This is not your typical love-story. I'm the type of guy who is usually reading books of a technical nature, and for fiction I lean towards stuff like Vonnegut. But I really loved this book. A girl I know lent it to me while I was on a business trip - I cracked it open around 9 in the hotel to read a bit before I went to bed. I couldn't put it down - got very little sleep that night.

I bought this book back in 2003; it is a special limited edition with signatures of Lents' officers from which he served with. They are all hand- written in pen, with the author's signature as well.
I paid $100.for it and it was money well spent. Mr Hinchcliff was very thorough and made this piece of history intriguing, as well, as exciting; and I will keep this book with all of my other collectables.

Insightful Look at a Luftwaffe Ace!

Review Date: 2006-02-03
There haven't been many biographies of Luftwaffe experten published that can hold a candle to Peter Hinchliffe's book on Helmut Lent. Hinchliffe's research and insights make this book a must read.

By any standard, Helmut Lent was an exceptional young man. One of the Luftwaffe's top nightfighter aces, he was a wing commander at age 25 with decorations galore. Hinchliffe recounts with much detail the exploits that led to Lent's fame.

Yet Lent was also a devout Lutheran and it's fascinating to read of the run-ins Lent had with the Gestapo over his family's beliefs. Most biographies of experten relate that particular pilot's exploits but few venture into the areas Hinchliffe does. The result is a multi-dimensional portrait of what seemed like a decent, god-fearing man who, unfortunately, fought for the most evil empire ever to exist.

Hichliffe's text benefits from access to Lent family archival material and many first-person accounts from those who served with Lent. The text is complemented by dozens of rare photographs of Lent, his aircraft, comrades and opponents.

A fascinating read!

Peter Hinchliffe is one of my favorite authors. There are too few who have done the hard work necessary to present a fair and balanced view of selected members of the German armed forces of WW2, de-politicized. THE LENT PAPERS is typical of Peter's work, it gives you an "in the cockpit" assessment of the man who was, at the time, the top night-fighter pilot of the Nachtjagd. There is no long-winded, scholarly dissertation, just a straighforward biography. Great job Peter, great pilot, great book. Carter

Henry takes his loveable, unruly dog to obedience school. Henry is terribly nervous. Will Mudge sit on a puddle? Will he drool on the teacher's foot? Mudge might flunk dog school! At the end of the eight weeks Mudge and Henry must take the "Big Test". Henry and Mudge are top choice for my 8 year old son who is a reluctant reader. Mudge has definitely found a place in his heart! Short chapters, adorable pictures and funny story make this book a hit!

This is a very fun book with wonderful pictures drawn in pen and ink and watercolor. After seeing a very obedient dog walk by his house, Henry and his mom decide it might be a good idea to take Mudge--their big, slightly wild and sloppy dog--to obedience school. Henry is worried: "He thought Mudge might drool on the teacher's foot. Or sit on a poodle by mistake. Or not even stay awake long enough to do anything."

The book is funny and teaches kids some fundamentals about training dogs. If Mudge can do it, maybe your dog can do it too!
The book is rated at "level 2--reading with help" by the publisher, and it has enough repetition and short sentences for the beginning reader. However, the humor and great picture make an interesting as well as readable book!

Admittedly, I got this book because of Stephen Duncombe's essay on zine culture in which I am mentioned, but I did in fact read it from cover to cover and was fully absorbed throughout. The authors have taken on the difficult task of offering perspectives on what it all means to have a popular culture and to be a part of it. The danger, of course, lies in writing from such an academic perspective that the essays could become completely meaningless to anyone not an academic scholar. But, I am happy to say that the essays consistently maintain a level-headed, practical attitude and do not insist on meanings that could be seen as peculiar or irrelevant.

Instead, you get a comprehensive look at everything from pro-wrestling to talk shows, television sit-coms to zines, and much more. The writing is sensible and leaves it up to the reader to draw final conclusions. A general theme is to not take popular culture too seriously and to understand that as consumers, we have the power to shape it. Further, popular culture is not always what it seems and high-flying rhetoric is used by big business and politicians to manipulate consumers for profit. Of course, we know that, but the essays offer us clues as to the process and how we can be more aware of how we are being manipulated.

The book is a long read if you do so cover-to-cover. But the essays themselves read fast. Although some people may wish to read only some of them, I highly recommend the whole book as there are a lot of insights offered into the topics covered as well as bits and pieces of information that allow you to walk away feeling knowlegeable about the topics covered.

An outrageously eclectic collection of essays about the world we live in, finally turning a legible as well as legitimate critical eye towards our cultural organism - and some of the weird and wonderful sprouts. A book to take your mind off of the nasty habits of humanity (like war) and set you thinking about the wonderful weird stuff we do every day.

Why more people don't know his name is beyond me. Maybe its because of his haircut?

