English and writing are not my favorite subjects. I am taking college classes and this book has helped me immensely. It is written very clearly and detailed with easy to understand examples and essays. It has helped me to become a better writer. You will learn how to handle writing assignments and be given examples of different methods to consider. There are specific pointers, suggestions and tips to help you when you get stuck in your writing. It has written informal discussions about writing that answer questions of other students. It is not a standard English textbook. It is written in a way that holds your interest and between the serious to the humorous, you will retain more of what you read.

I teach freshman composition at a community college and found this book invaluable. I actually shun the required book and have adopted this for my class. I use it for suggestions, as a reference - and my students love it. It's a very easy read and extremely helpful. I also really love the way it is divided into the different rhetorical styles of writing. It also has great examples and tips. I highly recommend this book!!!

I recently purchased a copy of "Extensible 3D Graphics for Web Authors" and found the book to be a wonderful guide to this new field. The text is comprehensible and the material is laid out in a way that makes the book a delight to read. The authors are to be congratulated for producing this welcome contribution to web authoring.

This is the book for X3D

Finally, a useful book on X3D. Up until now I had to rely upon the technical ISO spec documentation which is, by its nature, a bit obtuse. This book, in contrast, explains in plain language how to put X3D to use in a tangible way. It breaks the format down into the base components, and explains each in an understandable way with straight forward examples. All the technical information is here, but laid out in an approachable manner, and with plenty of context. Most of the visual examples in the book are a bit simplistic, which is just fine for explaining core concepts. However, they are not indicative of what is truly possible with this 3D format. With the knowledge presented in this book, what can be done is limited only by one's time and creativity. I keep this one within arm's reach.

X3D De-mystified

Before reading this book, I was playing about with Flux Studio - going through examples and trying stuff out while trying to make sense of some of the terms used in the IDE. The Wiki helped somewhat but still left a lot of stuff un-explained. Since reading the book, which is written in a very accessible, matter-of-fact style, I am now aware what the capabilities of X3D are and how best to use it for my purposes. There are also many more examples available which illustrate usages and techniques. My particular purposes for exploring X3D are firstly to provide interactive demonstrations to better illustrate particular product concepts, and also to present software architectures in a more meaningful way that people can navigate through to discover the information they need. I am a Software Engineer rather than a graphic artist but I'm coming to grips with the whole 3D modelling thing as well as learning the X3D stuff. Anyway, overall I have found this book very good and it will continue to be a reference source for me.

3D Graphics for the People

For as long as there has been a World Wide Web, 3D has been the 'next big thing', but because of many factors, it never really took off. But behind the browser wars, the dot com boom and bust, and all the hype around competing 3D graphics formats, Extensible 3D Graphics (X3D) matured as the stable standard for 3D on the web. And it finally becomes accessible to everyone with this book. Following the simple and instructive examples, even a novice can create 3D models and virtual worlds for the web. The book and accompanying website provide both introductory and intermediate material, and it's useful across a wide range of skill levels.

From an educator's perspective, this book is long overdue. Often texts in 3D graphics focus on learning applications such as Maya or 3DS Max. While these tools are powerful and widely used, they do not teach the basics of 3D Graphics. This book takes a tool-agnostic approach, and focuses on the fundamentals of the scene graph, rendering, lighting, spatialized sound, and interactivity.

This book is the culmination of many years of work in 3D graphics and reflects the expertise of the authors' many years in the 3D graphics industry as both educators and practitioners. It's an excellent resource for the classroom and beyond.

Softimage released a patch for the crash bug

Review Date: 2002-09-12
The scene files that accompany this book only crashed the free XSI "Experience" demo version, due to a backwards-compatibility issue in the software (not a bug in the scene files from Mesmer). Softimage was kind enough to release a patch to the XSI Experience CD that fixes the problem, just for this book series. The patch is available from the same place you get the scene files (due to the review guidelines I can't include the URL, but it's in the book).

Excellent overall XSI training

Review Date: 2004-09-05
This book was an absolute surprise. As a new XSI 4.0 user, I had been disappointed with other books. The author focuses on character animation, but in discussing this objective, he takes the reader through an overview of XSI, its features, distinctive elements, and tools "how to." For example, he discusses sub-division, NURBS, and polygon modeling, explaining the differences, benefits, and disadvantages.

I would strongly recommend a visit to the Mesmer.com website (publisher), for additional details on this and other training materials.

Where's the beef?

