On the back of the book, it says that it is written for the clinician, not the statistician. I would say that a biostatistician should definitely read this book before conducting any consulting or collaborations. One has to understand the clients's needs (clinician) as well as the client's audience to be a truely effective biostatistician.

A must have. When would be the next version?

Taking care of sick and injured patients requires special skills, obtained at considerable effort over many years. What about publishing research reports? Any author will tell you that completing and then publishing a research project requires an enormous amount of time and effort. The number of submitted manuscripts has increased more rapidly than the number of journals; at some of our strongest journals such as the New England Journal of Medicine, Lancet, JAMA, only about 10% of submitted papers are accepted. Clearly, a "wannabe" author needs any and every bit of help he/she can get.

Dan Byrne's attractive reasonably priced "Publishing Your Medical Research Paper" provides essential help for both the novice and the more experienced author. The book is unique in many ways. For example, some of the material was obtained from a questionnaire sent to reviewers - the best source of ideas and tips about how to submit a successful, competitive manuscript.

Both the overall big picture, and small, but important details are well covered. Several chapters focus on overall objectives. For example, chapter one summarizes ten key principles for success. Some are obvious, but easy to overlook.

"Invest ample time and money in planning."

As Dan Byrne suggests, you need to spend a lot of time thinking about your research problem and formulating a research plan before you do anything. Without a clear aim and a careful literature review, you are unlikely to succeed, or, if you do, you may simply duplicate previous work.

There is equal attention to small points, such as choice and effective use of graphics.

"You can reduce your graph on a photocopier to see how it will look. Edit the graph until it is as uncluttered and professional as possible."

Any experienced reviewer will tell you how important it is to submit a manuscript with clear writing, clear graphics, and a clear development of ideas. As the book points out, even if the idea is good, a poorly prepared, confusing manuscript is likely to be rejected simply because the reviewers and editors are unsure what the author is trying to say.

It is easy to develop a hostile attitude to reviewers and editors, especially when, after months of hard work your only reward is: "Dear___: I am sorry to inform you we are returning your manuscript entitled .... Because of tight space requirements, we are forced to reject many high quality papers such as yours...."

At such times it helps to remember that Dr. Rosalyn Yalow collected and framed all the rejection letters she received prior to eventual acceptance and publication of the paper for which she was awarded the 1977 Nobel prize in medicine. This book provides accurate, detailed information to authors so they will understand what reviewers and editors look for, and how they judge the quality of a manuscript.

The appendices, which take up about a third of the book, provide practical information to guide authors through the publication process. Having all this material in one place is a real time-saver. You will find the widely used "Uniform Requirements for Manuscripts Submitted to Biomedical Journals", a medical researcher's directory with extremely useful web sites, and the Helsinki declarations for biomedical research.

"Publishing Your Medical Research Paper" is a valuable tool that will guide researchers and authors through the entire research and publication process. Following the recommendations will greatly increase the strength of a manuscript and the chance for acceptance. One word of caution - many of the recommendations concern the early phases of research; to obtain maximum benefit from this book read it before rather than after completion of your project.

Excellent!

This book is an excellent and well-documented guide to the design of clinical trials, the analysis of data, and the construction of a high quality manuscript. Both the novice and the expert will derive many helpful suggestions from its content.

I have always wanted to paper piece, but it seemed daunting. I bought this book and it helped immenseley. The instructions were easy to understand and follow. The strip piecing speeds up the process. The only downfall is that you do waste more fabric than with other processes. However, I combined this method with regular paper piecing (I also bought the book "Show Me How To Paper Piece) and it worked beautifully. Together these books made it easy for a beginner paper piecer and I successfully created a queen size quilt for my brother!

I've been quilting for several years and had been discouraged when I tried paper foundation piecing because my brain just doesn't work that way. This book changed all that. The stars are astonishing and they're very easy to do. I've bought many quilting books and this is, without a doubt, the very best. I hope she writes another soon!

Even if you've never tried paper piecing before, you'll want to have this book. It takes paper piecing to a whole new level, and simplifies the process. For experienced piecers, you'll be amazed at how much faster you can make stunning blocks with Peggy's revolutionary method.

The book is exceptionally well-illustrated. Step-by-step photos walk you through the technique and explain it so clearly that it's the next best thing to taking a workshop with Peggy herself.

You are sure to find more than one quilt you'll want to make from the project section, and the gallery of quilts will inspire you with plenty of ideas. Even though they look complex, the projects are still easy to make, even for beginners.

Definitely a book every quilter should have!