In all seriousness, reading the man's work is like waking up and realizing that you've been dreaming. He lifts the veil off the world we live in, the media stream that we swim in, and he illuminates its basic nature better than anyone I have ever read. He also has the great advantage of not being a "fogey", in other words he's not mystified by popular culture, he UNDERSTANDS it. He KNOWS why we like certain videogames and movies and doesn't berate the world for it, rather he simply looks at the underpinnings of those desires. Great stuff. Read all his works - and then visit VIDEOTOPIA because Professor Jenkins references it and it's cool.

Although the characters in this book are a little older than me, I was in my late forties in the late nineties, I can identify with the issues they talk about. I have a college degree and got married young and could never juggle all the pieces of my life the way I thought I was supposed to. This book makes me realize I wa snot alone.

This is a beautifully written to the heart and 'real'book. About 'us' women - strong of the heart, the mind and our bodies. We are survivors - we are mothers, sisters, grandmothers. We are beautiful in whatever shape, form and colour. I came away in tears when I read this book, a bit of sadness, happiness and inner strength - a powerful combination.

I could go on forever about how great this book is. Raskin is by turns witty, sincere, sarcastic, and cynical. The characters' lives and problems are very real, and they confront their problems (and each other) in ways that most women will find familiar. I actually first read this in college; young enough to be the daughter of any of the main characters. Nevertheless, I identified with them and their struggles. A must read for you and all your girlfriends.

This book is a great read for both newbies to the Romanovs as well as buffs. It is lushly illustrated with rare photos, first hand accounts from Gibbes as well as the children's other tutors, and gets into the imprisonment better than most books I have read about the Romanovs. Being the buff that I am (;)
I was not dissapointed, and i don't think you will be either.

This is a wonderful book that describes the last days of Czar Nicholas II and his family. The emphasis is on the children --- son Alexis and daughters Anastasia, Maria, Tatyana, and Olga.

The book is based on the recollections of the children's tutor, Pierre Gilliard, who accompanied them in exile for a time. It is filled with photographs, letters, and other memorobilia from Monsieur Gilliard's collection. These provide a delightful side to the tragic story of the last days of the Romanovs.

It is a pity that this wonderful book is out of print.

"The House of Special Purpose" is compiled from the papers of Charles Sydney Gibbes (or Gibbs), English tutor to the children of Tsar Nicholas II. J. C. Trewin did an excellent job of going through Gibbs' papers and combining them with published sources to form a fascinating narrative. The photographs, too, are well-chosen. The Russian revolution happens a third of the way through the book; however, Gibbs was with the family in their captivity in Siberia, and has interesting anecdotes and dimensions to add. One complaint is the lack of a proper bibliography. While "House of Special Purpose" was mostly based on unpublished sources, it would be nice to know at a glance what other sources Trewin consulted. (Sometimes sources are given in footnotes at the bottom of the page; other times they are not.) Similarly, an index might have been nice. However, these are both stylistic complaints. This is an interesting book, highly recommended for anyone with an interest in the last tsar. It is, as other reviewers have said, a shame that it is out of print and hard to find.

Did you know that it is five times easier to climb Mount Everest or to become a dollar billionaire than it is to beat World Champion Gary Kasparov at chess? These two amazing facts arise from Grandmaster Raymond Keene's in-depth study of the games lost by the most highly rated player in history. The book is packed with insights into the World Champion's playing style, and contains all of his losses since entering the highest levels of Grandmaster chess in 1981. So if you want to know just how it is that even the very best can be beaten, you'll find a wealth of entertainment and instruction here. Raymond Keene is a British Grandmaster who is uniquely placed to comment on the World Champion's play, having worked closely with Kasparov on a number of projects, including the definitive openings reference book "Openings 2". He is also the presenter of Thames Television's coverage of the 1990 World Championship match and is chess correspondent for The Times and The Spectator. -from book's back cover

Review Date: 2008-02-22
I bought this book because I was working on a large scrapbook project to give to family members (and of course, one additional scrapbook to keep for myself). Well, this book was exactly what I needed to finish my projects.

First of all, this book includes a BONUS CD (but please note that some of the Instant Memories books do not all include CDs, so please check the books' description to see if the CD is included in your purchase).

Second, the books' colors are vivid.

Third, the pages are very easy to duplicate on a Xerox machine.

Fourth, if you wanted , you can also use the pages straight from the book itself, since the backs are blank (and therefore wont interfere with the pages' usage, front and back).

Fifth, if you LOVE a nostalgic touch to your albums then you will just love this particular book. Many of the reproduceable pages are made from original antique "copper plates" and therefore, your Album can have that nostalgic "look".

Sixth, the front of the book has many "gallery of ideas", and thus, you can get many ideas on how to use most of the scrapbook pages in your own personal album.

