This book is the essence of the creative process. Broken down into the three distinctive methods of these extraordinary designers, it is a guide for anyone who is in need of some creativity. This book is a catalyst for visual exploration. It comes highly recommended for not only students and professors, but for anybody who could use a little creativity. It's well written and well designed, two things that seem to be mutually exclusive in graphic design books these days. Kudos to Ms. Anderson!

An in-depth exploration of artistic creative work
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 1998-11-10
An in-depth study (also a PhD thesis) of different creative processes and works both through personal experience and through interviews with artists, based on a model of realities developed by Will McWhinney in Paths of Change (1992). From my perspective: not a beginners guide to creativity, highly demanding on the reader, but a very important piece of work.

Finding good information on ways to unleash creativity in a spiritual context is easy. Finding a way to sell creativity to businesses is another thing. I particularly liked the way the book encourages you to customize your own training program. In my business I work with a very diverse group of people and businesses which demands that my program also be diverse. I highly recommend this sourcebook.

I absolutely loved this book. It provided me exactly what I was looking for - confirmation that I was making good use of my time by writing in my journal and exploring creativity. "It's a God Thing!" affirms the author while she gently provides Biblical references. I appreciated the Biblical reference on God's support of creative expression. The author addresses the concerns that young girld may have about trying the different activites, exploring creativity and journal writing by writing from several girl's point of view. She encourages the girls to pray and talk to their parents for support. I will definitely share this book with the young girls in my family.

A valuable resource for teachers, students, & parents

I am always fascinated by creativity. Whenever I come across a creativity book, irrespective of whether it is intended for the business or academic world, I will always scan it first and if it appears "intriguing" judging from the front/back covers, table of contents and index page, I will often peruse - and reflect on - it. I will often adapt the ideas to my consulting work. In this case, this book did not disappoint me.

In a nut shell, this is a book about practical strategies for teaching and learning creative thinking skills. Although it has been written primarily for teachers and students, I find that many of the information on theory, strategies and assessment covered by the book are applicable and useful for anyone who is interested in exploring creativity, even in non-academic areas.

The main bulk of the book pertains to approaches to teaching the basic curriculum - mathematics, science, social studies, language - that encourage creative problem solving, and information on how research on motivation and creativity applies to decisions about classroom management, organisation and assessment.

The book is divided into two parts: "Understanding Creative People & Processes" and "Creativity & Classroom Life.". The first part gives an excellent grounding in creativity fundamentals. The second part gives practical suggestions for creativity design, development & assessment in a classroom setting. For teachers, this part, especially the assessment tools, is a real gem.

Very fortunately, the author's fluid writing style, coupled with her interesting case studies and numerous applications, makes the book easy-to-follow.

The author has very masterfully organised practical activities, such as "Thinking about the Classroom" and "Journeying and Journalling" in every chapter. For readers, there are a lot of points to ponder, several questions to ask and many things to do. This is the part I enjoyed "playing" with them the most.

At the end of each chapter, and also in the bibliography, the author has listed many useful references for further exploration. For research purposes, this is a gold mine.

For parents, who are looking for simple ideas and practical strategies to develop creative activities for their children, I dare say this book is definitely a very helpful guide.

As a matter of fact, if you are just looking for creative opportunities in your own life, this book (particularly chapter 6) can be a valuable source of curious delight.

Dr. Nemiro has raised the standard on books on virtual creativity. Her expansive and detailed rendering of the subject should help this book find its way to a number of re-issues. As a magazine editor who works with writers from all over the continent, I can appreciate the comparison of differing virtual models. I only wish that I had had Dr. Nemiro's book a decade earlier before I began my career in publishing. Regardless, I am grateful for this book - for the precision work of a fine mind.

Working in the film business and having been a member of virtual teams in the past, this book has helped me understand why some teams have worked while others haven't. In particular, I enjoyed the section on climate and interpersonal communication and bonding. With the future promising increased use of distance collaboration, this will be my reference for being part of a healthy, productive team. I highly recommend this book.

I've wrestled for years with my creative side, wishing and wanting the strength to create beautiful and elegant dresses for women over 50 but didn't seem to have the "it" to move ahead. Green helped me find that strength and commitment, giving me more confidence by introducing the business tools that I need, and more importantly, helped me to tap into that piece of me that is indeed creative.

My God, I write books on creative thinking, for example, "Thinkertoys: A Handbook of Creative Thinking Techniques," and this book by Sternberg is definitely a five star book which is excellent and informative. Why it is priced this high is beyond me. I mean let's get real and price it to the market and not to what some academic idiot thinks its worth. No book is worth this kind of money. Anyway, it's excellent. Check it out at the library and spend the money on something else, like take your loved one out to dinner.

Like many people whose daytime activities do not depend on creativity I gravitate to a hobby that requires creativity. But how do you unleash latent creativity? Most of us don't have a clue, and we suppose that whatever creative talent we have will just naturally come out. Dr. Gamez's little book is the best "How to" book I've seen on this subject. I highly recommend it!
