i have over 10 books in DSP all are the most famous ones, but this book is really really special, in the way it explains the subject.
i do not normally write reviews but i feel obligated to praise this book and its authors, very well done.
it is just the talent of teaching which makes all the difference between books.
this book delivers very well, crystal clear and insightful.
thanks for the authors.
digital signal processing by Steven Smith is also a great book.
both books are for beginers who seeks true understanding.

A great book to learn DSP from

This book is an excellent book to learn the basics of DSP. The book covers all the necessary content (sampling, aliening, FIR/IIR filters, Analog filters, continuous and discrete signals in systems, and more) required to understand the basics of DSP. The authors have included material on often not covered topics such as undersamping and practical uses that make this well rounded reading. The content is not "stuffy" (e.g. "clearly", "therefore", etc.) that is on light-hearted side of humorous. A good coverage of practical DSP implementation on microcontrollers is included (notably the Motorola 68HC16 16-bit microcontroller). All first time students of DSP and aspiring DSP professionals should have this book along with Rick Lyons, "Understanding Digital Signal Processing" in their library!

Outstanding, a favorite book

It's readable, enjoyable, humorous, solid. Along with "DSP First" and Ken Steiglitz' book, this is as good as it gets. And the "DSP Guru" cartoons - what a crackup, excellent. Never mind the "microcontroller" part of the title - this is a book for anyone, on any platform, needing a good, fun intro to DSP.

Outstanding in its clarity...extremely readable!

I've owned this book for 5 years now. With that perspective, I think it's greatest strength is its "readability"- not something you normally associate with DSP books! Deller and Grove do a terrific job of explaining BASIC dsp concepts from the ground-up while avoiding high-level math (for the most part).

I rank it above Steven Smith's DSP book since it has more clarity and detail. Richard Lyon's "Understanding DSP" has more mathematical details, but it's not as user-friendly as this book-so I'd recommend this book first for newbies to DSP and then, Lyon's book.

Oh yeah, the cartoons are great too!

I have read and studied from Kay Arthur's study books for many years. I have just purchased several to learn how to live in these troublesome times according to God's Word. I have The International Inductive Study Bible, very helpful.A friend has the Discover the Bible for Yourself.I did not have that one,so I looked on Amazon, Of course I was happy to purchase it from Amazon. I find it very helpful.I would suggest if you are making a purchase, Behold Jesus Is Coming,is a study guide for the book of Revelations. I enjoy Amazon and the prices and shipping are very reasonable, also you recieve them very quickly, and in very good condition. Are just scroll through Amazon, type in Kay Arthur's name an many, many wonderful books will be shown.May it be a delight for you.

With this book, anyone can tap into the Bible expertise of Kay Arthur and study through the entire Bible from Genesis to Revelation. Originally the material in this book was only available in the Inductive Study Bible but now you can access it with this book--and use whatever Bible to study through the Scriptures.

If you want to know more about the Bible, use this book. It's an excellent resource and guide for a self-guided study of the entire Bible. Also it's another well-written reference book which is packed with insight and information.

Finally a DOM book!
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2002-10-15
The DOM these days is available in a multitude of programming languages and environments. Not so many people have the knowledge to properly handle the topic, moving back and forward across different languages and implementations, Joe Marini is definitely one of the few. As a matter of fact this is the first book ever available on the subject, and long awaited one! Joe covers much more than just DOM programming for browsers and the books contains a few gems like coverage of Xerces, Dreamweaver's API, generic DOM algorithms and a dedicated chapter on the future of DOM. A must have for anyone doing sophisticated client-side programming for web browsers, this book will be also very useful to anyone dealing with the DOM in any other environment

Scholarly work on an advanced topic

Review Date: 2002-09-16
I have a great deal of interest in the document object model, as it is the basis of HTML and XML documents. Anyone interested in working with HTML, XML, DHTML in an advanced way should read this book and learn from it. This isn't a book for people with a passing interest in slapping together Web pages in Front Page, but it will give you a solid knowledge of the advanced topics of DOM manipulation using JavaScript.

The book starts with some solid theory and explanation of the DOM API, but quickly moves to some practical examples, such as some useful debugging tools, and some HTML interface components (popup menus, in-place list editing) which will get you off on the right foot thinking about how you can implement your own interface elements. That's really the strongest aspect of the book -- getting you to think in new ways.

