Yesterday I was having one of those "I need to have an attitude adjustment sort of days". My parents are both deceased, my mother having been buried the week of Christmas in 1988. I get sort of melancholy this time of year, and without meaning to, can slide into a "funk". Anyway, it was that kind of a day. I was looking for something in the bottom, deep drawer of my desk when I came upon Tim Richardson's book, JUMP STARTS. I had actually forgotten I had it. I read the table of contents and knew IMMEDIATELY the place I was to begin reading: Part Seven: Life Teaches Us Lessons in Attitude Adjustment! Yesterday I read "The Sun". This morning I read "Music in the Morning". Thank you, Tim, for the gift of your book. Thank you for writing it for people like me. And I thank God, who always in His timing, knows who or what to put in my path. It was no coincidence that I came across your book yesterday.

It was fun reading Tim Richarson's book, JUMP STARTS. I'm glad Tim has such insight and glad the proceeds go to such a worthy cause. Amazon.com is wise to carry this book. I know it will be a big seller. Businesses would be helped by including this book in their training program.

Truly a great start to the day. It's better than Wheaties!

This is a very detailed book about the life of Kay Francis. The authors present a chronology of Kay Francis' life based on her diaries and other extensive research. Kear & Rossman provide intimate details of her life in an unbiased and thoughtful manner. The authors were able to convey their love of Kay thru the book. We receive a glimpse into the life of a Hollywood actress in the 20s & 30s. This book will appeal to people interested in Kay Francis and Hollywood. I enjoyed it because it shows the individuality of Kay Francis. Her charity work, midwestern values, sexual encounters, and career are all presented in the book. The pictures were great and interesting.
The book left me wanting to know more about Kay Francis and the movies she starred in. I highly recommend this book.

Finally a book on Kay Francis that answers ALL the questions!

I must admit, I didn't know a lot about Kay Francis going into this book but I had seen her in a couple of films and I went the extra mile to delve deeper into her life and career. I was glad I did! Oh, what a life! Oh, what a career!

This book is the definitive reference to Kay's life, both on and off the screen. Her exciting career, her steamy sex life and the best part...much of this book is based on Kay's own personal diary entries. You can't get better than that!

If you know nothing about Kay and you're intrigued with her life, the way I was, you'll learn everything you want and need to know by reading "Kay Francis: A Passionate Life and Career." If you know everything about Kay Francis, you're wrong. You only THINK you do! Without a doubt you'll learn something new here with the turn of every page!

Great book!

This is one of the best biographies I have ever read. You can tell the authors put a lot of time and effort into this work - it's a true labor of love. Filled with beautiful photos and extensive bibliographical notes, this one is a keeper. Who knew Miss Francis was such a "wild child"? Whether you're a film scholar or a movie buff, Lynn Kear's book deserves a special spot in your bookcase.

This year movie buffs are extremely fortunate because out on the market is not one but two wonderful new biographies of the actress who "couldn't wait to be forgotten"--Kay Francis. Lynn Kear and John Rossman have done a superb job of detailing Kay's life with an especially rich section about her early life--prior to Hollywood stardom. The book also captures the essence of the jazz age of the 1920's when women were coming out of their shells and becoming less uninhibited. In many ways Kay Francis was the epitomization of the free spirited women of the jazz age. The book, as usual for a McFarland product, is lovely to look at and the picture quality is superb. Both books quote from Kay's diaries which were long forgotten at a University archives. The diaries provide much of the dynamic revelations in the narrative--Kay's candid thoughts about her life and (many) lovers. Kay Francis certainly did, as the title says, have a passionate life--and a career which movie buffs and fans can easily appreciate. We are fortunate to have this wonderful book as a reminder of that life and career.

An uneven start, but a page-turning finish

This book had such a slow, uneven start that I almost gave up on it. Kay had a very interesting life, but it was hard to determine that from the way the early chapters of her story were written. Lots of childish exclamation points, and chronological lists that read like "the begats." I adore Kay Francis, and wanted to find out about her life. The authors had the access to her diaries that other biographers were lacking, and her private life was definitely a wild one. That she escaped public, career-ruining scandal is nothing short of a miracle. Once the authors reach her apex year of 1932, and then her war work, the style of the writing really picks up and the story becomes a veritable page-turner. It's definitely worth getting through the first third of the book in order to enjoy the best parts. I respectfully disagree with the reviewer who thinks Kay would have loved this book - she would have hated anyone delving into her private life (she didn't even want anything done with her ashes, she was so private), but speaking as an avid fan of Miss Francis, I'm very glad it was written.

