Artificial Intelligence
The Future of Intelligence: Biological and Articial

Essential reading for the would-be intelligence expert.
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 1999-03-04
A 5 Star rating but more for those who want to really understand the nature of intelligence. This is not a bedside book, it is an absorbing trip into the deepest reaches of understanding. Written by a genius, you do have to be a genius to enjoy it. Anyone who plans to get deeply into information management, knowledge management and information management at a level that will blow away the commercial 'experts' should read this book. Better still, but not essential, read 'Brain' (by the same author) first, if you can still find a copy. This is fascination between two covers. Better than an encyclopaedia, heaped with original intellectual thought and combined with the condensed wisdoms from other masters, this is a must read for any budding information expert, especially the aspirant CIO. The parallels between intelligence the way the brain works and intelligence the way any other organisation works means that the lessons are practical and useful. I found it immensely useful in ordering my vision of all variations of information management.

From a Computer Scientist to Cognitive Scientists
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 1999-12-03
This is a very well organized collection of papers. It is written in a language that is accessible to a broad audience. The introductions to book sections are excellent (or, "masterful," as R. Taraban puts it in CONTEMPORARY PSYCHOLOGY, 1998, Vol. 43, No. 10, p. 681). The best thing about this book is its coverage of current issues and perspectives in Cognitive Science. I recommend this book as an introductory reading assignment for a graduate course in Artificial Intelligence.

This is a very very interesting book on fuzzy Petri nets.

Review Date: 2000-05-09
Authored by a number of eminent researchers in this field, this book provides all possible research aspects on fuzzy Petri nets. It includes models along with their analysis and applications. The coverage on temporal reasoning using fuzzy Petri nets is most useful. Applications in knowledge verification and uncertainty management in general are also worthwhile for reading. Summarisingly, this book must be on the desk of anyone interested in the disciplines of "fuzziness in Petri nets".

Exellent presentation for designers of fuzzy/neural systems
Helpful Votes: 6 out of 6 total.
Review Date: 1999-07-23
Buckley and Feuring have written a concise and understandable presentation of the essential mathematics involved in artificial neural nets (fuzzy and conventional), in fuzzy expert systems, and in hybrid systems employing both techniques. The book is most valuable for those seriously interested in such systems whose mathematics is primarily of the engineering variety. A real virtue is that the options available in the design phase are spelled out; it is not assumed that the system designer will follow the conventional well-trodden path. The example given of a fuzzy teaching machine illustrates choosing among these options. The treatment of neural nets is especially good; I would wish that the treatment of fuzzy expert systems had been expanded beyond bare necessity. Useful adjunct reading is Earl Cox's Fuzzy Systems Handbook and von Altrock's Fuzzy Logic and NeuroFuzzy Applications.

While much of the basic mathematics is available in other books such as Klir and Yuan, it is quite difficult to locate what one needs to know in these books. Buckley and Feuring's presentation has the great virtue that the math is organized in a fashion appropriate to the system designer's needs. I know of no other book which fills this niche.

Major editorial event for neuro-fuzzy medical comunity
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2000-04-23
The monograph, containing interdisciplinary studies on the use of neuro-fuzzy paradigm in medicine and biomedical applications, is structured in three parts and is composed of contributed papers by independent teams of researchers. It creates a bridge between two scientific communities, information technology researchers, on one side and specialists in medicine and biomedical engineering, on the other side, filling a gap that originates in the lack of communication between the two parties. The book brings to the reader contributions by researchers who have been active in the field in the past few years. The list of authors comprises 35 researchers affiliated to outstanding research and academic institutions that cover a very wide geographic area. The monograph addresses a large range of readers, including fuzzy - engineering community, researchers in medicine and biomedical engineering, teachers, doctoral students. Each chapter is provided with an extended list of references, and most of contributed papers contain comprehensive explanation of terminology. At the end of the book, a very rich index of terms is given. A very good idea is having a section that introduces the contributors to the reader, so the papers can be placed in the larger context of their scientific work. We state that the monograph is a major contribution to the dissemination of knowledge in the scientific community; no doubt that we face an editorial event. The book may be regarded as a good acquisition for the reader involved in the approached scientific domains.

I liked the book very much specially for the chapters on neurofuzzy computations (chapter 3 and 4).The last chapter on fuzzy Petri nets is also interesting.

The largest and most comprehensive conference in the field
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2001-05-11
Many papers in many different topics related to evolutionary computation. The conference is organized around independent "demes" with the goal of ensuring diversity and respect for emerging ideas. The standards for reviewing are relatively high. However, there are some papers that obviously fell though the cracks, which is probably inevitable in a conference of this size.

An interesting and useful conference!
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2001-08-24
I attended this conference in San Francisco and I learned many things in many different areas of evolutionary computation. If you want to learn about the latest in this field, get this collection of good papers. All the papers were reviewed and the conference has a moderate acceptance rate, so there are very few disappointing papers.... I think it is worth it.

Excellent intro to the Systems Theory
Helpful Votes: 13 out of 19 total.
Review Date: 2004-11-14
I read this book while working on my dissertation. I did a thorough search on all books related to the systems theory in the VCU library and this was the best one. I loved reading it!!!! The language is crystal clear and precise. The organization is thoughtful and fluid. I just LOVED LOVED this book. Wish more people read it!! I couldn't believe how few good books there were re: this subject.
