. The chapters in the first section deal with developments in the future workplace and outline the implications for benefit coverage and design. The authors in the second section look at challenges to benefits and compensation design such as recession and economic volatility, the interaction of business conditions with the slower labor growth predicted for the future, and the benefit effects of the evolving labor-management relationship. The case and sector studies in the last three chapters provide insights into specific company and sectoral practices."

The future workforce promises to be quite different from that of the past. As global markets grow more closely integrated, companies are having to reinvent the workplace, which requires more skilled, more reliable, and more flexible employees. This book explores how anticipated workforce and workplace changes will alter the form and design of employee benefits.

The First of the Philo Vance Mysteries
Helpful Votes: 8 out of 9 total.
Review Date: 2002-02-23
This book is the first of Van Dine's mysteries, and it introduces Van Dine's sleuth, Philo Vance. Vance is a wealthy, but rather cynical, connoisseur in the arts and finer things of life. He has another hobby, though, helping the New York assistant district attorney solve complex murders.

This book focuses more on Philo Vance, showing the reader what to expect in the mysteries to follow. S.S. Van Dine, whose real name was Willard Hunting Wright, while writing mysteries, was also an art critic, and it shows in this book. The whole first chapter concerns Vance's view of the art world.

The plot involves that of Alvin Benson who found dea sitting in a chair in his living room. He still has a book in his hand and seems at first glance to be enjoying a leisurely read. It is up to Philo Vance to help the police discover who shot him at close range with a Colt 45 pistol.

The book is rather dated but is also an enjoyable read.

S.S. Van Dine is a pseudonym for Willard Huntington Wright. THE BENSON MURDER CASE is the first Philo Vance mystery. Vance is an amateur detective and young aristocrat who is a close friend of the new District Attorney, John F.X. Markham. Vance mentions to Markham that he may enjoy going with him on a murder investigation. When Alvin Benson is found slain, Markham invites Vance to join him while he inspects the crime scene. The story is set in a simpler New York City of the roaring twenties before the 1929 stock market crash. This may be the best of the mystery novels written by Van Dine.

Inspiring study of the wild and crazy side of Kabir
Helpful Votes: 10 out of 11 total.
Review Date: 2006-07-15
Most other books that I've read about Kabir emphasize the devotional (bhakti) side of Kabir. Hess and Singh have done a great service by showing us his wild and crazy side. The rough side. The tell it like it is side.

Kabir decried remaining within rigid religious boundaries. God is beyond. And more: beyond beyond. Yet organized religions such as Sikhism and the Sant Mat movement have tried to make Kabir one of their own. This book demonstrates the impossibility of confining Kabir in any theological structure.

Hess' Introduction is marvelous. This academic can write clearly and passionately, while still preserving high scholarly standards. I've read most of the English books about Kabir. After finishing "The Bijak of Kabir" I finally feel like I've been given an honest glimpse of this great mystic who fearlessly urges us to experience the wild Mystery that transcends all attempts to cage it within religious conceptual systems.

I give this book 100 stars..

Kabir was an extraordinary oral poet whose works have been sung and recited throughout North India for half a millennium. He may have been illiterate ("I don't touch ink or paper, this hand never grasped a pen.") and he preached an abrasive, sometimes shocking, always uncompromising message that exhorted his audience to shed their delusions, pretensions, and empty orthodoxies in favor of an intense, direct, and personal confrontation with the truth.

Thousands of poems are popularly attributed to Kabir, but only a few written collections have survived over the centuries. The Bijak is one of the most important, and sacred book of those who follow Kabir.

Bill & Al's Excellent Adventure : A Paper Doll Book takes a humorous stab at the top dogs in the White House, the Clintons and the Gores, by casting them as punch-out paper dolls. If you're in the market for a gag gift, particularly for friends living overseas or anyone remotely interested in Federal politics, I would highly recommend this book. The wardrobes are great and you do not have to be highly literate or politically astute to enjoy it immensely. We received this book as a gift from friends in Washington DC and we use it as a coffee table book. Our Australian friends all get a charge out of it, and it reminds us that we probably aren't missing any serious political development with historical significance by living offshore. It's truly an argument for abstaining from voting in US Federal elections all by itself. I would recommend keeping this book 'out of reach' if there are any pre-pubescent male children living in your house, or run the risk of them developing crushes on the 'White House Wives'.

I don't know anything about the book or E. O. Wilson. But the service I received from the vendor was first class, it arrived on-time and I saved a ton of money on this book.

As we all know, E.O. Wilson is a giant of modern biology. Though his work has not always been quietly accepted, his ideas and opinions are undoubtedly an invaluble resorce to the world. In this huge book, Wilson presents what he believes are the 57 most important essays on the current state of Earth's biodiversity.

Being assigned summer reading, my teacher was convinced that I would love this book. He obviousely thought highly of it and so I began reading with an open mind. I'm so glad I did because the issues presented took my breath away. We are living in the middle of the largest mass extinction Earth has ever seen. Right now. These essays bring the reader completely up to speed on what is being destroyed, what efforts are being done to save the Earth, and what further efforts need to begin.

I can honestly say that my career path may have been steered more in the direction of biology after finshing Biodiversity. Everyone should read this book - I can garrentee that it will be a great enlightening experience.