Winicki delivers what he promises. You get lots of usable information on headlines and how to write a small print ad. Most of what's in the book could also apply to direct mail ads. If you are looking for your first advertising book, for your small business, this is it. Easy to read and gets to the point.

Great for those new to creating small ads

If you have a small business, you don't like to read much and you are clueless about advertising - this is an awesome little book. It will teach you the basics of creating effective ads in about 100 pages. With some practice, your business is bound to improve and this little book will pay for itself many times over.

The author goes straight to the point, without wasting your time and for that I would've given this book 5 stars if it weren't that the lack of proper editing of this book took my mind for a spin several times. At the beginning of the book, there is a lovely headlines "The Noise My Customers Make!", followed by a happy customer testiominial which ends with "Well, you're wrong if you think that ... Mike [the author of this book] can do for your business what he did for mine."

So, if you can overlook this and a couple of other blunders in this book, the book teaches you how to focus on benefits, as opposite to features, of the product or service you are offering, how to create effective headlines, and how to design them. The focus of the book is on creating effective headlines, and briefly mentioning few additional benefits, since there's not much more you can put in a small add. If you want to learn how to write effective (longer) body copy, you'll have to turn to bigger books.

Fantastic Book! EVERY small business owner should buy it!

This was a great book! Don't spend one penny on advertising until you read it. It is amazing how many small business owners are literally throwing money away on ads that are terrible. After I finished it, I opened my yellow pages and noticed that easily 90% of the ads are terrible. This book will show anyone how to write an effective ad and give you an edge over your local competitors. Enjoy!

If you are new to creating space ads or writing copy, this is an excellent book to get you started. You will see many concrete examples and you will start to think like a advertising guru. However, if you are an experienced ad designer or copy writer and hoping for some fresh ideas, then you may be disappointed.

Overlook the lack of editing.

I don't remember when I've read a book that was more painful to read than KILLER TECHNIQUES TO SUCCEED WITH NEWSPAPER, MAGAZINE AND YELLOW PAGES ADVERTISING by Michael Winicki. This book was produced sans editor/proofreader. There are errors on virtually every page of the book. The book is barely 100 pages and could have easily been condensed down to a booklet. The book is self-published and is the sort of thing that will give self publishing a bad name. I know from Winicki's reputation, he does not possibly submit ad copy with so many errors. Also, the back cover is so blurred, my 50+ year old eyes can hardly read it.

So right about now you're probably thinking, "Do I really want to spend my hard earned money on this, and why the generous five star rating?" Simple. I have to consider, even with the lack of editing, was the book worth the money I paid for it? Well, let me just say, I believe what I learned from this book will pay the price a hundred times over! There are literally notes and highlights on virtually every page of my copy. This is a book I know I will refer to time and time again.

I learned so much from these error laden pages, I don't know where to begin! So I'm just going to say, buy this book. Struggle through it. It is more than worth the effort.

And to Mr. Winicki, thank you for producing this valuable resource, but before you publish your next book, send me a copy. I will be very happy to edit your work for a reasonable fee. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.

What can i say about this book?

Well for starters, it "takes you there". It strips the fat of excess materialism from your consciousness and takes you to a place of truth and peace that is our natural inheritance as children of GOD.

Im not really sure from whence these letters emanate but they come from a source very far and yet in our very breath. Reading an essay with utter devotion, will take you to your center from which we are meant to live anyway.

Its a permanent fixture on my bedside table

I was given Letters of the Scattered Brotherhood many years ago as a gift. My copy was recently misplaced and I was able to order another copy from Amazon. I refer to the letters daily and I find it fascinating that I just happen to turn to a page that contains a message I need to receive that day. The letters speak directly to my spirit and the words always guide me in a very loving way. Approached with an open mind and an open heart, "Letters" is invaluable!

These epistles were printed in a religious weekly from 1934 to 1948, then they were gathered and published in book form. Many of them were written in the difficult days of World War two. The letters have been interpolated with quotations
from the great company scattered the world over who have found faith to walk in immortality now. The letters, we are told, are not written by one person, yet the likeness of terminology and viewpoint make them appear to be from one mind. One thing is certain these letters come from a higher register. Mary Holbrook Wilson Strong arranged the letters and gathered the quotes in this wonderful spiritual resource of a book.