I just purchased this book a few days ago and was so engrossed that I read it cover to cover. Lots of clean, simple ideas that don't require tons of specialized equipment (i.e. eyelet setters, brads, pockets, foldouts) but that could certainly be adapted that way, if you like to use those gizmos. I liked that there were both ideas for doing pages/books chronologically, and doing them thematically (i.e. places we've lived, our home town past and present, our family business). It encourages scrapbookers to chronicle their current life for generations to come (very interesting and creative sequence of layouts about one woman's college career and trinkets/papers that are relevant to her life as a current student). Also gave good ideas for how to scrap pages when there is missing information about relatives, embarrassing decades (aaah, how to scrap the '60's, '70's and '80's when so many of us were awkward teens), and "sensitive" topics or details. The one thing I wish this book had, was more information on how to save/restore old and crumbling memorabilia--I was hoping for a lot more details than "use acid-free paper" or "consult a professional conservator".

I'm been afraid to start my family heritage scrapbook, but the ideas here have really started me thinking. I can do it! With this book to inspire me, the project seems within my capability.
There are tons of ideas with almost 300 pages of photos showing real scrapbook pages. Each sample has details of the paper, font, accents, etc. to show you how it was done.
Sample ideas: use lace or a handkerchief on a page to relate to clothing in vintage pictures * including a family tree * use old letters and cards.
Learn how to incorporate memorabilia without bulkiness and how to give historical perspective to family events.
Quibbles: The tiny print of the photo captions is a little hard to read.

I decided to give my mother a "surprise" scrapbook for her 75th birthday, December 23, 2004. I had a few old pictures that I had borrowed from her during the years and had copies made. I knew I wanted this book to be really special but I did not know how to go about displaying the pictures of my mothers parents and grandparents.

This book is full of pictures and it will help me put this all together in the two short weeks I have to complete it.

I also found an old picture of my mother when she was in her late teens or early twenties. I used it to make an announcement of her upcomming 75th birthday by turning it into a four quarter fold card. I wrote a poem about her and asked all family and friends to send a birthday card, picture or a note for her surprise scrapbook and for them to mail it to my home. That way she will get all the cards at once and they will be a nice keepsake for the scrapbook. I will include one of the announcements I created as part of the scrapbook also. I found an old but pretty etched hand mirror at an antique store and I will incorporate it on the cover of the scrapbook with some lace and ribbons. I will title this scrapbook "Reflections of my family". I will also include pictures of all her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Without this book I would not of thought about the journaling involved with the photos. Luckily, I can contact my mothers sister and cousins for information on the history of the people in the pictures.

My mother lost one of her daughters this September to cancer so it has been a hard year. She was only 53 and very close to mom. I plan to do a special page for her in the scrapbook. I later plan to make a scrapbook called "Sisters" and have just pictures of me and my 3 sisters in it. This was another idea I got from Creating Keepsakes Scrapbooking Family Heritage.

I plan to do more keepsake scrapbooks now for my own grandchildren because it is important to have your family history available for future generations.

I am a beginner to card making, starting when I thought it shouldn't be difficult. But then when I have all of the materials needed, which were ready made blank cards and some stickers, then I realized alot more is needed, and the most importantly: "the know how". This book is awesome, it teaches me in a simple and clear way how to do easy, great and classy cards. It helps me tremendously, as it also explains what tools and accessories to buy. Now I found out that making cards is not simple, and it also expensive.. It's fun though.

I had a History professor who assigned this book for reading no matter what course he was teaching. I didn't understand why until several years after I finshed college. Ms. Smith describes the "ghosts" of the consciousness of the American south, the mythical fears that separate the races, in a way that is literate, poetic and unflinching. If you want to understand the history of the South, this book will fill in the gaps for you.

Upon reading the very first page, I knew I had a very special book in my hands. This is one of the most beautifully written and insightful books I have ever read, with an honesty and moral awareness one would find in the writings of Robert Coles.

Part One, "The Dreamers" chronicles Ms. Smith's life, as well as what she observed of the South as a Southerner herself.

Part Two, "The White Man's Burden," Ms. Smith explains how segregation shuts out not only blacks, but also whites.

Part Three, "Giants of the Earth," discusses how the powers to be, men in politics and business leaders, created the current situtation of segregation in the South and the reasons they wish to maintain the status quo.

Part Four, "The Dream and Its Killers," explores how the very future of humanity, "the Dream," depends on a willingness to embrace positive change and challenge those aspects of the status quo that aim to keep that from happening.

