This carefully annotated collection of diary entries and letters is an excellent exploration of the Western response to the rise of the Nazi party and its policies, especially towards its Jewish citizens. It provides much information and insights that would not be present in general histories of the 20th century and even in more specialized histories of the period.

I have a personal and professional interest in mathematical origami. However, until reading this book, I had trouble finding math origami directions that are easy to follow. If you want to build geometric models, this book will not disappoint you. The directions are clear, and the illustrations help, too. But first go to AIMS website to compare the price of this book straight from the publisher.

"All God's Children Are Lost, but Only a Few Can Play the Piano" is an awkward title to a beautiful, inspiring book. Sheldon Kopp is one of the few authors of psychology books who manages to be both complex and inspiring. He will not settle for simple platitudes -- he forces the reader to embrace life, with all its suffering, mystery and paradoxes. He reveals the journey in all its richness without reducing it to the standard "10 Ways to Achieve Nirvana By Lunchtime" formula."In many ways, Kopp's own life (revealed through his books) was a journey to the simplicity of this book. His hard-won wisdom shines through here. Reading this book is like having a cup of coffee with a soul mate. Get this baby back in print!

Sheldon Kopp truly exemplifies an astute writer. Kopp proclaims his messages loud and clear in magical ways less dragging the reader through it. Begin reading this book like your are going on an unchartered trip somewhere with no instructions. You end up...Kopp's writing has impact. Share this book with all who possess an open mind, heart, and a sense of adventure. Favorite story: Shudra and Tennyson. Read it.

Since finding this book in the local library, we have kept it until we can buy a copy. The pictures are easy to follow, the products good, even for beginners, the terms clearly explained, and the range of models is good - lots of animals and boats. Let's hope the book is soon available again.
Excellent book for beginners! Bring it back!

My kid got hooked on origami in a big way last year and took out stacks of books from the local library. This was his absolute favorite and we are very disappointed that it is not available. It has beautiful pictures, very clear and easy to follow instructions, and directions for both classical origami models and original models. We also enjoyed reading the information included about the history and social significance of many models.

20th Century American Culture

A wonderfully nostalgic look at pop culture of the 20th century, this is as much a social history book of the 1930's through the early 1970's as it is a history of Drive In restaurants. Jammed pack in this 187 page "psuedo tome" is the history of fast food and how it evolved into what it's become today, as well as teen culture of the era, and how the automobile turned America into a mobile society and society's response.
Car hops (sometimes on roller skates), neon signs, original menus, advertisements...the author gives the reader the sense of being there, back in the 1940's, 50's, or 60's, cruising along in your car to the local hang out, and there were plenty throughout our great country: Sal's Hotdog Heaven, Blackie's Drive In, Pig Stand, Steak and Shake, Igloo, Chicken In The Rough, The Varsity, and so many more.
Mr. Witzel also gives us the histories of the many well-known fast food restaurants still in existance today, all who had their beginnings as Drive Ins: A & W, McDonalds, Bob's Big Boy, White Castle, and even the infamous Mel's Drive in from American Grafitti.
The photographs alone are worth the money, and there are hundreds of pictures throughout.
I guess if I had one complaint it would be that every time I look at this book I end up dragging the family out to our local drive in (Eddy's Drive In located in Harrison Township, Michigan - girls on roller skates, classic cars, and all!).

This book blends words and photography to take readers back to more relaxed days of the early to late 20th Century. The pictures alone are worth the price. It is apparent how much time, research, and effort Michael Karl Witzel contributed into the making of this book. I highly recommend it- especially for baby boomers and older, or someone who just wishes to visit a regrettably lost era of American history.

I purchased several of Tom Tierney's historical paper doll sets to augment my family history projects. I have 150 years of family photos which are mostly in black and white, of course, so it's great to see the period clothing in detail and in color. The paper dolls will add so much to my research and my family's appreciation of the historical times and stories. Although I intend to keep the paper dolls uncut, they are printed on card stock which would be easy to cut and not tear apart if well-cared for.

This entire line of paperdolls of each decade is delightful and educational. The costumes are marvelous and the little histories that go with the set add interest to the product. What I liked best about this Tierney series is that the set is a family grouping. That seems to make it all the more interesting.

I started buying Tierney's American Family series as a reference so that I can better imagine the typical people of a particular period. The more usual documenting of high fashion isn't useful for that purpose, although Tierney usually has a paper doll book for that, too. These are also in full color, whereas contemporary illustrations often are not. I have read costume designers who says that Tierney's books are very helpful to when trying to determine exactly what the customer wants. In this case, it's kind of a hoot for me to be looking at the dimly remembered clothing of early childhood. I wonder how many people buy these books not to play with the dolls, but because they are such a useful and economical reference source. As paper dolls, they look moderately difficult to cut out, owing to all the detail, if one is determined to leave no waste paper.
In these books, Tierney starts with a succinct and well-written description of the era. He creates a story about the family, usually includes three generations of moderately wealthy Americans so that he can display fashions typical of various age groups. He shows clothing suitable for a variety of leisure, work and dress-up occasions, usually including a wedding. Since he focuses on only one decade, they are more informative than most general costume reference books. Each costume has explanatory notes specifying such details as fabrics, hair-styles and precise time period. One of the boys has an extra head of hair for when he tries to adopt the Elvis look.
One disagreement with Tierney: I like the sack dress shown in plate 7!

This book is the most best paper doll book I've gotten by Tom Tierney so far and I have a lot Paper dolls that he made and I think that it is one of his best. In this book it shows three generation like most of the other paper doll books. The grandparents are Thaddeus and Matilde and their child is Benjamin and his wife is Lucinda. Lucinda and Benjamin's children are Clara,Annabelle, and the twins Clara and Elery. They also have an adopted child who is Lucinda's cousin's child. Because the men here are depicted as soldiers they dont have any clothes only army clothes similiar to Thaddeus's shown on the cover. But the women and the boy have four sets of beautiful clothes. It shows what they would wear for parties, riding, walks and all kinds of other things. With easy to read notes this is a great book and it would help you understand more about what people wore during the Civil War. This book is a MUST for paper doll fans and I HIGHLY recommend it.
I love this book

I am 12 years old, and I already have a collection of more than 25 paperdoll books. This a wonderful book. It includes the grandparents, Thaddeus and Matilde, their son Benjamin & wife Lucinda, & their children, Montgomery(18), Jean Marie(15), Annabelle(10) & twins Elery and Clara(5). It shows the family during the beginning of the war, and includes outfits for all occasions. My favorite is the ball dress for Jean Marie & the one for Clara. I HIGHLY reccomend this book.