I first found Letters of the Scattered Brotherhood as a discard on a religious book rack. It was an old, out of print hardcover edition, and I came to treasure it. Unfortunately, one day I left it on a bench, and didn't find it when I went back. I have grown to believe that someone who needed it more than I at that moment found it. That seems to be the way it came to me. I have since replaced it with the newer, paperback version, and I still value it greatly. It is a book you can open to any spot, at any time, in any need, and find something to speak to you. Truly timeless and inspired.

The Letters of the Scattered Brotherhood is the best book I have ever owned. I bought it many times at used book stores to give to friends since I found my own copy in the early 1980s. I am so glad to see that it was reprinted in 1991. Now I just order it from Amazon. This is a book that I have never read from the front to the back. I have always just closed my eyes for a moment then opened it. It is ALWAYS on the right page. Not magic, just real. 5 stars plus a heart. Buy this book. Your answers are in it too. Then listen.

As a nursing student I loved this book. It gave a great perspective on some areas of nursing that nursing students may not be exposed to during clinicals. Toward the end of the book it did get into nursing/hospital politics and policy, which slowed things down. I wish that the author had ended with something better and more inspiring.

I really liked the aspects of this books that dealt with the three nurses performing their jobs in their perspective fields. That was great- but all the talk about nursing jobs getting cut really gets boring after a while. So much so I've been dreading reading the last chapter. Great book, just has some boring parts.

A must read for all those working IN or WITH the profession of nursing. Gordon discusses how the changes in our health care system have affected both the nurses role and quality patient care issues. The essential need for collaboration of all health care personnel is woven throughout the content. I required this book for a senior nursing course I just taught at Wayne State University in Detroit and the students were most impressed with the book and its approach to nursing, medicine and health care. A must read for nurses, physicians, hospital administration, potential students and the general public. Afterall, we are all potential patients and we should be aware of what is happening to the largest population of health care providers, the nurses!

Essential reading for all health care consumers .

To finally have a chance to see Windsor McCay's artwork as it was intended is the treat of a lifetime. The reproductions I've seen in the past reduce the size of the art like watching a 70mm film on a regular TV set.

Nothing is being produced like this anymore. McCay's talent is beyond amazing, it would take a normal artist months to produce one page like he was doing every week. The book is exhausting and I can only read a dozen pages at a time. These are exact reproductions of actual newsprint pages from the time so all the printing imperfections are here but that should not dissuade the appreciation of this comic.

If you are a true drawn art aficionado find the money for this. You will not regret it.

This is the most beautiful book I have ever seen. Having purchased the complete Little Nemo book series in the 1980's I really looked forward to finally being able to see this lovely comic in its original format. When the book arrived today I realised that it was even better than I had hoped for, extremely high quality and of impressive size.

The only drawback is that it does only contain a selection of the story, but I can always read the missing pages in the cheaper old edition. A big applaud for the publisher who dared produce this wonderfull piece of art.

Let's be honest: this book's not cheap. Is it worth the price tag? Without question or hesitation: yes. If you're even contemplating buying this book, I probably don't have to tell you how great the Little Nemo strip was. What you'll want to know is that this book will make you feel like you've never really seen Little Nemo until now. It is a magnificent, absolutely stunning book.

First of all, this book is huge. McCay's work is reproduced at its original size, which reveals his superb draftsmanship in all its glory. If you remember Little Nemo as lovely but kind of cramped, you're not going to believe how open and expansive the strips look here.

Secondly, the color reproduction is superb. I'll take the editor's word that a great deal of effort was expended to match McCay's original coloring directions. What I will say is that the colors here are vibrant without being garish. It's really unbelievable that such sophisticated color work comes from a strip that's a hundred years old. I don't think most newspapers today could pull this off.

You really have to see the book to appreciate how incredible it is. This really sets a standard against which the other collections I've seen fall far short. If you can swing the price, you won't be sorry. You might, however, have a hard time finding a place to store it!

If you ever had hopes of becoming an author, NEVER read this book. A look into how the technical process of writing works, all this book shows the reader is the various disappointments that an author will encounter while trying to get his book published.

Although it presents what I imagine to be a realistic view of the creative process, the author presents a plethora of examples of well-known authors and their experiences. The problem? He uses the exact same examples over and over again. The language that he uses is very colloquial and the laid back tone is quite surprising, considering it is a "scholarly" work.