I'd give it more than five stars if it was possible. What a courageous woman to have published this in 1949! I am so glad it was re-issued in 1994!!!! Smith provides insights on, and discusses in depth, things that are basic underpinnings of race relations in this country, but are rarely mentioned. The book is a must for anyone trying to gain insight into the foundations of white privilege and its implications, as well as improving race relations. An absolutely *incredible* book.

Ms. Smith's honesty and eloquence in telling a profoundly American story about the perfidy of the South of her childhood is a literary tour de force about an immensely important slice of American history. It is a profoundly American tragedy fashioned from the most basic of human materials, human fallibilities, many of which still consume us as Americans--black or white, north or south. This book is the most sombering account of who we Americans are--as opposed to who we wished we were--anyone is likely to ever encounter. Unfortunately, since her death, Ms. Smith's story of about race, sex, religion, politics, economics and deception in the south has become the American way of life, writ large.

So much of it seems incomprehensible because it is wrapped in Christian Theology. Ms Smith reveals the secrets that keep the evil and pain alive.

The song of Hiawatha will live forever. Its rythms resonate with the natural rythms of our minds. The language and plot are so nearly perfect, they can lead us into a world of imagination where we lose our cares and worries and find ourselves with Hiawatha in his special magic place. After reading it, I was deeply moved when I visited by boat the pictured rocks region of Michigan Longfellow chose for his setting. I also found myself doodling lines using Longfellow's rythms and wishing today's poetry would return to his way of writing.

Longfellow's saga is pure New England Renaissance.

Although very popular in its day; Longfellow's "Song of Hiawatha" was later viewed to be superficial and saccharine. Where as Walt Whitman may have spoken with more of an organic American voice, Longfellow drew upon English Romantic models and looked to Norse and especially the Finnish epic or "edda" "Kalevala" for inspiration.

Not with standing; Longfellow's saga is pure New England Renaissance; touching upon values and aesthetics characteristic of Longfellow's circle: Oliver Wendell Holmes, Emerson and Thoreau.

The nature-painting of the "Song of Hiawatha" is outstanding; the poetry is full of quotables; and the over-arching message is profound.

The language/ rhythm is as mythical and lovely as the plot

Just to counter an earlier review that states

"... he describes a thought experiment of two spaceships joined by a thread and accelerating identically. Like the earlier authors, Bell wrongly believed the thread would break ..."

Actually, the string would break...

* From the launch pad frame the distance between space-ships stays the same,
but the string is Lorentz contracted

* From the space-ship point of view (not a wise choice), they are accelerating and
so their clocks do not run at the same rate... the front space ship pulls away...
(I find it easier to think of them at differing depth in a 'gravitational' field)

I am SO glad to see that this book has been given a second printing!!! Bravo, Cambridge University Press!

This book is not destined to become a classic-- because It IS a classic ALREADY!! It is just one that hasn't been widely recognized yet.

That's only a matter of time.

Nowadays everyone and their uncle seems to be talking about Quantum Communication this and Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen that-- and I guess with good reason, for we are now starting to see practical applications of this most esoteric of physics subfields.

However, it seems that the more non-intuitve and interesting a topic is, the more obfuscation (both intended and accidental) is written about it. (I'm not just talking about laymen and mystics, but physicists too!) Or, said another way, the more people talk, the less they really understand.

Forget all the rest of the junk out there. Cut to chase. Read about the ESSENTIALS of what QUANTUM MECAHNICS really MEANS from one of the Masters of the field in about 15 short, lucid, crystal-clear essays.

There is some math here, but not much. That is the beauty and the danger of Quantum Mechanics-- because calculations are not that difficult in this field, people are lulled into thinking they really understand what it is they are calculating.

Well, most don't.

If you really want to get a grasp as to what it all MEANS-- forgetting the calculations for a moment--- you must read this book.

Feynman said that nobody really understood Quantum Mechanics.

That may be so...

But John Stuart Bell came the closest.

You can't meet him at a conference anymore (he died in 1990,) but you CAN have him tutor you personally in this short, brilliant masterpiece.

Excellent, and no caveat....

You can see from the other reviews here that this is a fascinating book. Many of the essays discuss 'unorthodox' interpretations of QM like Bohmian mechanics and wave-collapse models. The introduction by Alain Aspect was very interesting as well, and discussed the experimental advances in what he calls the "second quantum revolution." If you are buying an older edition of this book you may not get this introduction.