An excellent resource

I read through this book in detail, and I must say that I learned a lot about the DOM that I had previously glossed over. The DOM spec is much more powerful and interesting than what most folks assume. This book gives you insights on building real-world applications using the DOM, as well as helping to deal with cross-browser issues. As I said, it's a great resource for both web developers and web-based application developers.

Great DOM coverage with excellent examples!

This book rightfully deserves 5 stars. Is it revolutionary in the sense of "unleashing" DOM? No. If you love reading HTML documentation you can get pretty much the same scope at the W3C site (which the author himself acknowledges). It is more of a wake-up call for web developers.

The ideas presented in the book are very elegant which makes them very valuable. The author explains subtle and obvious differences in the DOM support as implemented by different browser vendors. It has been of great help in my work since I read this book.

Part III alone ("Practical Uses of the DOM") is worth the time and money for its real-life applications of DOM!

Dotcons: Con Games, Fraud, And Deceit On The Internet is a comprehensive, easy-to-read, informative and reliable instructional guide to protecting our selves, our families, and our business dealings from Internet frauds and scams. The rapid growth and development of e-commerce on the Internet is notorious for outstripping the abilities of local, state, and federal law enforcement efforts to deal with it. From stock manipulation by e-traders, to illegitimate entrepreneurs masquerading as established business, to auction site defraudings ranging from selling counterfeits and stolen properties to simply taking the money from a bidder and failing to provide the item offered, Internet based criminal activities are rampant, diverse, and widespread. If you seek to do any kind of personal or professional business on the Internet, you need to give James Thomes' Dotcons a serious and thorough reading!

In it's totality, I found this compiled source of information "hard to put down" as I finished the book in one hour. Are there additional volumes or books by James?

Ounce of Prevention

Review Date: 2001-01-24
I agree with other reviewers that Dotcons should be required reading for everyone using the Internet. A play on words describing how the new 'dot-com' technology has been co-opted by modern day con-artists, the book is a well-organized survey of the confidence games, fraud and deceit that exist on the Internet. It explains what the threats are, how Dotcon artists deceive you, how to recognize them, and what you can do to protect yourself.

For an engineer, Jim Thomes, writes with the imagination and flare of a novelist. It is clear that he views the dot-com explosion of the last few years with some degree of caution when he argues that the rapid evolution of e-commerce on the Internet has outpaced our laws to regulate it!

He claims the fast pace and anonymity of business transactions on the Internet have produced new opportunities for fraud as well as modern versions of old-fashioned confidence games that are appearing every day. Quoting Federal Trade Commission reports of over 500 complaints a day, Dotcons describes how both individuals and businesses are being routinely swindled out of millions of dollars by illegitimate businesses setting up off offshore out of the jurisdiction of the laws of civilized countries, brash young hackers manipulating your portfolio for fun and profit, technology-savvy entrepreneurs with questionable business plans raising billions in capital, and one-man shops masquerading as established businesses, taking your credit card, and then disappearing into cyberspace with little or no chance of apprehension.

Dotcons not only warns about these frauds, but also explains how to recognize and deal with them -- Advance Fees, Business Ventures, Investments, On-line Auctions, E-Shopping, Travel Packages, Rebates, University Degrees, Counterfeit Identification, Fenced Goods, Sweepstakes, Contests, Gambling, Prescription Drugs and dozens more 'opportunities' that you will find on the Internet.

Dotcons also addresses the privacy issues associated with using your credit card and personal identification on the Internet. Thomes coins the term 'Mass Privacide' when he asserts that violation of our privacy has become the norm while doing business on the Internet. He shows in detail how data mining scan websites, chatrooms, bulletin boards and e-mail for private financial data that is used to 'profile' you for manipulation by the media.

The format of Dotcons is friendly: it has short, easy to understand examples of scams and simple directions to deal with them. But the message of Dotcons is strong -- a very serious attempt to solve a problem faced by millions of people all over the world who are being confronted every day with new and different electronic schemes to cheat them. Dotcons is an ounce of prevention that's probably worth a pound of cure for your pocketbook and privacy. I liked it, and it sure changed my habits on the Internet.