The biggest problem I have with the book is this. How is it possible for an author that is clearly not a best-selling author know what exactly the best-selling process is like? If not for the examples of other authors, it would be impossible for him to talk about the process.

All in all, this book was a big disappointment, and all it shows is the negative aspect to book publishing.

This book was lent to me by a University Professor who recommended it as the most comprehensive and thought-provoking study of the publishing industry he's read in years. I couldn't agree more. As a potential author, I found The Making of a Bestseller an encouraging and thought-provoking work. It offers a clear look into the world of publishing, therefore, demystifying the process for those of us just embarking on this sometimes frustrating journey. Insightful and uplifting, one cannot fail to come away without a great deal of encouragement. I, for one, found myself wondering, if F. Scott Fitzgerald faced similar adversity and prevailed, why can't I? One thing we writers must learn: A thick skin is required in this business. This book is not for the unrealistic or faint-hearted. But neither is a career in writing.

A Celebration of Creative Writing

Review Date: 2000-03-27
This hand-wringing book is about bestsellers; it does not (and can not) define how bestsellers are made. This celebration of creative writing is about writers paying their dues and being discovered. Vanderbilt discusses the effects titles, advertising, author name recognition, perseverance, bestseller lists, reviews, testimonials and blind, dumb luck had on books that made it to the charts. It is a well-written, scholarly study of successful literature with references and footnotes. This book makes a couple of references to nonfiction but is almost entirely about fiction. I am a young "Anglo-American" (white) girl living in a Texas/Mexican border town with a 98% hispanic community, and am on my way to learning the language fluently. I read this book in my Spanish class, and nearly died from the beauty of this book! It has helped me along with recognizing and comprehending Spanish along with leaving me a satisfied reader. Someday when I speak fluent Spanish, I will read this to my daughter and am sure it will be her favorite bed-time story. :-)

Seeing as though I couldn't get the real Marianela quickly, this one suited quite well, perhaps even better. I had to write a paper on it and the simplified language made mush easier to understand.

Pablo, a rich blind boy is madly in love with poor Marianela. Things go smooth until renowned Doctor Teodoro GolfĂn offers to cure up Pablo's eyes. Marianela, who thinks she is ugly is afraid that when he starts seeing, he'll see how ugly(on the surface) she really is. Her fears are confirmed when he falls for his beautiful cousin Florentina, who doesn't treat Marianela too well. She is so attached to Pablo that if she doesn't look beautiful for him, she won't be any use to him. A very destructive point of view which she sticks to. It's a tragic ending but it's common in most Spanish-language stories.

What is the actual implication of this fictitious work? Isn't there a serious, profound and truthful lessons in this love story so down-to-earth but yet so complex?

Marianela, a love story published in 1878 portrays a relationship between a blind man and his guide-- not beautiful a woman, whom he imagines attractive. Loving him she worries that once the man recovers his eyesight realizes she is not as pretty as he thinks her to be.

The author wisely crafts an interesting symbolism between the capacity to see, which is always spiritual and emotional, and on the other hand the human eyesight which can be inadequate, restrictive and misleading.

The implication that runs through the whole story is that adversity is a blessing in disguise, since blindness forces him to be humble enough to perceive the beauty she and others manifest. Once he recovers his eyesight and sees her for the first time with his human eyes, he rejects her.

Wasn't he in possession of real sight while blind than when he was able to recover his sight and to humanly see? Isn't Perez Galdos message, that the capacity to see and understand is mental, emotional and not necessarily physical?

Finally I can say this classic must be understood as a lesson on the spiritual superiority over the evidence presented by the human senses. This emotionally complex story has a symbolism, it will teach a lesson to whoever is receptive enough to its deeper meaning.

I must admit that this book didn't pick my interest when I started reading it in My Spanish AP class in high school. Now after reading it I have to say that this book is wonderfully written and very educational.
Marianela is a girl who lives in The Mines of Socartes, she is the guide of a rich boy who suffers fom blindness Pablo. I loved Marianela's character since the first pages, she is so full of life, so innocent. All her life she lived out of the pity of others but it didn't matter to her. Pablo "said" he loved her and she lived in this illusion where she thought that she would finally be loved and not criticized by her looks.
Then, everything changed when Teodoro Golfin, a miracle doctor gave Pablo his sight. That's when everything changed. When Pablo saw what Marianela really looked like, he just started treating her horribly. Where did all his love go? I have to say that by the end of the book I hated Pablo with a passion. How can someone be so cynical as to tell a person how beautiful she is without really seeing the exterior appearance and then being disgusted by what he sees when he looks at how that person really looks? Sadly that's what happens with Pablo and it would have been better if he had stay blind.
This book bring some things that are really important. True beauty is on the inside, never judge someone by their exterior appearace because you might be surprised. True beauty is not something that you can see or touch, beauty has to be felt.
I highly recomend this book, it will touch your heart I promise