Review Date: 2002-08-09
This BOOK is amazing! From the basics of animation to the more advanced practices, this book is for any animator that wants to animate in XSI. Every animation feature is covered with this book. Unfortunately, since this book does not come with a CD that contains the scene files necessary, you must download them from Mesmer's web site. That's not the bad part. First, the contents were not uploaded. Then, when they were uploaded, they were a temporary version to make downloaders happy. Unfortuantely, when you finish downloading the 43.9MB file, you find that this "temporary" version of the scene files CRASH XSI. I'm sure that the scenes will be nice and relate well with this book WHEN THEY ARE UPLOADED IN THEIR COMPLETE FORM. Until then, this book is a great fundamental resource, but a poor learning tool. 4 stars = Good Book + Bad Content. 5 stars = Good Book + Good Content.

Hafemann's commentary is probably the best in the whole NIVAC series. His exegesis, while not detailed, is solid and insightful. This commentary has some really excellent theology, and some fine application as well. Given the stated aim of this series, Hafemman's commentary is first rate. Of course, it is not as detailed as Furnish, Barnett or Garland, but it does capture the flow and thrust of the letter better than most. I was impressed by its numerous insights. As for those who are worried about his theology of justification, I really can't see the problem with insisting that we are justified by faith alone, but that faith always includes works (including repentence!) within itself. No magisterial Reformer ever denied the necessity of works as a part of faith, they denied that works apart from faith can save. I highly recommend this commentary as filling a real need for the pastor preaching through 2 Corinthians.

An excellent commentary.

Dr. Hafemann's Second Corinthians is an unmatched source for understanding Paul's letter. The biggest strength of Hafemann's ministry is that it is led first and foremost by his desire to build up the followers of Christ, a goal he achieves through the teaching and preaching of the Word of God. Dr. Hafemann makes no apology towards his assurance that the promises of God are real and eternally relevant for everyone.

Hafemann brings a wealth of resources to the text of second Corinthians. He has a solid theological understanding of the WHOLE bible, with special emphasis on those sections which form the backdrop to Paul's letter. He has a fluent understanding of the original languages of both the Old and New Testament, elaborating on many of the areas where the English translation is not clear. Finally, Hafemann shows a true mastery of the text of Second Corinthians, a letter he has examined critically in two of his earlier books as well as his dissertation.

Some of the highlights I found were the unpacking of:

**Paul explanation that his suffering validates his true ministry in the Spirit, and that it is through this suffering that God is mediating the gospel to the Corinthians. **Paul's comparison of his call with the call of Moses, and his subsequent comparison of their respective ministries. **Paul's understanding that a life of faith and a life of persevering in obedience are one and the same thing.

Zondervan's hardcover binding and acid free paper insures this book will last the test of time. Its stiff pages, however, make it difficult to lay open. This is an especially annoying problem if your trying to take down some McDonald's fries while you read it :)

This commentary has been an invaluable resource in my own life. I confidently recommend it to anyone who wishes a solid understanding of Paul's view of his ministry and that of the gospel as a whole.

This commentary series is touted as a light series, but I have found that Hafemann's book gets you down deep into the world of Paul.

I have used his book when preaching on chapters 8 and 9 and have found his comments to be stimulating and provocative. I have also appreciated what Craig Blomberg says on these chapters in his "Neither Poverty nor Riches," also available from Amazon.

And he is also insightful on one of my favourite bible passages, chapter 4. I can't get enough of the concept that when God's Spirit illuminates us, it is like the original blaze of light when God said LET THERE BE LIGHT in Genesis chapter 1.
And the thought that we have been given the right to see God's glory shining in Christ's face.

Highly recommended.

There are three editions of the text by Thomas Innes of Learney:1st Ed 1934; 2nd Ed 1956 after he was knighted; 3rd Ed 1978 for which the revisor was the author's son (Sir) Malcolm Innes of Edingight. Each edition has its own special values. Both father and son were the Lord Lyon King of Arms. The illustrations of the first ed may be more extensive than later ones. The 2nd ed is the most detailed. The 3rd has the arms of the Duke of Rothesay (HRH Prince Charles).

Although I had gotten my feet wet using Ableton Live 4, I didn't realize what I was missing until I read this book. I am now much faster and can do a lot of really cool stuff that I didn't even realize was possible with Live before reading this book. It's also much easier to read than other technical manuals I've read, written in an engaging, conversational style that is easy to understand while imparting some pretty deep knowledge. Actually inspired me to dig into Live and try what I was learning. I highly recommend this one!!

This is a really a great book to 1) help you learn Live 4 better, 2) get better in-depth coverage of some old and new areas in Live, 3) see new ways of working with Live, and 4) have a great guide to supplement the Ableton provided manual.

I've been getting a lot out of Live since Live 3, and this book has been a great tool in quickly learning some of the new features of Live 4, as well as picking up a lot of great tips.