By far the best Instant Memories book i've seen

Of the three that I purchase (Babies, Love, and Family) Family was my favorite. It still had the old fashioned look of the other two but somehow the pages were more appealing to me. Beautiful artwork and clip-art.
I would definitely buy this as gifts for family and friends again, however, I would steer clear of the other two.

If you want more money, GET THIS BOOK! "Cousin Jimmy" will open your eyes to the power of "The Time Value Of Money" like no one else. I've heard some people put Jimmy down for his easy folksy style of writing and speaking, but I find it to be an asset. He gets his points across to the reader in a way that wakes up your financial genius without confusing the reader with complicated formulas or boring, useless esoteric theories that would never apply in this universe. Jimmy has done everything he writes about, and he has been very successful at making money, and also in teaching others to do so.

You will learn how to use a financial calculator to really understand income streams, how to compute note payments under various combinations of term, interest rates, payment amounts, future value, balloons, and present value. You will understand how to purchase notes for a profit, how to restructure these notes to improve their present value, and how to use these instruments to create a cash flow, or to use them as currency to acquire properties. These properties can then be used to create your own notes to continue the process. And this is only the beginning. The return on your capital can be outrageous! Your stock market friends will envy and hate you. Your enemies will fear and respect you. Women will want you. Life will be good!

But even if you are not really interested in real estate notes and mortgages, the financial advice and principles that you will learn in this book will serve you well in Life. Much like "Rich Dad, Poor Dad", Jim Napier will impart sound guidance to the reader about money and finance that will be good for your financial health. This advice has made a tremendous difference in my investing and my business, and I know that you should not go through another day of your life without understanding the things that you will learn from this book about money and human behavior. You owe it to yourself and your family. Don't continue to make expensive mistakes with your money that will cost you your future financial security, simply because you already think you are sooo smart. Don't be too cheap to buy this book and read it. Don't be like most people who, after working for a lifetime, cannot retire without drastically reducing their lifestyle and depending upon the charity of their family for support.

What will it really cost you if you do not understand the contents of this book? How might your family benefit if you do?

I REALLY liked this book. Jimmy Napier's "Invest In Debt" is one of the best books to add to your library if you are at all interested in buying paper. In fact, it probably should be the first book you buy if you are intrigued by the possibility of making money buying mortgages, notes, deeds of trusts, mobile home paper, etc. Among those who are knowledgeable in this field, this little book has become somewhat of an underground classic.

Jimmy writes in a very "folksy" down to earth style. Not only is this book easy to read, but it opens up your mind to new ways of looking at money and the miracle of compound interest. I went to 19 years of school and was never taught the financial concepts that this book teaches. Once you grasp the simple ideas that are conveyed in this book, you should be on the road to dramatically improving your financial position in life. After you read and digest what Jimmy says, you can then look for some of the more advanced material regarding making money with paper. The concepts taught by Jimmy are fundamental to many other books and courses that you can find. I used some of Jimmy's concepts to make money with a few older mobile homes. In a year I had turned $200 into about $9000. Not too bad. If I can do it, anyone can. I highly recommend this book.

Being a diabetic for 21 years I have fought the battles that Mr. Pray writes about. In those 21 yrs I have probably read the book 6-7 times to keep me on track. Rereading the book in 2006, I have to say that Mr. Pray certainly had it more difficult than we have it today. The methods used to control diabetes then is so outdated, using urine tests and one type of insulin required him and his family to follow such tight schedules it's amazing he didn't rebell more. This book addresses the process of accepting a chronic disease not the mechanics. But they go hand-in-hand with each other. You can't have one without the other. Thank you Mr.Pray for all your help.........hope all is well in 2006.

In "Journey of a Diabetic," Lawrence Pray begins telling his story when, as a 7-year-old child, he came down with juvenile diabetes.

His onset of symptoms began when he was going away with his grandparents for the summer to Maine, when suddenly, he kept of feeling thirsty, very tired out, and the main thing was losing weight while eating large amounts of food. Nothing would fill him up, and he also had frequent urination, and could not imagine what was happening to him. When he finally collapsed, becoming very ill, the diabetes was discovered.

His family, while supportive was devastated beyond measure. His whole new regime of needles, and dietary control changed his life forever. Yet, as time passed, and Lawrence grew, he failed to accept diabetes, and had lots of difficulty with it.

It takes him many years before he learns acceptance. In fact, he grows up, gets married, and even has a child before he can even begin to not see diabetes as a stigma, but as a learning tool for others.

This is a very interesting and informative book. More than that,it is the kind of book that makes you grow up with the auther in his struggle against a disease that had been a part of his life since childhood.Every diabetic can understand the growth processes one with diabetes must go through to be able to finally accept and control this disease.Mr.Pray writes from the heart and mind of one who has learned alot and is passing on his knowledge to those who have yet to experience it.This book,a review of Mr.Pray's life from childhood to adult,is also a reflection of the lives and feelings of all diabetics.I would highly recommend it for anyone who has relationships with a diabetic.