The previous review "Small Caveat" is a little misleading. Bell does explain that if the spaceships are accelerating slowly enough, the tension in the string will cause the system to contract as a whole, and the string will not break. But if the spaceships maintain a constant distance apart in the frame of the observer, the string will most certainly break. If you don't accept Bell's main argument that the electric fields between the atoms contract, transform to the accelerated frame of one of the ships and you will find the other ship receding away.

But don't listen to me, read the essays yourself! Even if you don't agree with the arguments, you will not be sorry for the thought provoking experience.

I agree with the enthusiasm shown by other reviewers (see also the first edition) for this book's treatment of interpretive issues at the foundations of quantum theory. However, chapter 9 unfortunately titled "How to teach Relativity" shows that Bell's expertise in quantum theory did not extend to special relativity, which he seriously misunderstands. Drawing on an old mistaken paper by Dewan & Beran from 1959, he describes a thought experiment of two spaceships joined by a thread and accelerating identically. Like the earlier authors, Bell wrongly believed the thread would break, showing the Lorentz contraction (again wrongly) to be a "real" effect, rather than an apparent one manifested only in another relatively moving inertial frame.
Despite the fact that, as he mentions in the book, all his CERN colleagues contradicted him, he nevertheless included this old "chestnut" with a false interpretation that can only do harm to the general understanding of STR.

AUTHOR: Judy Kennedy

"As is written on a plaque above the door of an ancient mystery school, we read the imperative that is timeless in essence: KNOW THYSELF. To that end we begin our journey." This quote, taken from the last paragraph of the introduction, gives us but a slight clue to what is to come, so hold on, because it is an amazing journey.
Judy Kennedy presents a volume of fascinating material taken from the research of distinguished scholars, scientist, archeologists and the like. She shares her knowledge with the reader and strives to clear up many misconceptions that have been forced upon us by those who do not wish us to know truth.
In reading this masterfully written research book, the reader realizes that no matter how we believe or how educated we are in the material Judy Kennedy presents, there are volumes of knowledge beyond what the average human being can possibly know. This book challenges traditional views and causes the reader to pause, think and realize that there is much we do not know but that we will, someday, all know the truth.
At the end of her book, Ms. Kennedy includes three appendices that clarify and accentuate added material and an extensive bibliography. The reader, especially if new to the material presented, would benefit from a glossary of terms.
For the inquisitive reader interested in spiritualism and extraterrestrial intelligence, this is a must read.

"Spiritual Practice, Occultism, and Extraterrestrial Intelligence" by Judy Kennedy, is a book that combines esoteric psychology, eastern philosophy, and western wisdom in one information-packed volume. Where else can you find information on chakras, tarot cards, psychotronics, ufos and more in one book? For such "far out" subject matter, Kennedy presents it in a down to earth fashion. I particularly enjoyed the section on music and Pink Floyd.

I really enjoyed this book. In spite (or because?) of the author's extensive academic background, she is able to convey facts about a wide variety of subjects related to the UFO/ET phenomena in a creative, story-like style. Most books I've read in this genre were dry and merely interesting. This one's fun! What I really appreciated was her honesty. If certain material was speculative, she said so. If an idea was her own, she claimed it. It is evident she did a lot of research, yet she does so much more than merely review and recite. She forms her own conclusions, which are fresh and sound. Writing style is clear and concise. She is able to transition to new points and topics with relative ease, weaving it together with the underlying theme of the book - the "Wizard of Oz mysteries" - esoteric truths about the symbolism in that story and how it relates to the material in her book. She reveals connections not ordinarily discerned and her insight sheds much needed light on controversial issues. She gives an in-depth analysis of the principles of occultism, and even gives out a technique for individual practice so that the reader can experience firsthand the reality and effectiveness of this engaged spirituality. This preliminary material forms a strong foundation for what comes next - an overview of the evolution of the esoteric mystery traditions and how they're tied into the UFO/ET phenomena. Why this information is important and how it relates to the reader is thoroughly explored psychologically, sociologically, and spiritually. An entire chapter is devoted to the workings of what she calls the "muddlers" -- a shadowy corporate/governmental oligarchy - how it maintains control and spins the wheel of disinformation and what we can do about it. She explains that they need not resort to conspiracy or secret societies to do this -- it's all done through mainstream politics and economics and she shows how. Finally, she explores at length the little-known physiology of awareness and effects of music and how we can use this fascinating knowledge to heal and strengthen ourselves, leading to a better understanding of each other and meaningful extraterrestrial contact. Very down to earth, she excels in translating supportive scientific studies into layman's terms. Her main message is self-empowerment, that spiritual enlightenment is anchored in the heart - not the head, and ends the book on a compassionate and positive note. Overall, this must be one of the most original books I've ever read. I found it to be empowering, uplifting, and incredibly comprehensive. I only wished she'd included more diagrams. Still, at a whopping 654 pages, it's a lot of bang for your buck. Highly recommended as I believe it's destined to be a classic!

