A Natural History of Negation

Who Would Have Believed Negation Could Be This Interesting?
Helpful Votes: 10 out of 11 total.
Review Date: 1999-12-28
Perhaps the best history of negation available in English. It is historical in that it identifies the way in which a given author questions some logical relation that all previous thinkers took for granted. It is, in the language of the field, pragmatic. It discusses the relation between logical relations and everyday discourse. Horn, an eminent figure in the field, will on occasion offer his own solution to a paradox that has puzzled logicians for centuries. He manages to be perfectly clear without sicrificing rigor. And he is a terribly witty writer. When it comes to combining logic with wit, he has no peer except V.O. Quine. I'm searching for a used copy, but apparentlv everyone who buys a new copy hangs on to it.

A surprisingly readable treatment of natural language processing in the Lisp programming language. Note that it is *not* an introduction to Lisp.

The table of contents:

(1) Introduction
(2) Finite-state techniques
(3) Recursive and augmented transition networks
(4) Grammars
(5) Parsing, search and ambiguity
(6) Well-formed substring tables and charts
(7) Features and the lexicon
(8) Semantics
(9) Question answering and inference
(10) Pragmatics

In addition, the book contains code listings, solutions to selected exercises, and good end-of-chapter suggestions for further reading.

These days, celebrity authors earn thousands of dollars for a speech, but back in the 1880s, Ralph Waldo Emerson, the first American author known to receive payment for delivering a talk, was paid $5 and oats for his horse.

Neotyphodium grass interactions

Review Date: 2000-07-30
This volume represents an excellent up-to-date compilation of the current knowledge base regarding the endophytic fungi of the genus Neotyphodium (formerly Acremonium) and their effects on their grass hosts, invertebrate and vertebrate herbivores, and the plant communities in which they interact. Current timely research findings in many areas regarding the tall fescue endophyte and its impacts on animal husbandry and production are clearly and precisely explained. Global perspectives on the tall fescue endophyte concerns are also examined. Given the complex and constantly-changing dynamics of this research arena, this volume provides up-to-date important information regarding how the endophyte and its alkaloids manifest their influence on a variety of laboratory animals and livestock. It is an excellent reference for those currently involved in tall fescue endophyte research and also for those looking for a comprehensive first "look".

Good scientific approach

A good scientific approach to teaching language to a chimp. The researchers painstakingly record and measure the animal's language skills to come up with a fair assesment of how limited chimpanze's really are in using sign language to communicate.

Read the book then watch the movie!!

As a parent of a child with Autism and ADHD I know firsthand how difficult social situations can be. Two of the most difficult places are the movies and restaurants. Both of these places require long periods of sitting and being quiet which can be difficult for any child, especially one with Autism. That is why this book is so unique and wonderful. It actually shows how to act in these situations in very simple language that even a young child can understand. I have read this story to my son before going out to the movies and to dinner and I have found that he actually does "Get It". I can still remember my wife writing her own social stories for my son years ago because nothing like this existed. I am so glad that someone actually saw a need for this kind of book and created it. All the books in this series are just great, I would highly recommend them!!

Fabulous alphabet / Northwest photo book
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2005-12-05
This is a beautiful book of photos relating to the Pacific Northwest. I live in Yakima and was happily surprised to find "Y is for Yakama" - they even spelled the Yakama's name with the newly adopted spelling. It goes through listing animals, geographic features and native people. This is a fantastic book for anyone, but especially those wanting to teach their children about the Pacific Northwest. . and Yakima!!