I have three Office 2000 books. If I had to recommend a good one for learning the basics to beginners-this is the one. It covers the fundementals of Word, Excel, Power Point (slide presentations) Outlook (E-mail, appointments, calenders), the basics of Publisher (publications-newsletters, brochures), and Front Page (Web pages). Even if you are not real familiar with the Office software-this is a good place to start. The book is illustrated with clear, color pictures which are accompied by step-by step instructions. I find that it was a lot easier to read as compared to the technically-oriented books. (I am not a technical person). Along the margins of the book-there are tips, warnings and shortcuts which are very helpful. For all the non-techies like me-this is a good start.

We've been using this book in my paramedic class along with a few other pathophysiology textbooks/references. I'm halfway through this book and convinced it's worth its weight in gold. If your concerned about not knowing what are the "important parts" to study in your monstrous pathophysiology texts, this book solves your problems. It's got what you "need to know " divided into 30 sections that are each about 12 pages long. And in such a short time the author still manages to tie in the clinical relevance and the current standards in treatment. Very manageable chunks of info whether you're a student looking to tie it all together or just need a quick review of some pathophys. As a student you'll still need your other books, but in terms of quantity & quality material covered vs. hours spent studying, this book certainly gives you the most bang for your buck.

A truly outstanding work that provides extensive references and clinical pearls such as how to diagnose CHF with a simple bedside manuver, the true definition of sepsis, the latest on the recognition and treatment of stroke, and many many other invaluable tips. Discusses (briefly) pathophysiology and immediately correlates the physiology with the treatment of the most common conditions in emergency medicine. Very nice sections at the end of the text on hot topics such as rapid sequence intubation, acid-base interpretation, and ECG interpretation. An essential book for any medical student or paramedic student!

Great title for mechanical and other engineering fields
Helpful Votes: 28 out of 29 total.
Review Date: 2001-11-06
Many 'engineering' matlab books don't live up their titles. They are simply written as general introductions to matlab with a few useless thoughts about engineering thrown in.

In my opinion, a good matlab engineering book focuses less on general tips that you could get anywhere, and more on practical problem solving techniques and methodologies that provide insight into a paticular engineering problem and its solution.

This books succeeds in that respect. Though it gives space to the more general issues of using matlab, it gives ample room to specific engineering problems. I found its information and examples very useful. The topics are focused on mechanical engineering fields, such as vibration and control; however, the math used for such topics are used across engineering and science disciplines. Thus, any scientist or engineer will find this book useful.

The book is written so that engineers at many levels can benefit from it. For example, as a former graduate student, I found the treatments of vibration response analysis insightful. However, an undergraduate or otherwise inexperienced user would benefit from this book as well, because there is alot of general discussion of how to effectively and efficiently use matlab and write m-files.

All in all, I found this book excellent for both its treatment of high level engineering analysis issues and its more general matlab tips and discussion.

Excellent! ... Applied Engineering using computers, it doesn't get any better than this. Examples, programs, applications .. this is where this book beats the competition. Matlab is a powerful program, and this book shows why. It has been written for beginners and experienced users alike. Introduction to matrices, then goes into functions, and 2D/3D plotting ... then the fun begins with Engineering Applications in fields such as Machine Design, Vibrations, Control Systems, Dynamics, Fluid Mechanics, Heat Transfer and even Statistics and Optimization! Numerous programs and examples serve as practice for the reader. I am currently using the text to write programs for calculating the vibration of thin beams in my Grad Vibrations class. I only wish I could have gotten my hands on a book such as this when I took many of my undergrad courses. By the way, this book refers to MATLAB 5.3 (Release 11). Congratulations to the authors on such a thorough guide.

Forget about class factories and such...
The real issue in COM is type libraries and proxy/stubs and how these are created using IDL. Also of great importance is designing COM interfaces so that they may be utilized by VB and C++. This is a one stop reference for all that good information.

Even if you use COM at a higher level - ATL wizards, VB wizards and dont really write your own IDL file, you need to read this book to get an understanding of how you can do write even better COM clients and servers.

One thing i wish it also had is information about accessing these COM classes from VBScript.

Asset liability management can get rather complicated. The authors treat this subject in a very user friendly way that the layperson can understand, and the technician can get good guidance out of.

They cover all the basics really well. After studying this book, you will have a very good understanding of gap analysis, duration, shareholder value added, liquidity management, and other related subject.

Simply perfect

The book offers a perfectly simple approach to ALM in banking. I cannot imagine a more concise framework for this subject. The authors fully attain their objective of providing fun reading for a banking subject, something really out of this world.