Amazing book of chess

Oh my gosh. That is pretty much all I have to say about this book.

I read the first chapter carefully one night, which was on tactics using one rook, so mostly back ranks. The next day I went to a team match and in the "skittles" blitz game I played before hand I saw a winning back rank tactic that I know I saw thanks to this book. So the first game I played after reading the first chapter, I already won a game thanks to the book! Amazing!

I am continuing to read the book, and it is absolutely incredible. As the other reviews said, the author is easy-going but extremely informative. I have read many other chess tactics books and I have never, I mean never, seen one that is as instructive as this one. I know it is over a 125$ as I write this review. I didn't purchase this book myself, but I borrowed it from a friend. I fully plan to purchase this book as soon as I can though, and it is completely worth the price. Dollar for Dollar, this will increase your rating and strength more than any other book I have seen (being many).

Well yeah, It's a great book. Just buy the expensive ones so that I can buy the less expensive ones when I do :).

The best book I have ever read to learn about tactics

Best book on combinations I've ever seen

My edition of this book is in descriptive notation. It has a few errors that I found by asking "what if?" and checking with a computer. The book still merits 5 stars. Here's why:

1) It is organized according to the pieces involved: 1-R; 2-B; 3-N; 4-Q; 5-P; 6-2Rs; 7-Q+B; and on to 14-three pieces. This way you get to see how the pieces combine and interact (Kotov's "means")*.

2) There are 826 positions in the text and an additional 271 exercise positions (at the end of each chapter), in a little over 400 pages.

3) The motif gets far less attention than it should in chess. (A motif is what is in the present position that suggests the combination. A theme is after the fact.) There is more attention to motifs in this book than in any other I've seen.

4) The text is very easy going, almost whimsical, yet extremely instructive. It is superbly and concisely written and the translation by Hanon Russel is outstanding.

From page 198: "In Flohr-Hilg (1934), Black, at first glance, is not threatened by anything." (diagram) "However, this is only a superficial impression. The Knight on KB3 is covering two critical squares, its Q4 and KR2, and after 1. N-Q5! it is apparent that it is 'serving too many masters.' One must fall."

As you can see, that the knight is covering two critical squares is a motif for the combination beginning with 1. N-Q5. (The theme here would be "overloaded piece".) The whole book reads as simply and clearly as this, making it a pleasure to go through it several times.

My copy, less its spine, is still serving as one of the three chess books I use regularly. It is a clothbound hardcover. Though some pages have loosened, it is more durable than the great majority of chess books I've owned. It is high time this book was reissued (in algebraic notation, of course).

Note that it should have been called "Tal's Book of Winning Chess Combinations," since the great majority of the combinations in the book are from other players' games.

=====================================

*In Kotov's "Think Like a Grandmaster" and its sequel, he treats the "motif-means-theme" topic in some depth. Unfortunately, chess books have had a tendency to focus on theme to the detriment of motif, even though the motif is what is in the position to be solved, while the theme arises from the solution. Fortunately, the motif in chess is starting to get more attention.

I have been playing chess for over 20 years with a USCF rating of 1900+ and ICC 5-minute rating of 2000+. I have never seen a chess book as good as this one. Reading this book will raise your chess rating by at least 200-300 points.

Secrets of winning chess mating combinations are revealed by M. Tal, one of the greatest combinational geniuses of all time. The combination (the heart of chess) is broken down to its basic elements. Each piece is studied individually and in combination with the other pieces. The book is designed to be read without the need for a board.

I love the uniqueness of this wrapping paper. If you want something that stands out from the regular paper, this is it. Tied with a simple bow, the gifts look amazing. The only reason I gave it four out of five stars is that the sheets of paper are very small and you do have to cut out the gift cards by hand.

Very beautiful, solid paper.

This is bright, pretty wrapping paper that will please any lover of art and color. Im saving this for someone special :) The quibbles I have: there are artifacts during the printing (which you wouldnt find in Hallmark giftwrap), the black "leading" was too thick IMO and detracted from the overall look and the gift cards are quite small and you need to cut them out yourself.

I do stained glass work, so was thrilled to find this paper.
I wrapped SG gifts in it at Christmas.
I plan to give the paper itself, as gifts this year.( Along with glass pieces, of course! )