Living Without Fear

Have you ever felt like your present life was nothing like you'd dreamed it would be? Well, in MASTERING ABUNDANCE, psychic Nzingha Moses suggests that much of our disappointment about life can be attributed to our own fear and limited thinking. She also talks at great length about how karma plays a role in our life. In addition to providing case examples, the author incorporates her own experiences and journey to a deeper level of spirituality.

This is a book that will inspire self-reflection. For clarification, this isn't a book about Christianity; it focuses more on spirituality. Moses does a good job demonstrating the connection between our behavior today and the past hurts we have experienced. The book also inspires readers not to settle for second best, but rather to think big and set high expectations. The discussion about the problems many encounter in relationships was also quite interesting. Her suggestion to love yourself foremost and then look for a significant other is a pearl of wisdom that isn't new, but definitely bears repeating.

The real-life examples used in the book were an excellent addition and provided context for some of the points outlined in the book. However, some of the points were supported by rather circular reasoning and the book got a little preachy at times. Where the book falters for me most is in the "how-to" aspect, where it seemed as if the author oversimplified things. If you have been crippled by fear for most of your life because of some early childhood experience, it seems a little elementary to just say "change your thinking" and expect for change to occur. If you are ready for a change then MASTERING ABUNDANCE may provide just the inspiration. (RAW Rating: 3.5)

"The longer I live, the more I realize the impact of attitude on life. It is more important than the past, than education, than money, than circumstances, than failures, than successes, than what other people think or say or do. Pastor and author, Chuck Swindoll
The epitome of the above quote, Mastering Abundance, A Spiritual Approach to Getting anything you Want by Having God Serve You, is a tiny book with a big message.
Page by page you will begin to see that everything you have ever wanted is within your grasp; all the imagined obstacles have been placed there by your own psyche. You can break out of the "poverty consciousness" that is keeping you back and begin to manifest all that your heart desires.
Positive and Negative energies are discussed in detail. The author explains to the reader how they receive what they send out into the world- Negative begets negative and positive attracts positive. It is all up to you!
The remarkable thing is that we as human beings have a choice to make everyday regarding the attitude we will embrace. The past cannot be changed nor can we change the people that surround us, however we can change how we react to each situation as it presents itself. By looking at the world with a positive attitude, we will begin to see positive reflections back on ourselves. People react differently to someone who is positive and upbeat. Situations can be dealt with more easily if we view them in a positive manner. Take the lessons from the circumstances and make the best of them.
Author, Nzingha Moses is an ordained minister, Pastor and Founder of The Spiritual House of Unconditional Love. She is also a motivational speaker who inspires everyone she touches.
Attitude is more important than appearance, skill or giftedness. It will make or break a relationship ... a home...a lifetime. Pick up a copy today and start your path to a new, more productive and enriched life.

Written by motivational speaker Nzingha Moses, the ordained minister, pastor and founder of The Spiritual House of Unconditional Love, Mastering Abundance: A Spiritual Approach To Getting Anything You Want By Having God Serve You is a profoundly spiritual self-help guide to focusing all of one's talent and entering a receptive state to permit the workings of both oneself and the Universe to fulfill one's desires. Mastering Abundance is not about fulfilling greed, or a magic formula to instantly grant wishes; it is a thoughtful examination of the psychological and spiritual limitations people impose on themselves every day - from defeatism to envy and worse - and how to remove them. If one prefers being unhappy to the risk of searching for happiness, then one will be unhappy, and not even God himself can change that. But if one follows the steps outlined to free oneself from resentment, adopt a positive attitude, work to enable one's dream and be ready to claim the opportunity when it appears, then and only then can one's dream become reality. A truly inspirational guide.

I received this book on X-mas as a gift from a friend. As I read this book I found myself in tears. On each page I saw my life past in front of me. The chapters that really hit home for me were: Stop fearing happiness, Being gracious and recipe for manifesting what you want.<br /> This book has changed my life for the better I would never let this book leave my side. I love it and I can't wait until the author writes another book from her biggest fan.
