A nice collection of articles on grammatical inference
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2000-12-31
This book is a collection of papers that were presented at the 1998 International Colloquium on Grammatical Inference. Grammatical inference is a subfield of machine learning, inductive inference, and pattern classification. Applications of grammatical inference include speech recognition and speech production, computational molecular biology, information extraction, and music composition, among others. The articles included in the book are representative of some of the best current work in grammatical inference. I enthusiastically recommend the book to anyone interested in learning about the current advances in this subfield of machine learning.

a comprehensive information source for speech processing
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2000-03-17
This book gives a very comprehensive overview of all aspects of spoken language processing. It was written by leading members of the spoken language community (Expert Advisory Group on Language Engineering Standards). It is a very valuable reference source for designers of spoken language systems. Each chapter is concluded by a set of recommendations. For readers with a linguistics or CS background, it provides a comprehensive survey of all aspects of spoken language processing, and can be used as introduction to the field. Annoyingly, the book contains a number of typos, and could benefit from thorough proofreading. The book is also available as four reasonably priced paperbacks, some of which are not listed in the Amazon Catalog.

Beautiful introduction to Chinese characters

Since we happened upon this book in the local bookstore, it has been among our 3 1/2 year old daughter's most frequent requests. It is a beautiful introduction to the way in which the Chinese language is linked with art. It is also nice to see a book in which the folks in the park are as diverse as the folks we see in the parks in our city. We are buying this as the one book our family gets to choose for our daughter's preschool library. Highly recommended!

A good explanation of ISD methodologies and future potential
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 1997-04-01
This book is a review of exisitng Information Systems Development (ISD) methodologies and the place each has had in the paradigm of IS. While providing an in-depth look at the issues surrounding each of the methodologies the authors have also provided a look at a newly developing paragim in ISD, that of neo-humanism.

A book well worth reading if you have an interest in the history of ISD, or you are looking for material on the theories behind each of the methodologies that make up the history of ISD. These authors suggest that there are four paradigms associated with this topic, make up your own mind.

They also include a philosophical perspective on data modelling but this may be a bonus to the main issue of ISD methodologies.

Interpretation - from A to Z, and much more!
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2005-01-18
(This review refers to the 2nd Edition of the book)

Let's make it clear: this is an excellent Book!

By its volume almost an encyclopedia, by its nature a comprehensive textbook, 'Interpretation of Cultural and Natural Resources' will guide you through all aspects of the subject theme. The authors decided to accomplish a tremendously delicate task: to educate their readers on various facets of interpretation, inspiring them to keep up thinking of their own activity in the growing field of interpretation. And they realized that hard task as excellent interpreters - step by step, starting from basic but varied definitions through principles and forms of interpretations to the problems of interpretation management.

The best quality of the book is the way in which the authors write - everything is explained here in a clear, economic, easy readable and instructive way. All sections and chapters follow logically and smoothly. Having taken an 'all-in' approach to their theme, the authors presented theoretical - mainly sociological and psychological - and practical aspects of interpretation. There is probably any important name from the field that had not be mentioned, cited or commented in the book. Quite a few figures serve as an additional 'prop' the authors used to help us understand systems, structures and connections. Examples of practices given in the book relate to the United States, but the authors acknowledged their emphasis on the environment they knew best. Besides, all examples are well described and explained, often illustrated by photographs, so that everyone can understand the 'message'. From this point of view, the book serves as an excellent tool for self-education of novices as well as for improvement of practice in case of more experienced interpreters.

And, finally, though the book is written by the three distinctive authors, there are no visible discrepancies, controversial comments or even differences in style of writing. The whole text, both its structure and its style, is appropriately leveled as much as possible, indicating a successful team work.

When it comes to interpretation, start your exploration of the subject from this unique book. For most of us, this single book is more than enough if we want to understand what interpretation is and how can it be performed effectively. Keep it close to you at all times, you'll find yourself needing to consult it pretty often!

Do not hesitate much, order it right now! You are just a click away from your best investment in your career as Interpreter!
