But why not write one more page? It just left me wanting more. And the surprise ending was my favorite part -- but I won't ruin it for other readers (hint -- it involves a watermelon.)

Best book in resolution proof systems I've ever read. Throughly engaging, yet the end is a little too predictable. Good characters, especially P and ~P are quite convincing in how they acheive complete tautology.

The Deep side of robotics
Helpful Votes: 9 out of 9 total.
Review Date: 2001-06-15
This 200 page book might not look like much when you first open it up. But...

If you want to understand concepts like: Spatial Kinematics; Spatial Dynamics; Inverse Dynamics; Forward Dynamics - The Composite-Rigid-Body Method; Extending the Dynamics Algorithms; Coordinate Systems and Efficiency; Contact, Impact, and Kinematic Loops, this book is for you!

If you want to learn how to computate efficient algorithms for calculating the dynamics of robot mechanisms represented as systems of rigid bodies, then this book is for you!

The efficiency of these calculations are acchieved by the use of recursive formulations of the equations of motion. The use of recursive formulations in dynamics is fairly new, so the priciples of their operation and reason for their efficiency are explained.

These algorithms are initially described in terms of an un-branhed, open-loop Kinematic chain - atypical serial robot mechanism. This is done to keep the descriptions of the algorithms simple, and is in line with descriptions appearing in the literature. Once the basic algorithms have been introduced, the restrictions on the mechanism are lifted and the algorithms are extended to cope with kinematic trees and loops, and general constraints at the joints. The problem of simulating the effect of contact between a robot and its environment is also considered. Some consideration is given to the details and practical problems of implementing these algorithms on a computer.

The reader is asumed to have a knowledge of vectorial mechanics. No prior knowledge of robot dynamics, or the dynamics of any other kind of rigid-body system, is required.

Keeps on Giving

I ordered this book to help prepare our entry in next year's competition. It looks like we are not going to make it, but I am still glad I ordered RoboCup. Almost 800 pages of robot know-how plus tons of illustrations - it just keeps on giving! This has been and will continue to be a great source of information for my other robotics projects. The RoboCup books are one of the best-kept secrets to success in amateur robotics.

Wonderfully interesting robot experiments on a TRS-80 micro.

Review Date: 1999-01-01
This 1981 book introduced me to "Evolutionary Adaptive Machine Intelligence" using a series of experiments written in Level II Basic. They were very thought-provoking. I was hoping to find a new edition of this book for use on an IBM-compatible microcomputer with a more recent version of Basic, such as GW-Basic. I'd love to find such an update.

This is the best all around history of robotics available in a single volume. Nocks clears up many misunderstandings and plain wrong information which is constantly repeated in other sources. Covers the subject from the ancient world until today and tells many fascinating stories...who knew there really were such things as 'steam men' and that the first appeared in New Jersey in the 19th century?

Perfect for any library or home collection

"FAST FORWARD" is an innovative new series looking behind the scenes at a wide range of subjects spanning from the Egyptian Pyramids to Natural Disasters and Robotics. This book begins with a single question: "What Are Robots?" and works its way casually through other topics like robot designs for hazardous conditions, the entertainment industry, the medical profession, and even outer space exploration. The book ends with a short glance towards the future and all the wonderful possibilities that await us. Additionally, the author, Mark Bergin, has included a glossary of terms, an index and a short list of "ROBOT FACTS" for easy reference for kids ages 9 - 12.

Bergin is also the illustrator of this fabulously designed book. He has really set himself apart as both an author and illustrator in this series. For the most part, I'd have to say the illustrations are the best part of this book. While the content is educational - the illustrations give this book an edge above the rest I've seen.

Bergin had also been previously commissioned by aerospace companies and has illustrated a number of books including "SPACE SHUTTLE" & "EXPLORATION OF MARS" in the FAST FORWARD SERIES. The author also consulted with Physics & Astronomy Professor, Peter Turvey, who teaches at the University of Lesicester in London, before writing this book.

Rough Sets: Theoretical Aspects of Reasoning about Data (Theory and Decision Library D:)

Very interesting book!

Review Date: 2006-09-18
The book is a tutorial overview -- written by the originator of Rough Set theory -- of the work which has been done in this field (by himself and many others) during the decade of the 80's. Although the field remained active through the 90's and until today, this book is still essential for anyone wanting exposure to the various aspects and applications of rough set theory. It's fantastically well written for a book of this nature, full of easy examples, and with very few mathematical prerequisites. One could not really say that it is a "new" theory, since almost every aspect of rough set theory (granulation, feature selection, rule construction, etc.) has been explored in other contexts and applications, but rough set theory just ties these things together in a very nice way. I highly recommend the book. I don't understand the current pricing on it, however, and I wish the publisher would make a reasonably priced paperback of this important text.

A Classic in the field and Still Inspiring
Helpful Votes: 7 out of 8 total.
Review Date: 1999-12-30
This book is one of the most enjoyable and inspiring books that I have read, especially if you are interested in Natural Language Processing and Literary Analysis. Many of the authors' original ideas and research contributions are still worthy and valid for today's research topic and directions, such as in data/knowledge mining, intellegent abstract & indexing, etc..

Excellent coverage of search techniques and more
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 1999-07-30
Covers the most important search techniques (usually associated with AI). The approach is very clear and understandable. The biggest value of the book is in clearly explained (pseudo) source code listings that can be easily translated to any procedural programming language. The book also contains a couple of "bonus" chapters that discuss relevance of Neural Networks and Genetic Programming to the search topics.
