A beau bookReview Date: 2007-10-26

An essential component of all mathematical librariesReview Date: 2003-10-20
The coverage of each constant or group of constants follows the pattern of an explanation of how the constant arose, the formulas that are used to define it and an extensive set of references. So extensive that at times the paper devoted to the reference list rivals the amount spent in the explanation of the constant.
There are eight chapters, which group the constants into the following categories:
1) Well-known constants, which covers constants such as Ð, e and the golden mean.
2) Constants associated with number theory.
3) Constants associated with analytic inequalities.
4) Constants associated with the approximation of functions.
5) Constants associated with enumerating discrete structures.
6) Constants associated with functional iteration.
7) Constants associated with complex analysis.
8) Constants associated with geometry.
Separate subject and author indexes are in the back, a most sensible approach as many of the constants are named after the person who first described them.
I consider this book to be an essential component of all mathematical libraries. I have placed it on my "within the grasp" shelf and have strongly recommended to the college library that it be added to the reference collection.

An Instant ClassicReview Date: 2003-09-29
From the Preface: "Material about well-known constants appears early and carefully, for the sake of readers without much mathematical background." The well-known constants include Pythagoras' square root of 2, the Golden Mean, Euler's e and gamma, Archimedes' pi, Apery's zeta(3), Catalan's G, Khintchine's K, Feigenbaum's delta, Madelung's M, and Chaitin's Omega.
There are chapters on constants associated with the fields of number theory, real and complex analysis, approximation of functions, enumeration of discrete structures (some from physics), functional iteration (e.g., paper folding), and geometry. A Table of Constants in decimal form directs the reader to sections of the book. Many sections have extensive lists of references, and Finch indicates exactly where in the literature one should look for rigorous proofs and further elaboration. Author and Subject Indexes complement each other. More than sixty figures illuminate the text.
This book shows the mysterious ubiquity and "unreasonable effectiveness" of certain universal constants. Anyone interested in mathematics will benefit from reading it.

Outstanding resourceReview Date: 2008-02-01
However, the underlying visual concepts eluded me. How do the signal analyzer outputs and Matlab plots really map to the complicated mathematics forming their foundation? Far too much was "left up to the reader," so forget the proofs and move on.
Then I encountered the Stanford University CCRMA resource created by Dr. Smith. I began to study the bite-sized chunks of core-course education on the DFT...a few chapters later, I was ready to add the hardcopies to my library.
As "Fretboard Logics" unlock the mysteries of guitar playing, so does this resource unlock the mathematics in terms that can be easily understood. Dr. Smith's instruction is revolutionary, a reformation in dissimenating knowledge all too carefully guarded by an academic elite. Is it a shame that a music department has to educate engineers in basic mathematical principles? No complaining...just buy the books!
An Excellent book for anyone interested in understanding DFTReview Date: 2007-05-05
The book is very much self contained and not much is required as prerequisites. We are taken step by step from the basics to DFT.
Though I have read almost the entire book online I am eagerly waiting for my hardcopy order to arrive.
Very accessible book on the DFTReview Date: 2008-01-30
I've already read the two books in print - and skimmed through the dozens more Mr. Smith has on his website. The online access gives you a good idea of whether or not you want to purchase these books, but to get access to the problem sets you need the print version of the book. For the low price compared to other similar books, believe me it's worth it. The author works through both the proofs and motivations for the DFT, then goes on to show the reader some applications.
The Discrete Fourier Transform (DFT) is a numerical approximation to the Fourier transform. The DFT has its own exact Fourier theory, which is the main focus of this book. The DFT is normally encountered in practice as a Fast Fourier Transform (FFT), which is a high-speed algorithm for computing the DFT. FFTs are used extensively in a wide range of digital signal processing applications, including spectrum analysis, high-speed convolution (linear filtering), filter banks, signal detection and estimation, system identification, audio compression (such as MPEG-II AAC), spectral modeling sound synthesis, and many other applications. The only prerequisites for understanding this book is a good high school math background including some exposure to calculus. The following is an outline of the book's contents:
1. Intro to the DFT
2. Introduction to Complex Numbers - deals with factoring polynomials, the quadratic formula, the complex plane, and Euler's formula.
3. Proof of Euler's Identity - important when working with complex numbers.
4. Sinusoids and exponentials
5. Geometric Signal Theory - discusses the DFT a a change of coordinates from one basis set to another.
6. The DFT Derived
7. Fourier Theorems for the DFT
8. Example Applications of the DFT - shows practical FFT analysis in Matlab and Octave via examples.
There is also an appendix with some supplemental mathematical background material and some Matlab and Octave examples.

In evaluating books on Office, I always look first to see if they discuss Pivot Tables in the section on Excel. A surprising number of books don't, or give them very short treatment. In this book the index sends you to page 263, that puts you right in the middle of a discussion on pivot tables. Flipping back a page or three gets you to a section called Find Relationships Between Data. What an excellent idea, that's what a pivot table really is, but doesn't have the problem of the dumb name Pivot Table. The discussion is as good as I've seen anywhere in explaining what you can use them for.
The next thing I found was inside the front cover where they have a "Contents at a Glance." This sends you to, not the page number - that's the function of the index, but to a section identified by its own numbering system. Really a handy way to get where you want to jump in to solve the problem you're having at the moment.

"MSGroove" SpringboardReview Date: 2008-06-17
What is it?
A Tool Box for Project Managers or Information Managers
How does it do it??
Groove is set up with 10 to 15 tools that will assist in the process of infomation transfer. Each tool is explained to the "T", about not only how, but when & where the tool should be used.
Features glore.
The tools in MSGroove provide methods to track your meeting schedules, Meeteing Decisions, Meeting Notes and share the Project folders (Files), pictures, track issues, Alerts, project calendars, Integration of InfoPath forms, instant messages and the list goes on and on.
One important aspect is that the engineers realized you may need to use a specific tool over and over. Example is the calendar tool. You can create numerous calendars, for example, one calendar for each of your sub-contarctors, entering all the dates of expected work or information, then you can combine all the calendars into one complete calendar or combine any number of calendars together, somewhat like an overlay system adding one at a time to see if problems exist. Very Cool.
One small problem is that the sketch pad for doing your drawings needs to have an eraser for sketch errors
Groove can be a very powerful tool for any project PM or information manager. Combining this Program with "MS PROJECT" on the larger project side, provides complete project shareware anywhere.
Finally a ((secured workspace)) to share important information with your partners & Employees in business. Not only can you share information, you can also allocate responsibilities and see the follow up, through the use of the Alert system. This program works on a server or on any stand alone PC to PC. If your looking for better ways to control project information, this is your baby and Rick, John & Berry will take you through the information Step by Step.
My hat is off to the engineers of MS Groove.

Well, now you can quickly and easily make your self an expert or just a very competant user; thanks to this book. I have used Groove for a while and found some of the concepts a bit difficult to grasp. Groove is different and having an expert guide like this has helped me to open up a whole new world of possibilities and opportunites to use the tool to it's full extent.
If you have Groove (or are thinking aboout it) this is a MUST have!