It's written well, and put together for the person who wants to get a lot of tutorial-style info, methods to use Live quicker and smarter, and get even more musical goodness out of Live.

Very happy I bought this book, an easy 5 star recommendation.

Enjoy!

Having used this program for quite some time, I thought I pretty much knew everything it could do. Boy, was I wrong. Chad Carrier brilliantly guides you through all the incredible features of this software, and he does it in a way that doesn't leave you scratching your head. I was surprised to discover just how much this program can do. If you are a musician or a producer, Ableton Live is one of the greatest new music making tools to come along in years. This book does an incredible job of explaining all the many features in Live 4, and I highly recommend both the software and this book for anyone who has ever wanted to get into making music on their computer. I'm inspired. OK, back to the studio!

I have been developing applicaitons for a number of year now with Access 97 and have many books I have used. This book has become my most recommended. Client/Server Programming for Access 97 is a must have for anyone who develops serious applications in Access 97. It contains clear, practical guidelines to create and polish client/server applications using Access 97. I recommend this book to both novices and experts since it impossible to believe that there will not be something of value for anyone who reads it. It can be read cover to cover or used as a reference. As a footnote, I must also add that the paper quality is unusually good and the layouts completely avoid descriptions on one page and diagrams on the other.

I just finished the book and I loved it! It does a very nice job of covering the entire topic in enough depth to provide real answers, while leaving plenty of room for exploration. I'll be downloading some of the examples soon. I particularly liked the "Paired-Pages" arrangement where the right page summarizes and supplements the material presented on the left. It delivers the concepts in convenient bite-size pieces with immediate, built-in reinforcement. It will get my highest recommendation. It now takes it's place on my shelf alongside the other Access "Bible", the Sybex Access97 Developer's Handbook.

This book is packed with everything you need to use Sony's Acid Pro to it's fullest. The information is clearly presented with lot's of screen shots, tips and suggestions. The chapters take you from just getting around in the program to detailed discussion of all the FX available and when and where to use them, to mastering loop manipulation, using MIDI, and publishing your work. I found useful information in every chapter. The book is well organized. Each topic in a chapter has its own sub-heading with usually about a half-page of text, making it easy to put down, play with what you've learned, and then continue. This book also explains several ways to jump from feature to feature, including menu navigation and short-cut keys. This is a great book for learning the software and to have on hand as a reference book.

Sub-Title: The Official Guide to Sony ACID Pro 5 Software : The Official Guide to Sony's ACID Pro 5 (Power!)

ACID Pro, at about $400 retail (about $250 discounted) isn't the cheapest or the most expensive music processing software. It is probably the most popular loop based creation and remixing software sold.

This book is intended to be both a tutorial and a reference book and it does that by spending the first couple of chapters leading you through a tutorial before moving to a more reference like format. It is intended to be a supplement to the manual that comes with the product, at once providing more basic understanding of the underlying philosophy of loop generated music.

Mr. Frank, the author is a multimedia artist specializing in digital video production and scoring. He has used ACID to create music for a wide variety of customers.

This is an intermediate to advanced level book, as the author says, play around with the software first, and then we'll settle down to doing some work.

A Deep and Classic Approach to Acoustics
Helpful Votes: 18 out of 18 total.
Review Date: 2000-12-02
Texts on acoustics approach the subject from many different angles and at many different levels. Pierce's text is classic, rigorous and complete. It should serve the needs of serious students of acoustics for a variety of purposes - musical acoustics and sound are my particular perspective.

Some writers cater their approach to electrical engineers or to mechanical engineers, assuming that by tieing everything to those disciplines they will make the effort easier for their readers. This may serve well those who come from those disciplines, but may not serve others well and may not serve all applications of acoustics equally well either. Pierce does not do so. His approach is rigorously mathematical and pure, going to the heart of the matter, rather than one of attempting to cut corners by making analogies to other fields that you may or may not know.

The book is not for the faint of heart or the mildly curious, it is deep and demanding. But he organizes it superbly and writes intelligently with a wonderful way of integrating the history and development of the science, and the graphics are exceptionally clear and communicative.

Highly recommended for the very serious about this subject. My favorite among the books I have consulted.

This book was used as a text book for one of our courses during my masters. In my opinion it is one of the classic books available in acoustics. If you want to learn fundamentals and to know "why" for any acoustical phenomena, then this book is for you. If you are looking for an applied (engineering) kind of book, then this book is not for you. The author gives a clear and concise approach to the acoustics problem formulations. The end of chapter excercises are very helpful(some problems require references to current journal literature for detailed formulation).

Clearly this is the book to learn physical pricnciples from. I wish the author would have added a couple of chapters on aeroacoustics and related phenomena.
